This shouldn't come as a surprise, given that Madden NFL 16 topped charts in August, despite being released late in the month. Speaking about the successful launch of NBA 2K16, NPD's Liam Callahan said, "Adjusting for days on the market, NBA 2K16 had the best launch month of all-time for any NBA 2K title. In fact, for 8th generation software, NBA 2K16 had the best launch month ever for any Sports Game."
Overall, four out of the top ten best-selling games of September in the US were sports games; see the full list below which includes collector's editions, GOTY editions, and bundles, but not games bundled with hardware.

"Thanks to the seven new sports releases launched in September 2015, the Sports super genre accounted for 32 percent of units and 39 percent of revenue for the month," Callahan said.
The top four most sold games saw stronger sales on the PS4, and Sony Computer Entertainment America released the following statement:
"As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September. PlayStation 4 was the number one console for NBA 2K16, Madden NFL 16, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and FIFA 16. Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for Destiny: The Taken King."
Compared to last month, Minecraft dropped several places from its second place position while Gears of War: Ultimate Edition failed to make the top ten at all. Year-on-year, video game software sales only dropped three percent, despite having to compete with last year's launch of Destiny and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
In related NPD news, the PS4 has once again topped charts as the best-selling console for the month in the United States.
