Ubisoft dreaming of a Red Steel Christmas

Publisher confirms Paris studio's MotionPlus-compatible Wii sequel set for arrival this holiday season, says it's a game for the whole family.

Wii gamers can add katanas and hand cannons to their wish lists, given that Ubisoft announced today that Red Steel 2 is set to arrive on Nintendo's system this holiday season. As with the original, the sequel is being developed by Ubisoft Paris and will rely heavily on swordfighting and gunplay. Early shots of the game hinted at a possible Wild West theme, but the first official word says that it's "set in a desert-bound, high-tech metropolis."

A tale of shooting and cutting people designed for the whole family.

Ubisoft is hoping to improve on the original's control options; the publisher confirmed that Red Steel 2 would be "built from the ground up" to take advantage of the upcoming MotionPlus precision-enhancing controller add-on. For example, Ubisoft claims that the game will take into account factors such as the strength of a user's sword swing.

Although Red Steel 2 may feature more-realistic replication of the act of swinging a sword, don't expect any bloody, M-rated results. In a conference call with investors today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that Red Steel 2 is a game "designed to be sold to the entire family," hinting at another bloodless T-for-Teen game.

Hmm adults want some blood...teens want even more blood...but this game wont have blood, lol. Also seriously enough with the family stuff. We don't buy games so we can sit down as a whole family, that's what the mini games are for

Wow. You didn't learn from the past by making it a family game. If the game's called "Red Steel" there should actually be red steel. More like "Silver Steel 2"

Yeah i actually enjoyed the first game but I don't think I even actually comprehended the fact that theres more blood on the cover of the game than there is in the game itself.

Nice bias gamespot. Disrespecting a game before its made and embedding the first games review. Wasn't the dark knight rated pg13?

The lack of blood does not bother me. But, how is stabbing, slicing and shooting "for the entire family"?

I like my violent games to have a nice bloody payoff. There's nothing wrong with bloodless games though (I love RPGs which are mostly gore-less). The thing that bugs me is the phrase "to the entire family". I have nothing against family oriented games; I love sitting down with my family and playing a few rounds of Mario Kart on my Wii. Lately on the Wii though, that phrase seems like an excuse for actually shipping a good game. It seems like developers are trying so hard to cater to people that have never even played a game before or have played very few games that they've forgotten (or are ignoring) how to make an acceptable gameplay experience. I have nothing against casual gamers; they deserve an excellent game just as much as a hardcore gamer does. It just seems like "casual" and "family friendly" are becoming buzzwords for "suck". Here's hoping this is one of the upcoming Wii titles that changes things.

I hope this game isn't being designed specifically "for the whole family". I don't care if it hasn't blood but it must have hardcore gameplay. I'm not saying that I don't like family-friendly games but this is supposed to all about "shooting and cutting people". Attention: I'm not discriminating casuals.

A bloodless katana-shooter "for the whole family"... Way to ruin any chances this game had of improving on its broken sequel thanks to MotionPlus ...

What's the obsession with blood? Sure, games like Gears and L4D wouldn't be the same without it, but can we not have a few exceptions? Goldeneye had less blood than Red Steel and it's an amazing game! Also, bloodless does not a family title make. Every 20 seconds in Red Steel you hear "DIE, BASTARD!" I don't think that makes things very friendly.

"built from the ground-up" and "designed to be sold to the entire family" seem to be the new catch phrases for the Wii. 'T' is not 'for the whole family' and build from the ground up usually just means v1.0 and who ever gets anything right on v1.0? Thanks, but pass - if for no other reason than you have severe weak-sauce PR.
