Trade Your Violent Games in for Ice Cream in California

In Marin County next month, people can trade in their violent games in exchange for Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

People in northern California's Marin County will soon have the option of either trading their violent video games in at GameStop for cash, or to the county itself for...ice cream. The Marin County Independent Journal reports that district attorney Ed Berberian is launching a new buyback program where people can turn in toy guns and violent video games in exchange for delicious Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

Berberian, who held a similar buyback program last year for firearms, is partnering with the Center for Domestic Peace and Vermont-based ice cream purveyor Ben & Jerry's for the campaign. On Saturdays in October, anyone can turn in toy guns and violent video games at various Marin County locations to receive their free ice cream (though we don't know what flavor(s) will be offered or how many scoops you'll get). A full list of buyback locations is available here.

Sorry, we don't know if this flavor will be offered
Sorry, we don't know if this flavor will be offered

Center for Domestic Peace development and community relations manager, Marla Hedlund, said the buyback program is an effort to "inspire people to become part of the movement to creative peace in a violence-free environment."

For his part, Berberian said getting rid of toy guns and violent video games could have a major impact on a child's development. Decreasing a person's exposure to violent video games could "alter how one later addresses conflict situations," he said.

There was no mention in the report about how Marin County will determine if a video game is "violent," but M-rated games are likely going to be targeted. It also is unclear what Marin County will do with the games and toy guns it collects.

A handful of prominent game developers are either based in Marin County or have an office there, including Telltale Games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us), 2K Marin (BioShock), Visual Concepts (NBA 2K series), and Deep Silver (Saints Row, Dead Island).

Marin County is not the first to take aim at violent video games for such a buyback program. Last year, a town just outside of Boston offered coupons to people who gave away their violent games (and movies and toys). Before that, in response to the Sandy Hook shooting, a Connecticut town announced plans to collect and destroy violent video games. However, the town scrapped these plans in the 11th hour.

The effect violent video games have on gamers has been divisively debated. Some claim there is a definite link between playing violent games and increased levels of aggression, while others, including a former FBI profiler, argue that games do not cause violence. It's also interesting to note that it was California's own violent video game bill that ended up being struck down in the Supreme Court.

I'm a free-spirited, jam-band loving hippie who also happens to be an arguably hardcore gamer. I have enjoyed many-a-violent game in my day, even the original Mortal Kombat and MK2 as a kid and have never participated in an act of violence in my life. Perhaps this is the exception and not the rule, but the most violent people in America and the world probably have much sicker priorities of actual savagery than to resort to virtual violence. How many hours a day do you think the purveyors of atrocity in the middle-east devote to playing video games? Zero. Berberian is a Barbarian!

The 11th Hour! That was a completely underrated game... it did take a million CD's though... you could scrap a lot of things while you are trying to load the 11th hour. :-\

Or you could just sell the games and buy more ice cream than they would give you.

I'd probably trade in some of my stupider games just to get some Ice cream. Hope they got Rocky Road.

Ice cream technically isn't equivalent to diabetes. Lack of self regulation and exercise do however when coupled with certain genetic predispositions. I'm not entirely sure how this is supposed to appeal to the demographic that plays violent video games because ice cream may provide instant gratification but as people noted games can provide gratification over a long period of time especially those violent games with a multiplayer emphasis. However the article did mention that you can also trade in the games for good ol' money which effectively makes this like any other trade in program. I see no reason for anyone here to be upset about this since not all of us live in Cali but for all the people who DO live there chances are you now have another choice when considering trade ins which is great if say you don't like to do business with the likes of EB/Gamestop and etc... Evidently the people behind this program are never going to accept that the rash of obscene and unfortunate events in recent memory are the result of disturbed individuals using violence as a means to vent. Furthermore that these people for all their obscene actions were essentially not well and needed help they never got. Why not say use the funds from the violent video games to build recreational centers for kids and fund after school events or a mental wellness center? You could make for much better PR with that kind of campaign as compared to pawning people off with ice cream... At least such a campaign would have a lasting impact I mean what are you going to do? Keep running this program indefinitely? At least the wellness center could generate some revenue with hosting events and the like. Hell you might not even have to build a whole new building to do it either... Try repurposing some of the buildings that are of no use (every city/state has em).

This is bizarre. Who will define the concept of violence here? Can Knack be violent because the gameplay is based on punching, kicking, etc.?

There're already studies that show that violent games have no direct statistical correlation to any increase in crimes. In fact, crime rates have been decreasing while the gamer population has increased.

Find the nearest flee market / yard sale -> buy bunch of cheap games that have a gruesome box art -> Place your goodies into a box and write "Tommy stuff hand of!" on the side -> Go to the ice cream place and tell them that you "confiscated" these from your little cousin Tommy and he's going to need a whole lot of ice cream to cool of that homicidal nature of his. :9

Ok .. Ben and Jerry's is off my list... what you think violent video games are worse than the fatty sugar milk you sell? I'm sure Ice Cream and the like have killed way more than video games.

My question is, what constitutes a violent game? An ESRB of Teen or higher? Maybe the content descriptors? Could I get away with NHL 09? Also, I have an old Casino DVD that doesn't work. Maybe I could get a bonus...

That better be some expensive ice cream for it to have the same value as a brand new violent video game. Just stick with your toy guns.

$60 worth of ice cream better actually be $60 worth of ice cream, not just a couple scoops. More like 100 scoops.

Turn in something that has no conclusive evidence to being linked to a large portion of gun violence for something that is guaranteed to make you obese if not taken in moderation. It's only American to do so people!

So we are back at this point again?

Video games kill people apparently., not the people with the guns. Why would you trade in your games and get some food in return?

How is it that people are being paid by tax payer dollars to spend time on stupid BS like this. How insulting. This is a perfect example of why California is broke, why politicians there make obscene amounts of money, and why so many businesses have left the state over the past 10 years.

I'm going to take a stab that these same government workers will be picking through some of these games to take home to their own kids.

How about they spend time finding and locking up real criminals? Like politicians who waste taxpayer money on this kind of thing...

Humans are naturally violent. If we stopped exorcising those violent tendencies through positive mediums like video games and art, we'd probably just become repressed and more violent. I personally prefer simulated violence to real violence, but that's just me.
