Uncharted 4 Dev on Single-Player DLC: "We Have No Idea What We're Going to Do Yet"

Plus: Why the studio is ending Drake's story with Uncharted 4.

Following on from the announcement of a single-player DLC for the upcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, developer Naughty Dog has revealed that it has not quite yet thought about how it is going to handle the DLC's content. Director of communications Arne Meyer provided some insight to the situation in an interview with GameSpot.

"I was talking with Neil (game director) about a month ago when that was just revealed and reading all the stories and fan reactions about it. It was interesting because people are thinking maybe we'll hold back some of the story or stuff like that. But he's like, 'I have no idea what we're going to do with that.' We're so busy on the actual game and I was talking to him and saying that we're taking a big risk here because we have no idea what we're going to do yet. We've committed to putting something together and it has to be a high level of quality and have a really engaging story, and we've said that this is the final chapter. We have all these things we need to resolve at some point but we have no idea what that is," he said.

Meyer continued, "Neil hasn't even begun to think about what the storyline for the single-player DLC is. Then obviously we don't have the resources to work on it because everyone's working on the game. We just know that we're going to do it."

Uncharted 4 will wrap up the story of series protagonist Nathan Drake, although that may not necessarily spell the end of the franchise. Meyer also explained why Naughty Dog made the decision to finish Drake's saga with the game.

"It may be scary from the outside to say this, but we don't have a franchise plan or anything, or even a big idea of where anything is going. We treat each individual game as with the equal level of importance and approach it fresh every time. We've always said to ourselves internally that when we're in the pre-production stage, we're trying to figure out what type of game we're trying to make. Do we continue the series or not? If things don't feel fresh or it doesn't feel like we have an actual story to tell, it doesn't feel like we're able to try new things or innovate with gameplay, then we'll start thinking about stepping away from it. Every time it's worked out in that we're like, oh yeah we have a story to tell," Meyers explained.

"Now with moving to the PS4 and being able to take everything we learned from the previous three games and apply it here and looking at where the story arcs went for the first three games, it feels like a natural time to step away. It was something we were coming to realise in the early phases of development that it was feeling like the right time."

Uncharted 4 will be released on March 18 in 2016, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

Pro tip: Don't make any DLC.
DLC has never been the strongest point of Naughty Dog imo.

"We have no idea." ... Turning on translator ... "We are going to milk this game so hard until it runs dry. And we will re-launch it on PS5 to grab the maximum amount of money!". Too much hype, too much expectation, too much advertising. Hope UC4 survives the hype train!

In other words dont buy a season pass when they haven't even completed the game yet.

I'll likely pass on the game, I didn't like the last one and frankly find the gamestyle and graphics rather boring too many games use it's formula.

Great to know they've put a lot of thought into the DLC and it's not just a shameless cash grab.

I'm really sick of all you immature whiners on here. First off, it's extra content.....not something left out of the game. The game disc will already be packed full of content. They always cram as much onto the disc as they can. Second, who cares if they announce dlc before the game release? Who does it hurt? It's actually a good thing to know that we get extra story. Third, quit whining about paying for extra content. Nobody's forcing you to buy a damn thing. Don't want it....don't buy it. It's about time you babies removed your diapers and put on some big boy pants.

I find it pretty difficult to believe Naught Dog has "no idea" what their upcoming DLC will be at this point in the development cycle for probably only their biggest launch title to date.

@d_love: I also find it difficult to believe they have no idea. Either way, it's insulting, because the sad implication, if true, is that ND is just doing a shameless cash grab and milking the franchise and if it's not true then they're just flat-out lying.

Clearly there's no inspiration for any such DLC and it was announced solely to gouge players out of more money. At least have a purpose for DLC or don't have it at all.

yet...why not have a season pass for something the developers don't even know about? I'm very excited about uncharted 4, but this season pass trend and DLC before the game is even out must stop (I speak for all games, not just this)

@mjc0961: would you rather they know what the Dlc is? That's a bigger slap in the face to say that they know what the Dlc is and that it's not included in the main game.

@mjc0961: People will pay for something that doesn't even exist yet. Despite the fact that if you wait until you play the game first, the season pass can still be bought, for cheaper, once you know if you like the game or not, and you know more about what is included. Preordering DLC is for the unintelligent or immature.

So they're planning DLC before they even know what they're going to do? Wtf, why? If there's something you'd like to add to the game after a while, fine make some DLC, but now it just sounds like "whatever happens, we still want that extra cash so DLC is coming whatever it will be."

Pretty disgusting, in my opinion.

That's right. In the early phases of development they were already faced with "oh god are we really making another Uncharted game? The last one was a bore. Can't we do something else?"

At this point naughty dog really can't do any wrong. My only complaint is that I'm getting uncharted4 instead of the last of us 2, but that's cranking the bitch -o- meter way up

Naughty Dog have always provided in terms of content both for the base game and for the DLCs, so I'm not worried, if there's gonna be a DLC, it's probably gonna be awesome.

I can't wait to play the remastered version of this game on the PS5. Uncharted 4 running at a buttery smooth 60fps. Only way to play it in my opinion.

While this is hopefully a sign that they are focused on the game and not snipping it, why have even declare that you are doing single player DLC in the first place? Better yet, why are you charging for something that is essentially currently nothing?

They don't know what they'll make to rake in extra cash, just that they'll definitely do something. What an awful way to do business. PLEASE raise AAA blockbuster prices to $65-70 at release and stop scheming to squeeze us for more months down the line.

@youre_a_sheep:

Because you really believe them when they(the publishers/developers in general not ND in particular) say they NEED DLC to survive? LMAO. They do it because they can get away with it, simple as that.

You would still get DLC even if the games were $200.

@7tizz: Uncharted is one of the best selling playstation games, and Naughty Dog never ever disappointed content-wise and DLC-wise. I understand the "only on xbox" attitude, but at least mash up some decent arguments before being a hater in the comments ...

So you have no idea what to do for single player content but have no problems making sure that mp content is ready for release date to nickel and dime unsuspecting mugs with there money, sure, sure.

I'm glad actually. Too many devs focus on DLC before they actually finish the game. Give us a good Uncharted game first, then worry about DLC.

@i_p_daily: Naughty Dog never disappointed, so why should we assume the worst now? It's probably gonna be a very awesome game, with some very awesome DLCs down the road. Except Blizzard, it's the only company I trust to not disappoint.

@i_p_daily: Not really. I was just saying it's better to not know your DLC plans before actually releasing your game. It's better indication they're focusing on the game first. Whether it applies to UC4 is irrelevant to my statement.

You came to the conclusion I believed them yourself I'm afraid...
