Ubisoft sales hit $1.5B, Ghost Recon 4 in Q1 '10

Shaun White sells 3M, HAWX hits 1M, new Wii sports franchise in Q4; Call of Juarez due by June, Splinter Cell Conviction coming by holiday '09.

Ubisoft continues to navigate the hostile global economic environment with aplomb. Reporting its full-year financial results today, the publisher said that revenues for the 12-month period ended March 31, 2009, reached €1.05 billion ($1.50 billion). The sales figure represents a healthy 14 percent (18.4 percent at constant exchange rates) climb over its previous fiscal year's €928 million ($1.3 billion) haul. Ubisoft also said that its cash position now stands at €155 million ($220 million).

Sam Fisher's coming…eventually.
Sam Fisher's coming…eventually.

Unfortunately, as is typical for the French publisher, Ubisoft did not reveal its take in profit for the period. However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot did indicate that the company's margins were among the best in the industry, saying in a statement, "In a highly competitive environment, Ubisoft reported full-year sales growth of 18 percent at constant exchange rates in 2008-09, as well as the second-best profitability among comparable companies in its industry."

Guillemot trumpeted a number of other wins for the publisher during the year. Sales for Ubisoft's Far Cry and Rayman Raving Rabbids franchises were up 50 percent during the period. The publisher's casual label also experienced significant growth, with Guillemot saying that the segment was up 40 percent on the strength of games for Nintendo's platforms. The executive also noted that Ubisoft hired 1,300 employees during the year, having opened up new studios in Kiev, Ukraine, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as making a number of acquisitions throughout the year.

While full-year sales were up, Ubisoft did see a dip in sales during its post-holiday quarter. For the January-March period, revenues slid 5.1 percent (2.3 percent at constant exchange rates) to €206 million ($292 million), a figure which fell in line with investor guidance. Top performers for the period included Tom Clancy's HAWX, which Ubisoft said achieved its 1 million shipped target, as well as "strong showings" from Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party and Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip for the Wii.

Ubisoft also laid out its financial targets for the coming fiscal year. Though the publisher expects to launch Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well as a number of casual games during its in-progress March-June quarter, Ubisoft said that revenues should dive 44 percent to €95 million ($134 million).

However, the publisher still projects to see some growth over its full fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, thanks to second-half sales that are projected to rise 23 percent year-over-year. In total, sales for the 12-month period are expected to hit €1.1 billion ($1.56 billion). The publisher expects to see earnings from its franchise games Assassin's Creed 2, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction, Rabbids Go Home, Red Steel 2, and Dawn of Discovery. Licensed games expected to launch during the period include James Cameron's Avatar, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Arthur and the Invisibles. first revealed back in January.

Tom Clancy fans were also excited by the specific calling out of Ghost Recon 4, due out during the first calendar quarter of 2010. The game was initially revealed simply as "a new Ghost Recon" title back in January, when its launch window was also set.

As part of a postearnings conference call, Guillemot confirmed that the Shaun White franchise has sold 3 million units across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, DS, and PC. "You can expect more Shaun White in the future," the executive said.

Guillemot also noted that the four-years-in-development Splinter Cell: Conviction will finally arrive for the Xbox 360 this holiday season, along with the recently teased Red Steel 2 and a new sports franchise for the Wii.

The executive also briefly touched upon the as-yet-announced new Ghost Recon game, saying that it should arrive during the company's January-March 2010 quarter. The publisher also expects to launch new franchises Ruse and I Am Alive during that same quarter.

Its no surprise Ubisoft is making bank... they got a hand in just about every possible genre on every system. Can they really continue another year shipping out a handful of pet owner simulation games?! I'm pretty sure nothing will stop'em  Red Steel 2 for the Wii is good to hear, but Splinter Cell:Conviction coming this year is fantastic. No more MGS, so worries in the Ubisoft camp ;)

I just can't get into the Splinter Cell games. I liked the first one, then bought and barely played the next two. I'm pumped about Assassin's 2 though...

mikees1, I really wouldnt use 'BIA Hells Highway' as a reference for not being interested in SC, ultimately this is Ubisoft, who dont exactly make **** games. I reckon it'll be worth the wait.

@thenephariouson I think Assassins Creed's tech was like a test run for Splinter Cell, because I remember when it was first reported in Game Informer alot of the stuff that was in Assassins Creed was said to be in Splinter Cell. But then Assassins Creed took off and became seemingly more viable than Splinter Cell.

well i wont be buying it! might have done if it had of come out when it was supposed to but due to the delay and subsequent weak game that was Brothers in Arms Hells Highway iv learnt my lesson. It looked absolutly stunning in the run up to its supposed release date then two yrs past and it finaly got released it looked dated and i think Splinter cell will have the same problem.

Does this mean Conviction's June 30th release date means nothing anymore? Lets hope it will actually be released this year. :D Glad to see Ubisoft doing so well.

I just really hope Ubi have implemented the dynamics of AC into SC: Conviction, what better way to evade capture than to blend into crowds, climb walls and simply have total FREEDOM of movement, not to mention being able to obtain weapons, etc. I cant wait for this, although i do miss the original Sam Fisher as Chaos Theory was without a doubt the best Stealth action game wherby you had freedom without being tied down to scripted set piece scenarios. I would also love to see a (Completely) new R6 game, however im sure GRAW 3 & BG&E2 will be exellent also.

i think ubisoft should have taken this game or premise and made it an original EP not a sequel to splinter cell... like a guy who was framed for a crime he didnt committ! no combat just escape and evasion

Meh, I own a 360 and I'm not too excited about SC:C. I want the old school sam fisher back, the one with the black suit and the trifocals, you all know what I mean. Not the rogue gone Fisher. He's a criminal now? Come on....

I don't know for sure but from what I remember reading is splinter cell is totally exclusive according to what ubisoft Said in 2006. But I could totally be wrong.

i strongly doubt that this splinter cell game will remain exclusive for long... all ubi games are cross platform... its probably why they are one of the few companies that actually turned a profit last year lol so ill be seeing this soon on ps3...

FFS wondered how long it would take before we get the blubbing, it may come to PS3 in time, who knows, however if it doesnt, just continue to laugh at us having to pay for online play, but just remember, this is one of the reasons why!

Bring Splinter Cell: Conviction to the PS3! If you agree with that, post a comment saying the exact same thing. I hope its not considered spam as its intention is more like a semi E-Petition thingy. Anyways, love us (PS3 Owners) Ubisoft!

Wayhey! about damn time! ive been waiting for an update to SC: Conviction for ages, i really hope its a return to form for Mr Fisher. I think Ubisoft are a fantastic Dev' and have no doubt this next installment will deliver. As for GRAW3 and AC 2, well bring-em on! : ) OMG, i forgot about 'Beyond Good & Evil 2', they really have their **** together! There are'nt many other devs that consistently release top quality games of this quantity. The only thing missing for me is an announcement for a new R6 game (and not Vegas 2.5) but a brand new return. On a final note, i reckon the SC delay was due to Ubi making AC, then thinking 'hang on a minute, these dynamics would be exellent in SC Conviction', therefore having to go back to the drawing board.

Can't wait for Splinter Cell:Conviction but if it's gonna take 'til the holidays to get here, I might as well buy Velvet Assassin to feed my stealth needs until it finally comes out.

Good work Ubisoft, no PS3 Splinter Cell, coz consoles were teasing pc gamers about Resident Evil 5 :D... So, all u have to do is just buy a 1000$ pc and play it, trust me, the game is worth that.heheh

Wonder why so quiet on the splinter cell news? Guess they figured the title already has its' fan base set and doesn't need to keep up the hype. I'm stoked about this game.

I hope that Ghost Recon 4 gets out of the damn city a little more. I liked it better when it was more about stealth than duck and shoot. Go back to original Ghost Recon style, just keep the sweet 3rd person view.
