UK Chart: Football Manager scores number one

Sports Interactive's annual juggernaut storms to top place; neither new Bond game shakes or stirs top 10.

No Caption Provided Football Manager 2011, the latest iteration of Sega's football management sim, debuted in first place in the UK sales chart for the week ending November 6, with FIFA 11 holding in second and Fable III dipping from first to third.

Neither of Activision's just-released James Bond duo, GoldenEye 007 for the Wii and the multiformat 007 Blood Stone, landed in the top 10. Blood Stone, an action adventure game with driving segments, came in at number 18. GoldenEye, a shooter based on the classic 1997 Nintendo 64 game, fared better, entering the chart at 13.

Bigger than Bond.
Bigger than Bond.

Blood Stone's muted reception comes after a relatively low-key marketing campaign, without the benefit of being a tie-in product for a high-profile movie; though it features Daniel Craig as 007, Blood Stone isn't connected to any Bond film. By comparison, the tie-in game for 2008's Quantum of Solace, released in late October 2008, entered the UK chart at number seven. GoldenEye, on the other hand, enjoys the recognition of being a "reimagining" of the well-loved N64 title.

@ lilynipper I wasn't talking about sales. Just about sports, but he is right about the sales comment. Btw the Football Manager series is a world wide seller.

@ ducati101 Correction, this is UK sales, not world sales. So he was right to say, UK loves their football.

Football Manager doesn't have a review up so I wrote one. Check it out if you are considering getting it, also ask me any questions on it. Been playing it a lot. Awesome Game.

Funny that they even bother doing this and often just right before a big game launch which will demolish the board. COD:Black Ops will hit soon, and whether you like it or not, it's going to make a splash on that board from its name/franchise alone.

Football Manager remains in my top 10 games ever. No game has ever kept me playing that long and wanting the sequel every year, downloading every patch, striving to win, never cheat and to replay the game countless times.

Halo is nowhere to be seen. Very interesting. Glad to see Football Manager on top, it deserves it. I just wish that SI would bring the series back onto Xbox 360 as I don't have a laptop powerful enough to play the game.

Love FM games, but disappointed at neither James Bond game getting into the top 10. Also, FM this year is awesome!

if goldeneye had been a multiplatform release then it would of been much higher up the charts, shame really as it is a good game, but the wii has such terrible online that it ruins it for me really

I might pick up Fm2011 futher down the year, Although I've loved the FM games since they first came out I think they peaked in FM2009, Although I like the idea of going through a player's agent before you can buy them.

Also FM only came out on the 5th so it sold more in 1 day than the others did in a week.

I love Football Manager, It's like the most in depth RPG ever except it's about real people and the battles are football matches. It takes into account every aspect of the sport I can think of whilst being fun. It is only for football fans though as a certain amount of knowledge is assumed.

@ricardo-sene It's like smoking. You'll probably find it pointless at first but if you get over the hump, you'll be addicted for life.

The absence of both the Bond game shows that people don't really care about the franchise as much as they used to (or did they ever?) FM is a good solid franchise with deep strategic and management components. Good to see it doing well.
