Top Ten Best-Selling Games in the US for February 2016

Far Cry Primal puts an end to Call of Duty's run.

What games sold the best in February 2016 at retail in the United States? Now we know, as the NPD Group today released its sales report for the month, confirming that Far Cry Primal came out on top. It pushes Call of Duty: Black Ops III to the No. 2 spot, marking the first time since its launch in November that it was not the best-selling game.

Rounding out the top five were Grand Theft Auto V, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, and NBA 2K16. The full Top 10 sales chart for February 2016 is available at the bottom of this post.

In a statement, NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said Primal enjoyed stronger sales than Far Cry 4 did in 2014 when adjusted for the number of days the games were available within their respective release months. Importantly, however, the NPD Group only tracks physical sales--and digital is on the rise.

Callahan also noted that, had all of Fire Emblem Fates versions been counted (Birthright, Conquest, and the special edition), the game overall would have ranked third for new software sales.

"The combined first month sales of Fire Emblem Fates would more than triple the first month sales of the next-highest game within the franchise, Fire Emblem: Awakening," he explained.

In its own statement, Nintendo revealed that both versions of Fire Emblem Fates sold nearly 400,000 copies combined (physical and digital), outpacing the previous series' record-holder, Fire Emblem: Awakening. That number should continue to rise with Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, which releases today.

Overall software sales for the month declined 11 percent to $309.5 million. This downturn was attributed in part to a "sharp recline" in Xbox 360/PS3 generation game sales.

"Despite the success of some February 2016 new launches relative to their predecessors, collectively, new launches sold 4 percent less dollars and 12 percent fewer units than those of February 2015," Callahan said.

"New physical software trends suffered due to a sharp decline in seventh generation consoles of 52 percent despite the 14 percent or $28 million growth in eighth generation software," he added. "Portable software also had a drop of 30 percent due to a poor comparison to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, which coincided with the launch of the new 3DS."

On the hardware side, Sony's PlayStation 4 came out on top, though overall new sales across the industry declined.

  1. Far Cry Primal (PS4, Xbox One)

Glad to see a half baked game like sf5 did not do that well. Maybe there is a bit of hope that gamers are a bit more careful before they buy unfinished games.

@Gomtor: I'll get Street Fight 5 once they update it and we get the rest of the game. I will not support it as it is now.

Amazing that a game that came out in 2013 is #3 on the list...

@Sgt-Damain: I always say that, don't think GTAV has been out any top 10 since launch.

@kyelo: I read that they have sold 60 million copies so far, WTF? Can it be officially called the most over rated game in history?

It's not a bad game, I'm just getting around to playing it now, I'm almost done. But a perfect 10 game, with 60 million units sold? No, I don't get it.

Good for Rockstar though. At least they don't try to milk everyone with annualized Ubisoft bullshit, every year...

Really stoked about the success of Fire Emblem. I was worried about the franchise as a whole, being that Awakening essentially saved it from being retired, but it's stronger than ever now, which is very exciting!

I like how a copy and paste Far Cry game overtook a derivative shooter franchise. We truly are in the age of unoriginal mainstream. No wonder I've been playing so many indie games lately.

Still no Rise of the Tomb Raider. Isn't it out on PC now? It still can't make the list?

@Lacerz: PC retail copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider have been literally killed by Square Enix already. Amazon UK doesn't sell them in the first party, and in the United States there's no release of a PC copy except for the Collector's Edition, which, by the way, in the US doesn't come with a disc inside. You can see how ironic this is. PC gaming is mostly dead in physical retail.

7 out of ten sold most on the PS4. One of those, a PS4 exclusive, ranks among 9 mulitplats, even though it's only been out a few weeks. The steamroller rolls on.

How the hell can GTA V still be selling so well?

Just had a look and it is actually the fourth best selling game of all time. Only got Minecraft, Wii Sports and Tetris above it.

@ButDuuude: Not according to the Wikipedia best selling games page. The references they quote a pretty decent.

GTA V has about 60 million, Minecraft had 72 million, Wii Sports is at 83 million but only because they shipped it free with the Wii console. Then Tetris piling some unreal number like 400 million.

Super Mario Bros is fifth on the list under GTA V at 40 million.

@dexda: I'm guessing there are a few (maybe hundreds of thousands) slack arses out there like me. I didn't buy it for the 360 on the better than even chance it might come to the next gen once the consoles were released. I purchased a PS4 at Xmas, and picked GTA V last month, a bit slow to start with but now all 3 characters are unlocked, let the good times roll. It's a cracking game. Also looking forward to trying Online once offline is done.

@dexda: The fact that it is one of the best games ever made and that GTA Online is frequently supported with free content updates might be why.

@brn-dn: Yeah but I just can't see where the numbers are coming from for it to reach third best seller in a month. Surely most people who wanted it must have bought it by now.

Almost like people are buying multiple copies or something.

Probably because of that low score GameSpot allowed..

@brn-dn: I doubt it was the good score that gamespot gave it to make it not be in the top 10. I'm willing to bet the games fan base is not as big as say far cry, Gta, Lego, call or duty, or street fighter. The game was only out for 6 days too.
