Uncharted 4 Is a "Technical Powerhouse," Analysis Says

"The best-looking console game we've ever tested."

With Uncharted 4: A Thief's End scheduled to come out tomorrow, May 10, Digital Foundry has now posted its technical analysis for the long-awaited PlayStation 4 action-adventure game. The site gushed about the game, saying it raises the bar for current-generation games.

"This is a must-play experience that delivers the rare mix of pitch perfect gameplay and high-end visuals," Digital Foundry said. "Uncharted 4 is the technical powerhouse we've been waiting for."

Now Playing: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Video Review

"The set-pieces are more impressive, the maps larger, the characters and environments more detailed and the gameplay mechanics are richer than ever before. This is the real deal."

Uncharted 4 runs on the latest version of Naughty Dog's proprietary engine, which, this time around, allows for an "almost obscene wealth of new rendering features," Digital Foundry said.

The game runs at 1080p/30fps for its campaign and 900p/60fps for multiplayer. Regarding the campaign visuals, Digital Foundry said, "Uncharted 4 delivers the best image quality we've seen in a console game to date."

No Caption Provided

"Thin edges are remarkably clean, shader aliasing is almost non-existent, and shimmering is all but eliminated," the site explained. "Large, complex fields of detailed foliage remain razor sharp even at a distance while finer details on Nate's weapons remain clearly visible."

On the subject of character rendering, Digital Foundry said Uncharted 4 looks better in this department than games like Halo 5: Guardians, Quantum Break, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. "Uncharted 4 pushes things even further," it said.

According to the report, skin and fat "bend and move realistically," while Drake's shirt will react to the wind as it should. "Even his chest hair is impacted by the wind," Digital Foundry said.

Digital Foundry's full report offers a deep, deep dive into Uncharted 4's technical performance, touching on things like its use of real-time cutscenes and how the AI is smarter this time around, among other things. The report wasn't completely positive, however, as it also mentioned long load times and a photo mode that is not as robust as it could have been. Additionally, Digital Foundry said shadow quality could be better.

But overall, Uncharted 4 blew Digital Foundry away.

"There is a clear dedication to excellence here and it has paid off and Uncharted 4 is the best-looking console game we've ever tested," it said.

Uncharted 4 launches on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Reviews for the game started to show up last week, and critics are handing out high praise. It is the last game in the series Naughty Dog plans to make and the final one that stars Nathan Drake. However, there could be an Uncharted 5.

GameSpot scored Uncharted 4 a 10/10.

"In its writing, in its design, in its understanding of what makes games unique, Uncharted 4 is something to aspire to," critic Mike Mahardy said. "It's a shining example. And we'll be talking about it for years to come."

In other news, co-director Bruce Straley has advised against rushing through Uncharted 4. "Take your time. Its not like the last three. Don't try to gobble it down in one sitting. Settle in. Enjoy the moment," he said.

Halo 5 would look as good but they decide to hit 60FPS, Gears of War 4 is 30FPS so it should be up to the the same standards as Uncharted 4 graphically

@Supabul: Looking forward to seeing it but nothing will be as they just don't have the amazing art direction and focus of Uncharted. Nor is the same sort of game either. Halo 5 it's important for FPS to run as fast as possible so i think it was the right decision.

@fedor:

It's 30FPS and using Unreal Engine 4, it will be a graphical powerhouse like Uncharted 4

@Supabul: They got 60fps because they dropped the res to like 810, dynamically. If gears 4 is 1080p, there's no way it's gonna look as good as uncharted. Plus naughty dog does some amazing things with the hardware they have to use.

@joshrmeyer:

Uncharted 4's single player looks a gen ahead of its 60FPS multiplayer, Gears 4 single player is doing the same thing as Uncharted 4, they will focus on 30 FPS single player and focus on pushing the console to the max with Unreal Engine 4

@BabeNewelll: haha hardly , Uncharted series still looks better than most PC games and i love my 980ti but it struggles to match the visual fidelity of parts of uncharted. I'd say Vanishing of Ethan Carter is one of the best looking PC titles.

@louixiii: There is one i was playing with pretty good puzzles, it was set in the arctic region but i can't remember the name of it. I remember it had all these explosive traps you had to work out how to disarm in a certain pattern if that helps anyone.

It was similar to an Indiana Jones game , It was alot more difficult than uncharted games too.

I only got it as it was $4 in a sale.

@louixiii: PC don't have exclusives unless the developer want it that way, or creates a game that simply can't be done on consoles or mid to lower end PCs. The PC is an open platform. The more they push, the less people can run the game, the lower their profits. Development has become increasingly expensive, so games like Star Citizen are ones where they get to cut loose.

Sony is targeting the layfolk with UC. They are an entertainment company and they are looking to fill seats in the theater. Lots of explosions and scripted set pieces. I like that they try to make things look...alive and spend time on animation, however, it is mainly done to attract the masses.

@louixiii: There is no single company that owns the PC platform, so comparing PC exclusive games to Sony published PS4 games doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

@louixiii: Typically for technical reasons (inputs or processing power), not commercial. Uncharted aren't kept off PC because it can't play them, they're kept off because they're a system seller for Sony. Since there's nobody controlling PC like that there's no pressure to make exclusive games for the sake of exclusivity.

@pongley: So games like Apotheon are PC exclusive because of "technical reasons"? Seriously? I know why Uncharted was kept off of PC dude..I'm a gamer. Now what does this have to do with naming a action packed shooter that's exclusive to the PC that comes ANYWHERE close to Uncharted 4?

You won't find one...which is why everyone is up in arms right now lol

@louixiii: Not so as smart people game on all 3 systems :P) . I still buy games for my PS3 , well Ratchet and Clank collection as i'd rather the fun of the 60 fps over the lame 30 fps of the new one :( . Yes i own that too and it's damn boring to play.

Proof that you don't need a 3000$ PC to have good graphics. It's all in the designers' talent.

@nurnberg: It will take some time for the entitled PC users to realize they are being scammed, but if it's something that will get them thinking, it's how good Uncharted 4 looks on a 400$ rig... All hail Naughty Dog...

@nurnberg: A sub $2000 PC would do just fine. The graphics are good for a console. There is a lot of hyperbole thrown around and that is because the game is on a console. Not to mention exclusive.

If Sony sanctioned this game for PC (or any pub did for any console exclusive) and gave the dev adequate time to work on it, the PC version would demolish the PS4 version. There is no other argument.

@pspearman: yƩah i can't wait to see what pascal delivers when they release the enthusiast level versions. Not interested in either 1070 or 1080 personally. I want the big one with 1TB bandwidth ,over 3800 cuda cores , HBM2 memory 16 GB . That will be awesome. i still think we will see it before the end of the year. I'd happily pay $1000 for it.

Just not interested in 256bit cards which is all the 1070 and 1080 are.
