Ubisoft Says Players More Open to DLC Now -- Are You?

“DLC is pretty much accepted."

Ubisoft VP of digital publishing Chris Early has said that players don’t resist DLC and other digital content for games as much as they used to.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Early noted that barely any players complained about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s “Time saver” DLC packs, which unlock resources and hidden locations in the game you can also earn through normal play.

"There was no resistance," Early said. "Maybe there were 12 guys somewhere who said something, but whatever. As a whole, there wasn't a problem."

Whereas in the past players would complain that such features should be added to the game as cheat codes, Early believes that Ubisoft is seeing less of a negative reaction these days because the publisher does a better job of communicating with the player community. He said that Ubisoft also tries to make DLC that adds to the overall experience instead of asking players to pay for content that should be in the game to begin with, so they don’t feel forced to pay for anything.

"I think there are some models that are accepted now,” Early said. “DLC is pretty much accepted. Season pass is pretty much accepted. Now it's interesting when you start to think of Season Pass as a Service Pass. For our Season Pass holders, I know we hold events for them specifically, so it's little bit more than just DLC content. So there's an evolution going on there."

Nope. I only buy it if I know it was created AFTER the game was finished and only if it adds a considerable amount of content to the game.

The only DLCs I've bought were the occasional Halo, Gears, COD map pack, the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles for Oblivion and that house making one for Skyrim. Other than that I don't touch them.

I will NEVER use DLC to "speed up the game", like in Forza Horizon you can get double popularity microtransactions and crap like that and buying the Horizon map to show up all of the billboard signs (even though they are on the internet for free sigh!).

<< LINK REMOVED >> You only grabbed the house DLC in Skyrim?

Dragonborn was easily the best DLC Skyrim offered. Though compared with Shivering Isles on Oblivion? It was lacking.

DLC is best as a expansion without pulling content from its original source. Activison who? I'll hold onto my Dark Souls 2 session pass over recycled map packs thank you :)

<< LINK REMOVED >> I didn't like Skyrim in general. I bought the house because I thought it would be fun. Riding a dragon where you aren't really riding a dragon and just watching it fly into the distance is crap.

The kid doesn't understand that if you're going to bullshit, at least be realistic/believable.

@The_Last_Paladi I like steam sales, when you can buy a game and the DLC for cheaper than the game itself.

On another tangent, why doesn't DLC get price-drops like the game itself.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The publisher drops the price of the original game in the hope the new player will give in on the DLC once they start playing. I recall Bioshock Infinite, and Borderlands doing that.

No, I would take an old style expansion over DLC anyday, even if it does take a year or two to come out.

DLC doesn't usually add much and most of it is so small it should of been in the original game.

People want expansion packs, thats why season passes are more accepted than horse armor.

Nope, I'm no more receptive of DLC now than when it was first introduced. The only thing that has changed for me is that I almost never buy games at release and wait for the GOTY version instead.
