Ubisoft "Wouldn't be the Same" If Vivendi Took Over, Says Exec

Ubi vice president of live operations weighs in on looming hostile takeover.

Ubisoft's vice president of live operations has weighed in on the publisher's potential takeover by Vivendi by saying, "It wouldn't be the same."

In an interview with PCGamesN, Anne Blondel states that the company's independence is what has made it successful. "I know for a fact, having been there for 20 years, that if you [separate] us from our independence, if you take away the way we like taking risks and inventing new stuff, well it’s not going to be the same Ubisoft--for me, it wouldn’t be the same.

"I know what made us so successful for 30 years, is being super independent, being very autonomous."

She goes on to say the company's independence allows it to take chances and create diverse experiences. "Sometimes we take a lot of risks, you think about The Crew, that was a risk. People would look at that like, 'Maybe it’s not going to work, another racing game, what are you thinking?' Child of Light, Valiant Hearts, all those kinds of titles."

The possible takeover has been rumbling on for a while now, with Vivendi repeatedly buying up more stock. Ubisoft, which up to this point has always been a family-run company, has attempted to safeguard its independence by buying back more shares and appointing independent directors.

Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, has said he would not continue to be CEO under a Vivendi-owned Ubisoft.

In lighter news, Ubisoft has revealed its 30 Days of Giveaways event, in celebration of both Christmas and its own 30th birthday. Check out the details, including the first free game on offer, here.

Ubisoft can't get much worse, so if it wouldn't be the same that means it could only get better.

Your execs are inside trader thieves, you should be in jail. Also, you are a PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANY. You are not independent, stop lying to our faces.

We certainly hope not. Ubisoft is deep in the corporate cartel crapper. Perhaps if the executives had fairly shared the revenue with all the employees that do the actual work and proper product development their games over the past 5 years would not have sucked.

Had Ubi not screwed up EVERY franchise, then maybe they would be having this problem. I can still remember when Tom Clancy's name on something was a GOOD sign.

Take over may be something good. Tired of ubishit copy pasta rehashes. They kill good franchise like prince of persia, might & magic. How many more towers we need to keep unlocking in farcry and assassin creed? you deserve this

I like that a lot of the haters rolled over here directly from the Watch Dogs 2 review, meaning they are still shelling out money on day one to buy their products.

Yeah...hostile take over might be exactly what needs to be done in order to get the game we want. It certainly couldn't get any worse. They may even show trailers with real gameplay and when the game comes out it might actually look the same. Problem is you have a lot of big game names that were cool and then you got greedy....poor execution with yearly releases. And shame on whoever made me experience the assassin's Creed 3 ending. I hope you get hit by a bus.

@deadlyshadow698: "It certainly couldn't get any worse." Oh, my sweet summer child. Ubisoft isn't the best game company but if you think a Vivendi takeover will somehow make Ubisoft better you couldn't be more wrong.

Ubisoft is the master of destroying good games with horrible sequels. I hope that Vivendi's take over turn out to be a good point.

Well after reading that UBI have decided to cut back on the narrative in what are already narrative scarce games, I can't say that this takeover would be a bad thing. Sick of the hundreds of collectibles that impede on my map. It's cheap and crass.

They might need to start making actual good games instead of promoting and packaging the garbage they currently have, that's a whole lotta actual software development work!!

So many haters that are just saying the same nonsense that everyone else does, Why not make your own educated opinion rather than trying to fit in.

I guess I might be looking at this a little too much, but what makes this a hostile takeover? Vivendi is buying up lots of Ubisoft stock, that it?

@poe13: Non-hostile takeover: Offer a price for the company, that company's board of directors agrees, you pay the money and get the assets.

Hostile takeover: You offer to buy a company, they refuse. You buy more than 51% of the company's stock, nominate your own puppet board of directors, vote passes since you hold 51% of the votes, and then your puppet board "agrees" to "sell" the company to you.

Grey area: You offer to buy a company, they refuse, you buy some of the company's stock, whine/lobby to other shareholders about how the current board won't sell, then get enough of the shareholders on your side to get 51% of the votes and oust the current board and replace them with one who will sell you the company.

@poe13: As far as I understood a hostile takeover is exactly that. Everytime you buy stock of any company you basically control a part of the company. When you manage to get over 50% of those stock the company belongs to you.

So, Anne, you complain about how horrible it'd be losing independence. Betcha sang a different tune when Ubisoft gobbled up independent studios.

Well, they do need to change a bit, WD2 is a fantastic game, so if you can make the other games coming, like For Honor, great, and do something truly innovative with the next AC and Far Cry games, they could really be great again.

R6: Siege and Child of Light are the only games I've enjoyed of theirs in a depressingly long time, so I wouldn't mind less of the same. Interested in Valiant Hearts though. It's funny they are calling those low budget throwaway projects high risk though, that's really cute. How the heck is an online racing game high risk? There have been tons of them.

Ubisoft are the experts at giving me some serious buyers remorse.

@spaced92: Valiant Hearts is actually a really great game. It's not particularly difficult or long, but I really enjoyed it, and I recommend picking it up. It's 50% of in the Steam sale right now.

@bojan_sokol: than your not a gamer if you hope that one of the biggest companies in gaming should go down.... From last years from biggest companies biggest ripoff was from Activision. EA ruined batlefront but titanfall2 and batlefield are great. Ubisoft is one of the rarest companies which is ready to take a risks and best example new ips like steep and for honor. Taking break in Assian creed series, taking far cry to stone age. ahh yes but lets bring them down because they downgroaded graphics for watchdogs and division.

@jancis25: They get brought down because of the yearly franchises, false promises, uPlay and DLC...they are changing, but trying to be flippant about their failings is laughable.

@kyelo: Not to forget the depleting quality of their games. The new asscreed games are dull and repetitive, Watchdogs and its sequel were equally bland and pretty much all their games after Asscreed 4 and FC4 were bland turds.
