Night Dive founder Steven Kick clarified to Eurogamer that the remaster is based on the PC version and not the Nintendo 64 port.

Kick also confirmed that the following improvements will be present in the remastered dinosaur-shooting romp:

  • Support for high resolutions and widescreen.
  • Improved gameplay and level design.
  • OpenGL for video backend to provide portability and support for vertical sync.
  • Dynamic lighting, bloom, FXAA, enhanced water effects, lights shafts and more.
  • Ability to freely rebind all keyboard, mouse, and gamepad inputs.
  • Steam Achievements.

Originally announced in August, the developer also said that it would be remastering Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. According to the studio, both of the remasters will feature "enhanced graphics and other improvements."

This isn't the first time the developer has remastered a classic game. Night Dive also enhanced the original System Shock, which was released back in September.

Turok Remastered launches on December 17 and will be available on Steam, GOG, and the Humble Store.

New screenshots of the remastered game were released last week. And after announcing that Night Dive Studios acquired the rights to the System Shock franchise, it's been revealed that System Shock 3 is in the works.

What a waste of time and resources. You could have emulated the N64 version and got the same result.

@Speranza318: N64 version looked and played like shit. Not to mention the tank controls made it difficult to play. You're a dumbass, bud.

60 FPS and widescreen support with higher detail and much better and overall experience? I'll take that any day over something that was honestly rushed and barely playable. Even the devs confessed it was rushed.

@Uncommondoor: lmao the N64 version did not have tank controls. They were unique, yes, but they were not tankl controls. You just suck with them. You are probably one of those mouth breathing modern gamer casuals that suck on the original Resident Evil games.

@SgtStrungOut: In my defense, it's been several years since I've played it.
And I enjoyed the original RE games. CV is my favorite and I play it a few times a year. I'm even considering a world record speed run attempt.

No need to be rude.

@Uncommondoor: Tank controls? Who bitches about tank controls? Not a RE fan. I sped run all the old RE games, but I won't bitch about controls.

@Speranza318: I was going to say wtf you talking about. This is a remake. But I only read it. Then I seen the video. Lets just say it probably would have been better to just not say anything, and not show what I was thinking.

This is shameful. Not one thing I see remastered about this. I actually liked this game too though.

I'd say this is a good example of how remastering isn't enough. It needs a complete rebuild from the ground up. Maybe someday we'll get a decent modern Turok game, it's overdue.

The N64 version was the port? I think you mean the PC version was and both it and the sequel were notoriously awful in that format, particularly the music quality. I really enjoyed this game back in the day and so having the chance to play it in a mouse-keyboard setup, without having to mangle my hands on the old N64 controller, means I will likely give this a shot. That said, the only real difference I could see was the light/shadow effect on that giant dragonfly, but it looks like the crappy draw distance hasn't really changed (The reason why they never included snipers & iron-sights). Comparing this with what they managed on System Shock, it makes you wonder how, or why, they couldn't do more with it. Paying more that a tenner for this would be daylight robbery.

@odolwa99: Screw iron sights. That is some Call of Duty crap. This is a fast paced skill based retro shooter that requires you to know how to aim, not rely on iron sights to make it easier to aim for you noobs.

@SgtStrungOut: You must have trouble reading. I own and enjoy the original game and am looking forward to trying this one out, but the game 'was' critically panned because of it's awful draw distance which 'did' prevent the inclusion of certain weapon classes. That's not opinion, it's fact.

I have to see how this looks because the screen shots that i saw a week or 2 ago look awful. I'm hoping to see a real graphical improvement over the old one and something that carry today graphics and not a minor paint job and call it remastered.

A little resolution hack and lazy post-process effects won't count as a remastered game for me. Work on the models, the textures, the environment clutter, increase enemy count, improve AI, do something.......... not just a lazy tech job any modder can do.

@DragonessAthena: lol i used to get all of their games for free as i worked for the distribution company. It was pretty cool to get an average of 50 PC games a month for free :) . Even if some were crap.

All i had to do was give things a quick review or nod of approval and i could keep the discs.

Still have most of them.

Meh, compared to Brutal Doom this is not exciting. They should have upped the gore and got rid of those horrendous background textures (I mean just look at those mountains lol).

That shotgun pewing pink smoke, imao :)

@Sushiglutton: Brutal Doom isn't old. The mod started development in 2010. And they are completely different games. Brutal Doom and Turok are allowed to exist at the same time.

@ughz: Doom is old. Brutal Doom is a remaster of sorts. Doom and Turok are not completely different games, they are in the same main genre.

Bottom line is that there's nothing exciting about this remaster which is a shame since it's possible to make something cool out of old FPS games if you have the right ideas.

Considering my N64 console is aging horribly, I'm totally down for this remaster on PC but however, Seeds of Evil is the one I want to the most cause it's still the best Turok game to date. The only Turok game I have yet to play is the Xbox 360 version.

@davillain-: Ehhh. Turok 2 had better graphics and was more organized but the levels were smaller and the game was shorter. And you couldn't knock the entire forest over with chronosceptor and send all the aliens flying into the air. It also didn't have as flavorful bosses.

And it had some additional badass weapons like razorwind and cerebral bore.

I hope the remaster gets rid of all the GD'd fog in the game. Today, including dynamic fog effects is an impressive graphical tech, but at the time, the fog was used to hide the N64's poor draw distance and avoid pop-in. This resulted in Turok only being able to see about 20-30 feet in front of him, resulting in raptors and other dinosaurs suddenly appearing from the fog. That's what made the game challenging, but the graphical limitations were really annoying.

@reavern: In N64 defense, I was cool with it at the time since N64 was still brand new but the fog made sense and hey, I was young so I didn't understand why until I got older and wiser lol. Still though, good game, wish Acclaims was back to be honest.
