The open beta for Creative Assembly's upcoming free-to-play strategy game Total War Battles: Kingdom is now available on PC. You can download the game right now through Steam

Total War Battles: Kingdom, which was announced in December 2014, is described as a "persistent world strategy game." It's set during the turn of the 10th century, as mankind emerges from the Dark Ages.

Overall, the game aims to offer "rich, bite-sized Total War experiences." Watch the trailer above to see more of the PC game and how it works.

Previously, Total War Battles: Kingdom was available on PC through a limited closed beta. A Mac version of the game, along with a tablet edition, will launch later this year, though exact release dates have not been announced.

Creative Assembly's goal for Total War Battles: Kingdom is to allow you to play Total War wherever you are. "With one persistent world, players will be able to continue their campaign across multiple devices, at home, work, or out and about," the developer said.

Looks like your standard mobile game. "Build, train armies, collect resources, wait for hours, repeat! Or...y'know, pay real money for stuff."

I'll give it a shot, because I love Total War, but my hopes aren't high, because there are about a billion of these games on mobile and they're literally the exact same thing and they're all terrible.

as a design concept, this is great. as a F2P game under the Sega umbrella, i'm more than a bit skeptical.

DAMMIT CA WHY DID YOU SIGN WITH SEGA??????

@pboontap: I was about to say the same thing. Two of the best RTS makers (CA & Relic) right now are signed with SEGA. DLC is their current business model. Look at what they did with the skins and commanders in Company of Heroes 2.

@oflow@pboontap: CA broke my heart with Empire and caused me to never ever use steam again. I had actually bought the disc in a store (gasp) and when i tried to play the bug filled mess at a friends house with no internet, i get a lil alert saying steam said "NO". never again with any of that horseshit. the crying shame of it is that Medieval 2 is prolly my favorite game of all time and Rome 1 as my third.

The reason i bring all this up is I seem to remember CA announcing the selling of their soul to Sega around the time Empire came out. Before it was just a publishing deal, at least i think. Watching Rome 2 get released was deja vu of Empire.

The only thing persistent about it is that it's persistently crappy.

Well this looks like an incredibly well crafted, and originally bland, piece of crap.

The only reason anyone would want to play this on PC when, sitting next to it in their Steam library is an(or several) ACTUAL Total War game(s) is to beta test it. This is clearly a mobile and casual focused game.

But hey, at least they put a lot of effort into the visuals compared to the outrageously hideous games that saturate the genre.

@spikepigeo: that is probably pretty historically accurate as a matter of fact. bras back then consisted of a tight wrapping of fabric, and given the fact that babymaking was a noble (and common) ladies main action item, she is probably nursing.
