Uncharted 4 Is a "Technical Powerhouse," Analysis Says

"The best-looking console game we've ever tested."

With Uncharted 4: A Thief's End scheduled to come out tomorrow, May 10, Digital Foundry has now posted its technical analysis for the long-awaited PlayStation 4 action-adventure game. The site gushed about the game, saying it raises the bar for current-generation games.

"This is a must-play experience that delivers the rare mix of pitch perfect gameplay and high-end visuals," Digital Foundry said. "Uncharted 4 is the technical powerhouse we've been waiting for."

Now Playing: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Video Review

"The set-pieces are more impressive, the maps larger, the characters and environments more detailed and the gameplay mechanics are richer than ever before. This is the real deal."

Uncharted 4 runs on the latest version of Naughty Dog's proprietary engine, which, this time around, allows for an "almost obscene wealth of new rendering features," Digital Foundry said.

The game runs at 1080p/30fps for its campaign and 900p/60fps for multiplayer. Regarding the campaign visuals, Digital Foundry said, "Uncharted 4 delivers the best image quality we've seen in a console game to date."

No Caption Provided

"Thin edges are remarkably clean, shader aliasing is almost non-existent, and shimmering is all but eliminated," the site explained. "Large, complex fields of detailed foliage remain razor sharp even at a distance while finer details on Nate's weapons remain clearly visible."

On the subject of character rendering, Digital Foundry said Uncharted 4 looks better in this department than games like Halo 5: Guardians, Quantum Break, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. "Uncharted 4 pushes things even further," it said.

According to the report, skin and fat "bend and move realistically," while Drake's shirt will react to the wind as it should. "Even his chest hair is impacted by the wind," Digital Foundry said.

Digital Foundry's full report offers a deep, deep dive into Uncharted 4's technical performance, touching on things like its use of real-time cutscenes and how the AI is smarter this time around, among other things. The report wasn't completely positive, however, as it also mentioned long load times and a photo mode that is not as robust as it could have been. Additionally, Digital Foundry said shadow quality could be better.

But overall, Uncharted 4 blew Digital Foundry away.

"There is a clear dedication to excellence here and it has paid off and Uncharted 4 is the best-looking console game we've ever tested," it said.

Uncharted 4 launches on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Reviews for the game started to show up last week, and critics are handing out high praise. It is the last game in the series Naughty Dog plans to make and the final one that stars Nathan Drake. However, there could be an Uncharted 5.

GameSpot scored Uncharted 4 a 10/10.

"In its writing, in its design, in its understanding of what makes games unique, Uncharted 4 is something to aspire to," critic Mike Mahardy said. "It's a shining example. And we'll be talking about it for years to come."

For more on the game's critical reception, check out this review roundup.

In other news, co-director Bruce Straley has advised against rushing through Uncharted 4. "Take your time. Its not like the last three. Don't try to gobble it down in one sitting. Settle in. Enjoy the moment," he said.

@emptycow718: Kissing Sony ass is reaching it slightly since they gave Driveclub and The Order a score of 5. Those scores were aligned with what other reviewers said back then just like how Uncharted 4 high praise is currently aligned with other reviewers right now.

This is so stupid. Gamespot is getting revenue by regurgitating everything Eurogamer said, this is just a superficial summary of everything written on the article you're referring to. Do your own reporting work and make your own write up of your findings.

@Gomtor: Anyone who wants decent framerates it seems :( . Again i told myself 30 fps would be fine you'll get used to it but it's just chore playing games like this at 30 fps as the camera is crap and slow for one thing.

To be fair i am used to PC games on a 144 hz screen though so it's a huge step down , also been playing Ratchet and Clank collection at 60 fps on PS3 in the past week.

I don't see the obsession with better visuals when it means sacrificing a decent framerate to achieve it. Just hope the reason they did this is they already have plans to ensure it is 60 fps on Neo.

@slappy54: As a CONSOLE game it's the best graphic wise. Everyone knows a well built PC can run almost every game at max settings and maxed AA. But if you were to compared Tomb Raider on the CONSOLE to Uncharted there would be no contest.

@slappy54: Not true. Just because the PC version has a better frame rate doesn't mean that it is more detailed than Uncharted. It's about subtle details and apparently Uncharted has it in SPADES

@louixiii: don't look too closely or you will find things that get annoying , For some odd reason Water is not handled with as much care and attention all the time . Not the crazy extent it used to be in other uncharted games anyhow. Bit disappointed so far. Graphically buildings and such are amazing , rendered with incredible detail but then you notice shadows are just basically crap. It's like they really wanted to make the best looking game ever and just ran out of processing power.

30 fps isnt a "Technical Powerhouse" .... Its visual in the other hand is decent and impressive for a Console since they arent all that powerful and are outdated. 60fps at 1080p is a Technical Powerhouse not 30fps and 1080p along with 900p and 30fps for online lol

@carl_randall: why do numbers mean so God damn much to people? Just use your eyes! Quantum Break wasn't a "Technical Powerhouse" but the game still looked great. There is more to a great looking game than being 1080p 60fps. The Last of Us Remaster can run at 1080p 60fps....does it look better than Uncharted 4? No because the game engine isn't as optimized.

@scottyp360: It's not far off it and it would have been good enough if Uncharted 4 looked that good and ran at 60. They should have delayed this game until Neo arrived.

I am considering putting it away until Neo if they can confirm Neo will run it at 60.

@carl_randall: You think that because whatever game is 1080p60, it's better made than the technical wizardry Naughty Dog achieved with Uncharted, Remedy with Quantum Break, Square with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Rockstar with GTA V (on last-gen, in this case)?

Also => "Uncharted 4's visuals are decent". Get the f out of here.

@carl_randall: Total package is technical powerhouse. Frame-rate alone doesn't mean much if it severely sacrifice details... on the other hand, keep pushing details and even SLI Titan X2 will at some point drop below 60fps. There is always trade-off.

ND decided to go for details as far as they could within reasonably stable 30fps. Game looks absolutely gorgeous - I cannot think of any game in the genre looking this good, on any platform. I think they have quite accomplished the mission they have put in front of them.

@bfeinberg: Who doesn't? Comes with affordable hardware price, though.

I have replaced my PS4 500GB HDD with 2TB HDD last year. Was thinking about SSD instead, but was not willing to spit more than 500GB SSD value... and that was a bit too small. Also, it doesn't seem that consoles get same data transfer boost as PC does with SSD.

But regardless... just waiting SSDs to go down a bit further, and probably will look at sticking 1TB SSD in. 500GB was small, but my 2TB HDD still has less than 1TB data on it... and with few games to spare. Recon it's worth a risk. If I'm not impressed with the gain, there are always some PCs around the house that could use extra SSD inside :)

@bfeinberg: Last of us is kind of boring though to be fair i was bored of it on PS3 , Got it at a good price on PS4 hoping the 60 fps would make it so much better . Struggling to finish it as it's just monotonous. It has none of that flair that makes uncharted games so great.

No idea how it won so many awards as i would have given them all to Uncharted series instead.

The biggest insult was lack of puzzles in Last of Us - ''Oh look we need a ladder'' take 10 steps, ''There is a ladder here'' . It was just pointless and annoying.

@deviltaz35: they are completely different games. Uncharted is an action adventure game that is fast paced, full of spectacular set pieces. The Last of Us is more grounded in reality, despiye the zombie aspect. Its a survival action game. The focus isn't fast pace, exciting action. The story, emotions, and idea of surviving in this post apocalyptic world are the draw here.

It would be like trying to compare Indiana Jones and the Walking Dead. Both are great works but you don't watch the Walking Dead expecting the same excitement and set pieces as Indiana Jones.

@Arkhalipso: Truth hurts, most reviewers are too afraid to lay it on the line. I pay for games with my own money whether it be PC , PS4 or XboxOne and this game is just not as great as people make out. Art direction aside it's obviously held back by lack of hardware oomph.

Maybe Neo should have come out first before they release this so we could see it in a better light. There is no way in it's current form it's a 10 out of 10 game as the controls are not accurate enough, responsive enough due to low framerate.
