The Total War countdown site that surfaced recently has reached its end, revealing the new game it was teasing as Total War: Warhammer II.

Warhammer II introduces four new playable races: High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and a fourth one still to be announced. It also takes players to "mystery-shrouded continents far to the west of The Old World," spanning Ulthuan, Naggaroth, The Southlands, and Lustria. It's that last one that some fans believed the countdown site was teasing, leading them to believe the announcement would be for a new Warhammer game.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Total War: Warhammer 2 Announced

While still promising to offer the classic Total War style of gameplay, Sega and Creative Assembly claim Warhammer II features a "new style of narrative campaign." Each of the four races is competing to either save or destroy the Great Vortex over Ulthuan, and you'll have to rush to do so before anyone else can. This "struggle culminat[es] in a cataclysmic endgame."

The new campaign is said to offer hundreds of hours of gameplay. If you own both this game and its predecessor, a free update coming "shortly" after launch will provide Warhammer II with a combined campaign map that consists of the regions from both games. This will let you play through campaigns with any playable race you own.

Warhammer II does not yet have a specific release date, but it's due out sometime before the end of 2017. A third game is also expected in the future, as this series has been announced as a trilogy.
