Total War Battles: Kingdom Announced

It's a free-to-play, "persistent-world strategy game" from Creative Assembly.

London-based developer Creative Assembly has announced Total War Battles: Kingdom, a free-to-play, "persistent-world strategy game," due out "soon" for mobile devices and PC. Set during the turn of the 10th century, Kingdom combines realm-building and tactical battles, according to publisher Sega.

"Ultimately, players will be able to join in massed multiplayer wars against other lords in a fight for the throne," reads a line from the game's description. "Deception, spying, and outright betrayal against enemies and friends alike will see the devious player rewarded."

Creative Assembly's Renaud Charpentier said Kingdom benefits from the developer's learnings on Total War Battles: Shogun, the spinoff released in 2012. Charpentier says Kingdom was designed to be accomodating to players wherever they are.

"Whether that's on the move or at work over lunch," he said. "It shouldn't matter where you want to play; we want to make it easy to come back again and again to your flourishing Kingdom. Then, we ramp up the complexity and challenge, adding more options to your Machiavellian schemes."

Kingdom will be available soon via a closed beta on PC. You can register for the beta at the game's website today. For more on Kingdom, check out the trailer above.

In addition to Kingdom, Creative Assembly is working on Total War: Attila and Total War Arena. The studio's most recently released game was Alien: Isolation.

Okay, did Games Workshop pull the plug on the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Total War game? Cuz the last thing we heard about it was its announcement.

it's actually pretty for a mobile device game. and i wanted to design my city for a change. i've grown weary of construction qeues in total war. and it's multiplayer. i'm tired of AIs who keep routing at the mere threat of envelopment or mere death of its general. Yep the AI has become too much predictable. I don't know I found Total War combat most enjoyable with the first in the series. I think the terrain then was more useful. The series only looked better and better through the years, but the gameplay and AI hasn't evolved for the better.

I always wanted a multiplayer version of the strategy part in Total War: you know, building and capping territories. Unless I'm mistaken, multiplayer was always restricted to setpiece battles.

This game reminds me of the Castles game in the 90s, also Realms and Lord of the Realms, The few things I noticed with this new game though: like straightforward battle formations. I still would like fluid formations, flanking attacks, hidden attacks like indirect fire behind hills and clumps of trees. And the battlefield here is plainly flat. I need the use of hills, trees, swamps, ruins, house to house fighting even.

One more thing, in Total War I don't have much use for the graphics anymore coz with my desire to control battles, I always use an encompassing high field of view.

I kind of...feel offended by this... cant explain it, thats just how I feel after watching the video.

Also known as free-to-play but pay-to-win just like every other online "free" war game in this mold.

The Total War franchise has established itself as a deep strategic/tactical game, all about the decision you make on the world map and the tactical decision you make on the battlefield with different types of terrain, weather and MASSIVE ARMIES with varied types of units. If you ask me, and from what you can grasp from this presentation, this game is not for hardcore or regular Total War gamers, those who have played Shogun, Medieval, Medieval II, Rome and Shogun 2 Total War.

Maybe the target market for this game is not those fans of Total War games, but the casual gamer who is more concerned on what platform he/she plays rather than what they play. This is how you bring a franchise down, in my opinion.

It matters where I want to play, I build up powerful PCs because I want to play Total War in its full glory with all the bells and whistles. Spare me muddy tablet graphics!

Blah, they hit their high point with Medieval 2. The modding scene is by far the best thing about this franchise. Meanwhile even though Rome 2 has had its worst bugs fixed, it still suffers from flawed design decisions, and now F2P and a rehash of Barbarian Invasion? Can't they at least make a game about China or the Middle East? There's LOTS of material to work with there...

f2p sucks. it means 3 day build times with microtransactions to speed up the play. I've seen tons of these type of games and quit them all.

Avatar image for sirchick

Free to play so its going to suck ass.

Avatar image for off3nc3

Enjoy the f2p cash grab lulz

You get what you pay for.

F2P Total War game...? What a nightmare. Pass.

<< LINK REMOVED >> YOu havent even played the game yet idiot.

And in a persistent world, which I don't even think it's true.

Avatar image for Gelugon_baat

*Ugh*, "free-to-play". :(

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

Free to play? Right into the trash can.

Avatar image for drysprocket

It's always a great sign when a 5 minute promo video says nothing about how the payment model works. I'm sure it'll be fine........

So much no.

Avatar image for g_vakarian

May Total War RIP. At the rate games are being ruined by online and multiplayer crap I will soon have nothing to play but more money in my wallet.

Avatar image for fredgwatkin

Hey CA, here's a suggestion for you. How about instead of paying 20 people to make this crud, you bring in one genius who can make the AI in the actual TW series really fun to play against?

Avatar image for ghost140

CA...just another in a long list of devs trying to get a piece of the F2P pie.

Avatar image for DarkJedi8_basic

Now, I don't want to say this is Clash of Clans...but this is Clash of Clans.

Avatar image for ezioismyname

Another Clash of Clans rip off

Avatar image for catsimboy

What a terrible name for what will most likely be a terrible game.

Avatar image for TalesOfGod

I don't care if this is rude but no one wants this crap!

Why would you even waste your time on another F2P game like this when they all are mediocre at best?

Ugh. This industry (and the consumers who actually encourage this idiocy) are sickening.

Avatar image for oflow

Becuz all the research and focus group keep telling them that mobile gaming is the future and gives huge ROI.

I miss the days when devs and publishers used how fun a game was as the key selling point rather than marketing And research BS

"Deception, spying, and outright betrayal"

It seems like CA does this to their customers every time they release a new Total War game.

Avatar image for Lu_Shen

A Total War pay-to-win game? What has happened to this series?

Avatar image for Stevo_the_gamer

<< LINK REMOVED >> Just ignore it. TW Attila will be fine.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Just like Total War Rome 2 was totally fine on release (even though it had the biggest budget than any of the previous games).

This series is going to Hell with CA's addiction to throwing DLC in their games and their trademark horrible releases.

Avatar image for Ultramarinus

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Emperor Edition is the best game ever released by CA, saying this as a series' fan that played everything since Shogun 1 for a combined thousands of hours. People who play early access stuff for years couldn't even wait for some patches to see it done right.

"Deception, spying, and outright betrayal against enemies and friends alike will see the devious player rewarded."

In real life that only works until everyone else figures out you're a lying s#!+. Then they'll gang up on you to remove the cancer. Ask Der Führer .

How far the Total War series has fallen indeed...

Avatar image for PETERAKO

Yet another beloved franchise falls in to the blazing pits of F2P hell. No amount of PR directed dev interviews will change my mind. This looks awful.

It has always been like that. Shaky release, low sales, KAPOW, F2P.

Goodbye mech warrior, goodbye silent hunter, goodbye flight simulator.

Avatar image for semi74

It´s a free to play castel building game. How original of them. This one is gonna sell like cupcakes in hell.

Avatar image for ggregd

<< LINK REMOVED >> People in Hell would probably enjoy a nice cupcake.

Avatar image for TalesOfGod

The cupcake is full of cups. Not cake.

Glass cups.
