Ubisoft planning to release games more frequently

Assassin's Creed and Far Cry publisher says its network of 26 studios and over 7,000 developers will allow company to ship major franchises more regularly.

Ubisoft is aiming to capitalize on its "major production capacity" and release major franchises more frequently. In prepared remarks as part of the company's latest earnings report, CEO Yves Guillemot said the firm will be able to achieve this thanks to its network of 26 studios and over 7,000 developers across the world.

No Caption Provided

"We believe that our major production capacity, strong of a network of 26 international studios and over 7,000 developers, now optimized with our lead and associate organization, will allow us to come with an enhanced pipeline of increasingly high quality franchises and new IPs," Guillemot said.

"We will be able to release our franchises more and more regularly, providing solid visibility on our future revenue and profitability streams," he added. "All that, combined with the online expertise and know-how that we have been growing steadily internally make us believe that we will benefit disproportionately from the arrival of the new generation and from the continued growth of the online market."

One of Ubisoft's biggest franchises is Assassin's Creed, which has seen a new entry hit store shelves every year since 2009. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag launches this October and its follow-up is already in production.

According to Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat, gamers want a new Assassin's Creed game every year.

Ubisoft's Just Dance franchise has been annualized since its inception in 2009. Just Dance 4 was the most recent entry in the series, launching last fall. It has shipped over 8.5 million units to date.

Some of Ubisoft's other major franchises, like Far Cry, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, and Rainbow Six, have in the past gone years without new installments.

For the most part, they do have good games. But it's stupid busniness decisions like this that ruin them.

Honestly, if they released smaller, cheaper titles like Blood Dragon I'd be down. Use the same engine and maybe some assets and use more creativity instead of just tackling everything with money. I mean, people play pixelart games on purpose. I'd prefer cheaper standalone titles to DLC, unless they try to pull that episodic crap and make you pay $100 for a full game. That way they can try to recoup their investment in new tech and give gamers a good deal in return. Down with the $60 game! And no way to $70!

How do you get more regular with 20hour+ games than annual?

Release 2 of them. Look at AC3 with Liberation on PS Vita. And there has been rumours about a new PS Vita AC game in the works.

Isn't this the approach that Capcom took a couple of years ago? Yeah, it worked out great for them.

Wow, clearly Ubisoft doesn't know the power of anticipation. Instead of waiting for years, seeing the new game and people going 'Yay finally, a new AC game!', we wait one year and go 'Oh look, another one' and I can't help but feel that this will destroy the franchise in the long run.

And what about quality? No offense, but it's just a lot easier to create more innovations in a sequel if you have more time to make them. Like you could have a big load of new gameplay in the next game. Instead we now get little tidbits of improvements every year, and that hurts the games.

So no, I don't want more games released more quickly. Take your time *for once*. So says the voice lost among the millions of sales.

@Scorpion1813 @akiwak 100% agree.

Also, ACIII trailers misinformed the masses. After that piece of shit performance that that "game" gave I don't think as many people will buy ACIV

Me and quite a few of my friends are planning on speaking with our wallets and are going to forego ACIV.

I really hope that this shit stops soon. It's killing the industry.

Was nothing learned from the rise and fall of Guitar Hero? Why do these companies not get get the message that flooding the market with any franchise is going to lead to consumer fatigue?

I think the yearly AC is not a smart move with the way it is done now as opposed to how it was done with Ezio's story. Instead of a new numbered release every year, like AC2 - AC3 - AC4, it gets a better response from the players when a new number is released every 3 years and extras like the one's done for AC2's protagonist (Brotherhood, Revelations) are released yearly. It seems like AC4 directly after AC3 resulted in a negative feedback because people thought it wouldn't be a good game or a leap game even though in its essence there is no difference.

Do I make any sense whatsoever?

With this article, maybe some people will understand the fact that Ubisoft making annual AC's doesn't automatically mean a poor quality game. There are so many teams working in parallel on every major Ubisoft project. For example, it has been confirmed that work on AC4 started 2 years ago, with 8 studios working on it. So the quality still remains.

As for the so-called poor quality of AC3, this is a matter of opinion.

One more thing: people saying they're getting "suffocated" with AC games. B*tch please! One franchise game per year is perfect. It's like watching a good TV series: you can't wait for the next season.

Like it or not, Ubisoft will rock this year with Splinter Cell, AC4 and of course WATCH DOGS!

@patlagik It is not perfect if the game mechanics don't change. Like it or not, ALL the Assassins Creed games are the same, with a fresh lick of paint, just like COD is. Tell me what really has changed from AC2 to AC3. You still can't even crouch! We are paying for something that can be modded, anyone can stick a fresh lick of paint on a game.

@residude @patlagik

Yeah, maybe AC3 wasn't the gane that everyone expected. You can't please everyone. It didn't meet my expectations either, but still, it was a good game.

And I think your comment is pretty disrespectful to all the people that worked on AC3. Have you watched the credits list ? I don;t think hundreds of people worked to put a "fresh lick of paint". I am not a game developer, but I know for a fact that making a game isn't easy. Easy is to seat on a chair and diss hard-working people....

@patlagik @residude I enjoyed the first couple hours of AC 3. And then it turned into the same uninteresting errand boy game that made me dislike Brotherhood and to a lesser extent Revelations (since it actually had some story content).

MORE regularly? I can't imagine they mean franchises like Assassin's Creed.

I played the crap out of each title in the franchise, but after AC3, I officially have AC fatigue.

I know they said next gen games would be easier to make (And harder to make, and more expensive to make, and cheaper to make...whatever crazy contradictory thing they feel like saying this week) But I was really bored with AC3...And haven't bought any other Ubisoft game since AC2...So if they feel like dumbing down all their products a la COD and Madden's yearly style...I guess my rarely spent $60 a game will go elsewhere...and I'll wait till they get reduced to $20 - $40 to maybe pick them up like most other games...I'm a very (cheap) picky gamer...

Enjoy.

@BelaidKL haha u know it wont be. It'll be AC, farcry, splintercell clones pumped out by rival studios (cos no1 can make a AAA game in 1 year) with differing production values. If there's one way to kill an IP stone dead and create resentment it's to pump them out like candy.

They see Activision whoring call of duty in to oblivion and just see the $$$ signs.

As soon as u give an IP to a group of people that didn't make it in the first place, the core ideals are changed, the game gets diluted and you are left with a much worse game because of it.

@AshTrai @BelaidKL Well they've already confirmed they're gonna announce a new IP and a sequel to another franchise soon (probably Prince Of Persia)... But if the split is 50/50 then it's not all bad.. We still need those sequels/prequels/spin-offs/re-boots to franchises we already like to exist.. I just don't wanna be sat here next year feeling annoyed at a Watch Dogs 2 2014 announcement
