Twitch Starts Banning Streamers Accused Of Sexual Abuse

The livestreaming service said "due diligence" will come to the accused Twitch accounts as quickly as possible.

Following the wave of recent accusations of sexual abuse against popular Twitch streamers last weekend, the livestreaming platform has begun banning some of these accounts.

According to a Kotaku report and corroborated by Twitter account StreamerBans, several prominent streamers--including IamSp00n, Wolv21, BlessRNG, DreadedCone, and WarwitchTV--have been banned this week. Each one of these streamers has been accused of sexual abuse and harassment, ranging from sending sexually explicit messages to known minors to physically taking advantage of women at gaming conventions. [Update: In what appears to be an unrelated action, Twitch has seemingly banned DrDisrepect.]

The bans come not long after Twitch issued a statement about plans to thoroughly investigate each allegation. "We are reviewing each case that has come to light as quickly as possible while ensuring appropriate due diligence as we assess these serious allegations," the statement read. "We've prioritized the most severe cases and will begin issuing permanent suspensions in line with our findings immediately."

Twitch also said it remains committed to making the platform a safe environment for communities to congregate. "We're also committed to continuing our efforts to make Twitch a safer environment with more tools to combat harassment and hate," the statement said. "We have work underway including a review of our Hateful Conduct and Harassment policies, enhanced offensive username detection, improvements to AutoMod and our Banned Words list, and other projects focused on reducing harassment and hateful conduct."

The games industry is continuing to see an ongoing #metoo movement. Several high-profile figures, such as former Assassin's Creed Valhalla creative director Ashraf Ismail and former Dying Light 2 writer Chris Avellone, have had multiple allegations levied against them. In both situations, the accused individual is no longer associated with the project or projects they were working on. Avellone has also had his contributions removed from the upcoming RPG Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2.

Ah I think I understand now, some person in head office agreed to ban anyone who was masochism or masogonistic.

But luckily some streamers fell into their lap. Ban hammer.

Maybe I should accuse everyone at Twitch of sexual harassment. By Twitch's logic the company will be shutdown by the end of the week...

The key word here is "accused" not "proven guilty" and therein lies the problem.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the #metoo movement has become a Witch Hunt. It's one thing to suspend, ban, fire, and blacklist someone who has been proven guilty of sexual misconduct pending an investigation based on the severity of the offense committed, but to do so based solely upon accusation is nothing short of textbook Virtue Signaling.

In fact, I think it's time that someone says this, it's sexism. Go on, try to tell me that automatically taking the word of a woman over a man isn't sexism, especially when said man's reputation, livelihood, and his entire future is at stake. Sorry, but sexism by definition is a door that swings both ways, gender discrimination. Funny how folks love to preach about equality these days, yet it's always followed up by hypocritical actions which aren't anything even vaguely resembling equality, they just turn the tables, making the victims into the victimizers, and thus proving themselves to be no better.

Unfortunately, the sad truth about all of these farcical social movements is that they don't really seek equality at all because they're always vengeful in nature. For all their talk of peace, liberty, and justice for all, they all lack the key ingredient necessary to obtain that which they claim to seek, forgiveness. Yes, one of the most difficult things anyone can ever do, especially when they've been terribly wronged. Forgiveness is a selfless act deeply rooted in love, it is the opposite of vengeance, which is rooted in hate, but all of these movements are entirely vindictive in nature because they openly, shamelessly, and hypocritically promote the same sort of persecution. It's a vicious cycle of attack and retaliation that will never end. Humanity cannot and will not change until we are all individually and as one able to forgive each other. Sadly, I do not believe that humanity is capable of this, as evidenced by these movements. Obviously it must be evident by now that everyone who is accused by the #metoo movement is going to be ruined as a result, ergo anyone who engages in it is vengeful, yet the accusations continue to roll in.

This is not justice. There is no judge, no jury, no hearing, no evidence, no order whatsoever. Just a verdict and a sentence of life in exile. It doesn't even matter if the accused is actually guilty or not, he will be punished immediately, and even if he is somehow able to prove his innocence, (which is highly unlikely considering that many of these accusations are anonymous without any solid details to refute) the stain on his reputation will remain. Is that what we're calling justice these days? Is that what we're calling equality, the ability to ruin one sexes entire life based on accusations with absolutely no accountability or repercussions for the accuser should their accusations be proven false?

No, it isn't, and you know it. So shame on all of you who support this. If you have a single trace of honesty, even a trace of conscience, then you will stop supporting this immediately and join me in denouncing the rampant hypocrisy of it all. If it isn't stopped soon, then it will have dire consequences because it's easy to see where this is going to lead if it is allowed to continue. I'm talking about a national if not global crisis in which courtship/coupling has become a virtual minefield in which men will actively avoid participation in romantic relationships because it just isn't worth the risks involved. Seriously, what man is going to be willing to risk his whole future knowing that all it takes to lose everything is one angry ex-girlfriend and an accusation? No man, that's who.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: But that's exactly the point. For years and years we've been thaught that rules and norms must be abbandoned because they are "oppressive" and these are the results - once you remove them, everything is arbitrary and it doesn't mean everyone is free, it means you can always find yourself on the wrong side of the fence. One they you can be good and respectable person, other day you can be removed from everything because someone invented that it's offensive to not call mosquitoes a person.

The more this happens, the more Mr. Pence appears prophetic.

it seems disingenuous to lump Ashraf Ismail's and Chris Avellone's allegations together

Ashraf is accused of having an affair(s), Chris is accused of much ickier stuff

It's a miracle they left this comment section open. I guess cancel culture is cool to talk about, but not anything to do with protests or #BLM

@OsirisEG: I was about to say this as well. Twitch better have received proof of these allegations before issuing these bans.
