Uncharted 4 Is a "Technical Powerhouse," Analysis Says

"The best-looking console game we've ever tested."

With Uncharted 4: A Thief's End scheduled to come out tomorrow, May 10, Digital Foundry has now posted its technical analysis for the long-awaited PlayStation 4 action-adventure game. The site gushed about the game, saying it raises the bar for current-generation games.

"This is a must-play experience that delivers the rare mix of pitch perfect gameplay and high-end visuals," Digital Foundry said. "Uncharted 4 is the technical powerhouse we've been waiting for."

Now Playing: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Video Review

"The set-pieces are more impressive, the maps larger, the characters and environments more detailed and the gameplay mechanics are richer than ever before. This is the real deal."

Uncharted 4 runs on the latest version of Naughty Dog's proprietary engine, which, this time around, allows for an "almost obscene wealth of new rendering features," Digital Foundry said.

The game runs at 1080p/30fps for its campaign and 900p/60fps for multiplayer. Regarding the campaign visuals, Digital Foundry said, "Uncharted 4 delivers the best image quality we've seen in a console game to date."

No Caption Provided

"Thin edges are remarkably clean, shader aliasing is almost non-existent, and shimmering is all but eliminated," the site explained. "Large, complex fields of detailed foliage remain razor sharp even at a distance while finer details on Nate's weapons remain clearly visible."

On the subject of character rendering, Digital Foundry said Uncharted 4 looks better in this department than games like Halo 5: Guardians, Quantum Break, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. "Uncharted 4 pushes things even further," it said.

According to the report, skin and fat "bend and move realistically," while Drake's shirt will react to the wind as it should. "Even his chest hair is impacted by the wind," Digital Foundry said.

Digital Foundry's full report offers a deep, deep dive into Uncharted 4's technical performance, touching on things like its use of real-time cutscenes and how the AI is smarter this time around, among other things. The report wasn't completely positive, however, as it also mentioned long load times and a photo mode that is not as robust as it could have been. Additionally, Digital Foundry said shadow quality could be better.

But overall, Uncharted 4 blew Digital Foundry away.

"There is a clear dedication to excellence here and it has paid off and Uncharted 4 is the best-looking console game we've ever tested," it said.

Uncharted 4 launches on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Reviews for the game started to show up last week, and critics are handing out high praise. It is the last game in the series Naughty Dog plans to make and the final one that stars Nathan Drake. However, there could be an Uncharted 5.

GameSpot scored Uncharted 4 a 10/10.

"In its writing, in its design, in its understanding of what makes games unique, Uncharted 4 is something to aspire to," critic Mike Mahardy said. "It's a shining example. And we'll be talking about it for years to come."

For more on the game's critical reception, check out this review roundup.

In other news, co-director Bruce Straley has advised against rushing through Uncharted 4. "Take your time. Its not like the last three. Don't try to gobble it down in one sitting. Settle in. Enjoy the moment," he said.

I didn't want to comment here before I actually play the game. Yes, ND has raised the bar high with Uncharted 4, the graphics on outdoors in some locations are nice but not impressive, Madagascar does look impressive though. However, the graphics and facial animation indoors are mind blowing, never seen a game with such details before.

To the people complaining here that it's called a Technical Powerhouse while having 30fps, they are obviously saying it in relation to the platform it's on. Of course it wouldn't have 30fps if it were on a 2000$ rig, but it's on a 400$ rig from 2013. Basically Naughty Dog managed to squeeze peformance out of a console with mediocre specs, making a game that looks better than almost anything that's out there at the moment, even on PC. Let's give a clap to that and forget that we're whinny bitches at least for a little bit, ok?

@livedreamplay: That's just it though , art direction wise it's great but quality wise aside from cutscenes it is hit and miss. You will wowed one moment and then the next it's meh with some textures that wouldn't look out of place on a PS2. IGN mentioned the shadows, and i thought , meh it can't be that bad surely. However it really is. These shadows are worse than The Last of Us running at 60 . That game ends up looking much better as it runs at double the speed. All they needed to do obviously was lower the amount of assets on screen just slightly and they should have been able to lock this to 60 fps instead of 30. It would have made a world of difference. It's kind of boring and slow at 30. I was hoping i could just shrug it off but it's tough when other games they release are 60.

@deviltaz35: Don't agree at all, it looks great throughout. I've experienced what you're saying in Ratchet and Clank, where it looks great in general but it has parts where textures are failing and pixels are showing, not the case here, wherever you look it's as smooth as can be. I've taken probably 1000 screenshots by now during gameplay, it's just incredible that a console game got this. As for 60fps, yes, the difference is there, but you have to work with what you have. I can't complain about 30, I've been playing with 30 most of the games this gen and last, but I would've liked 60 for both sp and mp. Eh, you have to work with what you have I guess.

@livedreamplay: for me the 30 fps is noticeable but not distracting because it's rather stready. It's not like say Witcher 3 at launch (for consoles) where there would be frame rate issues and dips in different areas and situations. So far I haven't noticed any dips or hitches in the frame rate for Uncharted 4 so I can't complain.

Also my guess is that at E3, when the 'Neo' is announced, they will reveal that Uncharted 4 will be pushed to 60 fps for the console. They can't sell the system without games supporting it and what better game to showcase the additional power than the game that is considered "the best looking console games ever."

I have a feeling I'm going to struggle resisting the urge to purchase the 'Neo' this fall.

@scottyp360: For a single player third person 30fps is ok yes, as long as it's staying at 30 like you said. Oh I already know I'm getting it this holiday season in case they launch it around that time, I look forward to every visual improvement.

@scottyp360: Yeah i think so too , if Naughty Dog can nail 60 on all of their games on Neo i am there :). To be honest if they intend on keeping 30 fps and just making the graphics look better i am going to not bother. I want faster framerates not better graphics.

I'm not surprised, this series was really good on ps3 and i knew they were going to make uncharted 4 something special. Still going to hold off buying the ps4 and wait for a price drop or just wait for that 4.5 - if the rumors are true.

You know what absurd? Uncharted has Microtransactions, Add-ons, and Paid DLC.... I just found out today in the PS Store and I check up on gaming news almost daily. I recall Halo 5 getting torn apart by offering free DLC with a fun REQ pack system with optional buy in... Hmmm... That and Uncharted 4 never even got scored as a complete package on this site. Odd. You would think MCC would have been worth at least an 8 or 9 alone for the campaigns, one of which being completely overhauled with easily the best soundtrack of that year... Hell it never even got re-reviewed.

@obsidian_born: I don't find is absurd in the least. Microtransactions, add-ons, and paid DLC is all but standard these days. It's more shocking when a game doesn't include these features.

@obsidian_born: Halo didn't get poor reviews because of the packs, ratings never get impacted byt the policies behind monetizing. Another huge example is GTA5, who had amazing reviews throughout despite the microtransactions... As for the addons and DLC, people only conmplain in cases where the game gets truncated for the purpose of selling the DLC later on, otherwise it's normal for them to not be free and nobody has issues with that...

@obsidian_born: REQ system is far from fair given it offers stat-modified weapons which destroys the balance in Warzone. Not to mention the focus on the microtransactions severely hampered it's feature set. It's significantly feels sparse in features compared to previous titles. I say that as a big Halo fan.

@jedikv:

The stat boosted weapons are given out at certain REQ levels... Warzone really is balanced for how chaotic it is. In general though it is meant for casual gaming.

"It's significantly feels sparse compared to other titles" ... I think I know what you are trying to say...? But there is a lot load more content and game modes, custom options, and forge options than ANY Halo game yet and any other shooter to date. You really need to reevaluate your views. You have some mental barriers you can not see through it seems. I refer to that as "goggles." Open your mind and perceive without emotional attachments blinding you from... Truth.

I have gripes with Halo 5 and some of the REQ items to be sure. But Halo 5 really does bring Halo fans the best Halo multiplayer to date.

@obsidian_born:It can't be balanced when there's an element of RNG which can be annoying when you're killed by a silenced DMR or an AR with a scope which eliminates the weapon control aspect Halo is known for.

I am a fan but not a fanboy so I'm not afraid to identify some of the missteps 343/MS have taken with one of my favorite series' since Halo 4. The fact that they put so much resources in to that one game mode (Because it's the 'money maker') has meant that a lot of the usual Halo staples (like map variety, decent big team maps and modes, campaign, decent customs, split screen etc) has been delayed or poorly implemented. It took 6 months for the game to come close (but not match) the feature set that previous Halo titles came with out of the box.

I agree though it plays really well once you strip out all the BS that kind of detracts from the game.

@reaper131: I played it prior to 5gb patch , does it fix any of the minor freezing issues and odd low res background textures? I am only upto chapter 4 so really only played the introduction as such. The worst graphical issue was the part where he comes up from the dive on the boat, on the other side of the river . The graphics look more like PS2 with complete lack of detail and very low res. Like they forgot to remove the placeholder assets.

Also the ocean when i looked over a cliff ran the waves going in and out at about half the framerate it should have been making it glitchy and odd. You could actually see square like shapes where the ocean didn't render properly and the physics not properly implemented. I am nit picky as i have slight Autism but it was pretty damn obvious all the same.

@deviltaz35: I've only played with the patch but there has been NO minor freezes. Did you start playing as soon as you put the disc in? It takes quite a while to install so maybe it was still installing in the background while you were playing. This would account for stutters and textures not loading quick enough thus appearing low quality.

@analgrin: Thanks I'll give it a try, i was only upto chapter 4 but not impressed with it so far to be honest. I kind of was way more impressed with Uncharted 2 on PS3 , playing through that again at the moment on the PS4 remaster and i really prefer that game.

It's a few things though i know it was inevitable to portray Drake as much older but i don't really want to look at a fugly character with lines on his face , i'd rather play the young strapping adventurer getting into all sorts of trouble.

Getting sick of games like this starting off with them as kids though , Was annoying in Assassins creed and was equally as annoying here as it felt too much like Assassins Creed.

i guess the predictions by some people that Naught Dog's level of quality in their games would suffer when some of their members parted ways was dead wrong. Naughty Dog still has it.

@barcaazul: Wow that is terrible service. Any extras for ordering there? . I just drove to a store and picked my copy up last night. Only up to chapter 4 so far but not blown away by it from what i have played. Was slightly bored of the opening before it was over.

It's just that the whole opening , or most of it has been done before , nothing unique about it really. It just played like Assassins Creed voiced by Nolan North but not as exciting as no sword play.

@ArabrockermanX: Given it's a 2.5 year old system that some say wasn't even equal to a low end PC back then, let alone now, and yet this has produced graphics FAR BETTER than any PC game Ive played (I own a i7 6700k gtx 970 PC) then yes this is a technical powerhouse of a game.

@analgrin: You probably need a better GPU, A single 970 won't give you enough power to play the latest games will all the bells and whistles on PC. 970 is very poor at shadow rendering in higher details for a start. For the price i'd probably get a 1070 as you would notice a huge difference over what you have now. Personally i'm waiting for the TI versions of the new Pascals though as i already have a 980ti.

The biggest difference with PC games is the smoothness, i can play many games at 144 fps and it is so much smoother than what consoles can offer it's hard to even describe.

You have a decent CPU just get a decent GPU to go with it.

@deviltaz35: I don't need a better GPU. GTX 970 is still a high end card. The GTX 1070 which replaces it isn't even out until next month. I play all modern games fully maxed out @ 1080p or higher using DSR. (Just Cause 3, GTA 5, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 etc) Why are you telling me how PC games play when I own one?? I own a 120hz 3D monitor so I know about fluidity, but I also use my 42" 1080p tv. In fact your comment doesn't seem to have anything to do with the OP or my comment,

Fact still stands Uncharted 4 looks better than anything on PC right now, including the almighty Crysis 3. You can actually see the breeze affecting the surface of pools of water. Hair looks real. There's a woman (Nadine) with curly hair and the way it moves is realistic and not over the top like some TressFx hair effects are.

Look at this link to see for yourself, just look at her glorious hair when she turns up about 20 seconds in lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B72nmTmeaJs all live in game footage. (something like 95% of all cutscenes are rendered live)

Also the way the light catches the outer layers of hair and scatters is better than anything I've seen on PC. That's why, in answer to the OP, Uncharted 3 can be considered a powerhouse of a game.

@analgrin: Do you mean Uncharted 4 :) . I dunno i just don't get that urge to play this much . I loved Uncharted 2 it was amazing for it's time this just doesn't have that pull. i am going to sit down and play it without interruption over the next week anyway as i have 9 days off after today :). I could just be getting to distracted with life at the moment and letting things that i usually wouldn't bother about affect me more than usual. It's just hard going from 144 fps on my PC with 980ti to 30 fps on console. 60 is not as dramatic a difference is all.

Don't you think they could have offered the choice though , The Last of us allows you to play it at either 30 or 60 so why not have that option with a lower graphics quality setting. I would take that in a heartbeat.

@horizonwriter: Even though i didn't think much of the game, The Last of us looked just as good pretty much.

It's just not the massive jump in visuals outside of cutscenes that i thought it would be after all the hype.

I was more impressed with Uncharted 2 and 3 on PS3 for that hardware.

@deviltaz35: I think that goes along more with creating realistic environments than anything else. There are some pretty amazing landscapes and views throughout the game but its still a game rooted in reality and actual locations as opposed to something fantastical like the amazing view you get when you first walk up to a cliff looking out over Irithyll of the Boreal Valley in Dark Souls 3, which pretty much looks like a massive, haunted medieval snow globe with a crescent moon and aurora borealis glowing above. Some of the most incredible looking things in past Uncharted games were things that couldn't possibly exist - the ice palace, Shambala, Iram of the Pillars. I'm only on chapter 9 so far so I don't know if there's anything that compares to those locations in UC4 but if there is I'm betting it's one of the best looking things in the game. I also believe that the real beauty in UC4's graphics is in the amazing amount of detail that fills the world, not just the actual fidelity of it all. Elena's facial expressions alone killed me. She made me want to go apologize to my girl and I haven't even done anything wrong.
