Ubisoft Thinks Assassin's Creed Movie Won't Make Money, Is Okay With That

"We are not going to earn a lot of money from it," says European boss.

Ubisoft's has said its upcoming Assassin's Creed movie won't make a lot of money, but its aim is not for the film to be lucrative. Speaking to MCV, Ubisoft's European boss, Alain Corre, said the movie's intended purpose is instead to raise awareness of the franchise.

"We are not going to earn a lot of money from it," he said. "It is a lot more a marketing thing. It's also good for the image of the brand."

"Although we will make some money, it's not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin's Creed to more people," he added.

"We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin's Creed games."

Ubisoft previously said it believes Assassin's Creed will break the history of mediocre video game to movie adaptations.

Assassin's Creed opens on December 21, a week after Star Wars spinoff Rogue One comes out. It is just the start of Ubisoft's plans to leverage video game properties for cinema.

Ubisoft has established an internal film division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, to develop films alongside Hollywood production companies. It apparently was quite involved in the production of Assassin's Creed to ensure it was staying true to the game franchise.

In addition to Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft and Fox reportedly have plans for two Assassin's Creed sequels. On top of those, Splinter Cell and The Division will also be making the jump to the big screen.

This is what I don't understand about the industry sometimes. Disney Infinity earns Disney a profit, so they're stopping it and shutting down the company that made it. The AC movie is assumed to not make them any money...heck might end up a financial loss, plans to make sequels anyway. I think these morons don't actually know how money works...

I actually think the movie might do some good, I rather reserve judgment before it releases.

The more i hear about the production of the movie the less interested i become. With things like we are aiming to make a movie and not a videogame movie aka we are gonna **** with the lore which will cause core fans to hate it. The fact that the poeple in charge of making the movie never played the games, even Fastbender said that he knew nothing about it and just went with it as the filming continued.

Now ubi is allready backing off the hype knowing its not gonna live up. Also a week after star wars? Seriously? Do these poeple know anything about the world they live in? Poeple will use their money to go to an established and hyped franchise and not to a new movie which is most likely gonna be underwhelming.

A lot of money is very abstract and subjective term, its depending on what extent you content or how greed you are ....

If MoneySoft is not aiming for money, then they are trying to aim the long term goals, which is to create awareness and boost the visibility of the franchise.

Is that why they've been pushing out at least one new game every year as well? To "raise awareness"? These guys just don't know when to stop.

Ubisoft sucks when it comes to being in touch with their audience. and overall is one of the worst companies out there, despite the fact that most of their products are good. When it comes to the movie, the only think that bothers me about the trailer, is the crappy song that plays in the background. Everything else looks great, so at this point I don't see any reason why it would be a flop. At least it doesn't use UPlay as DRM.

@Atombomb1981: Most of their games mission design were uninspiring, so i couldn't agree with the term of 'Good' games.

So your core fan base got you to this point, your core fan base supported the idea to take a year off in between games. Your core fan base supported the idea of a movie and has tried to be positive about it as much as they could, but this movie isn't for the core fan base in your eyes?

I hope I simply misinterpreted that as I'm tired, but that seems like the biggest middle finger to the people who gave you all that money for the house your family lives in. You're welcome I guess?

If you aren't going to take movies seriously, something even Lego was able to do, then please don't fecking bother.

@DanZillaUK: Of course this movie isn't for the core fan base. If you assume " core fan base" is equal to the number of copies the biggest-selling AC title sold, it would be about 12.5 million (AC III). If those 12.5 million people go to the theater and spend approximately $12 for a ticket, that would be a box office gross of $150 million, i.e. a bomb when compared to the movie's production and P&A budgets.

That number gets even worse when you realize the games have been on a downward trajectory since then, reducing "core fan base" to a smaller and smaller figure.

@DanZillaUK: As long as the next game's sales increase, the core can go to hell :). Standard practice in games industry, especially for any franchise that's been around a long time.

AC is a bomb before release? Why bother making a movie at all? Anyone that would be interested in buying that type of game is probably already aware of the franchise. Square made a Final Fantasy movie that almost bankrupted the company, but no big deal, it's not like another company's pushing a hostile takeover of Ubisoft!

"what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin's Creed games" Yeah, future AC games, because who cares about the old games, the ones that were made before people started complaining about franchise fatigue.

what a crock... a corporation that is not interested in making money? my ass! this is the first sign that the movie will be a disappointment... just did not expect the producer of the franchise to be the one to admit it lol :D

@Xristophoros: There's a difference between expecting something to be highly profitable and simply making some money. Their priorities are clearly not "we're gonna make all the money!", but rather have this movie as a "gateway drug" into heavier stuff, i.e. AC games. Much more devious if you ask me :P.

@Hurvl: wait... but everyone already knows about the ac series of games. how could anyone not by this point? they have been thrown in our face on an annual basis for close to a decade now... why would ubi need to market them even further than they already have with a film that is destined to lose money? they did not produce the film with the intention to lose money... that is certain. no film is ever greenlit unless there is a decent possibility it will turn a profit. that is how hollywood works. this dumb pr statement is just a way for them to prepare their investors for revenue loss prior to the film bombing. they don't want to surprise their investors with this one due to the possibility of vivendi takeover looming. they need all the support they can get.

@Xristophoros: Remember that "everyone" watches movies but only gamers play AC console games. Maybe they want to raise awareness for their mobile games, or longer term for streamed games, whatever.

@Xristophoros: First of all, far from everyone knows about AC. Even if they have seen commercials, that doesn't mean that they have been wooed enough to buy it. Making a (Ubi hopes) kick ass film about AC could be more effective at getting more people to buy an AC game than 100 ads. Secondly, what is considered a bomb very much depends on the expectations and Ubi doesn't have great expectations. I would think the investors would have been the first to know this. Wikipedia says the movie budget is 150-200 million, so anything less than a roughly 100 million dollar opening is a disappointment and no one is expecting that huge of an opening. This movie is an investment and investments don't always pay off immediately.

@Hurvl: so essentially, due to diminishing returns and people losing interest in the ac games, ubi needs to find new suckers to jump in? their solution, instead of actually moving the series of games forward in meaningful ways, is to find a new userbase? making a 2 hour commercial is going to succeed in bringing this vision to fruition? i find that strategy really misguided and destined to fail. maybe it is for the best that it fails and they can finally make a new ip that is as far from ac as possible and actually good.

@Xristophoros: Maybe Ubi did intend to lose money? Putting a sci-fi fantasy movie up against Star Wars seems like suicide!

@speed45823: vibe did is the definition of evil in gaming. Activision bought their freedom after what Vivendi did. Besides don't be so sure that Vivendi will be taken over. You all might bitch and moan like little babies but their games are still making money. They are not the first to have issues with their games. Ubisoft has said it would either get money for th government, private investors, or merge with another company. Anything to avoid Vivendi taken over.

I have to laugh at how everyone says that AC is still or a crap franchise but CoD is released every year. People complain about that too. Yet that game makes money. Ubisoft will make an AC for next year and it will sell well.

@face76: I mean yea, the gullible 10 year old kids will happily buy another iteration of COD / AC. But as you grow up, you'll lose taste for such games and will seek out more refined games. The reason why Ubisoft / Activision makes money is because their games are targeted at young demographic...and there's no shortage of young demographic as the population are increasing day by day. Just because it's making money doesn't necessarily mean it's good. AC series has bit the dust and now COD series is about to fall as well. It's only a matter of time now.

Companies like Ubisoft, EA and Activision will happily milk their franchises dry till people begs them to stop. And then they make some more till people stops buying them. And only then do they move on making a new generic IP with a new paint job and milking it dry again. Innovation is lost with these companies. There are smaller companies who makes far superior quality and innovative games out there who actually deserves our money. To them, innovation and fun is the key. To companies like EA, Ubisoft and Activision, it's all about the money and how to rip off their customers using cheap and scum tactics.

From looking at the trailer, it does peek my interest going to go see this Assassin's Creed movie despite my last AC game was Black Flag and after that, I stop caring for the franchise. Since it's opening late December, I say that's a good spot for the holiday, so I think it'll do fine and opening up before Rogue One starts is a smart move.
