Now Playing: Netflix: The Best New Movies / TV Shows To Watch In May 2018

Back in January 2016, legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that he had been talking to Tom Cruise about a potential sequel to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. More than two years later, it has been confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick has started shooting ahead of its July 2019 release.

The news comes via Cruise himself, who celebrated day one of the movie's production with a new tweet. It shows Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, looking out across a runway at his F-14A Tomcat, with one of the original movie's famous catchphrases pasted on top. Check it out below:

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on the 2014 sci-fi movie Oblivion. This won't be the first time Kosinski has brought a popular '80s movie property back to the big screen either; he also directed the Tron reboot Tron Legacy in 2010. No other casting news has been revealed yet, but expect some names to be announced in the coming weeks.

The Top Gun sequel was in development for many years. In 2015 it was confirmed by David Ellison, chief executive of production company Skydance, that a script was being worked on, and he gave a few hints about what to expect.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," he said, as reported by Collider. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is, I don’t think, what people are going to expect."

Top Gun was released in May 1986. It went on become the highest grossing film of that year, earning $353 million worldwide from a budget of just $15 million. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12, 2019.

They should replace Goose with The Penguin...from Batman...as the actual Penguin character

Sounds cool. Wonder if they're going to bring back Val Kilmer as well? He's been off the radar for so long, I wonder if he's even in the business still.

@EliOli: The guy was a little too goofy the last time they showed him off camera. He wa also not in good shape

The timing just makes it weird. How far after the events of the original Top gun does this take place. Will it pick up right after so they have to try and make Tom not look like he is 30 years older. (luckily he aged pretty well) Will it be current making him the Top gun instructor and there is some kid that reminds him of himself. Did he help raise Goose's child because he knows its his fault what happened? Will Meg Ryan make a return as like some drugged out sad widow. What about Ice man, I dont even know where tf Val Kilmer has been. I do know he has not aged as well as Cruise, they may have to call him Ice Cream Man, and the chick who played Mavericks girl forget about it, hopping back on that motor cycle may just take her breath away.

@craigtl: I'd say he will be instructor, and one of his cadets will get into some kind of trouble and Cruise will have to go save the day. He will fly a jet for sure. With Cruise, it's "all eyes on me" or bust.

@craigtl: I suspect it might be about a new hotshot aviator who journeys to a remote island carrying an old-school helmet, where he finds an elderly washed-up naval instructor standing by the cliff side. The old instructor pulls down the hood of his rain coat and stares in amazement as the young pilot hands over the helmet.

Next scene the instructor picks up the helmet, and tosses it over the cliff.

Masterpiece.

@craigtl: Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s essentially going to be what Viper was in the original and be a Top Gun instructor this time around.

That's an F-18 in the teaser photo, which makes sense since F-14s have been retired.

@pg1: The author seems to think its the F-14, but they look bulkier from the front angle. It brings up the question of the movie's setting. Will it be set in the current year or will they somehow try and pull off picking up shortly after the original.

Watched the 3D conversion of Top Gun recently with the lights down and the surround sound up. Personal opinion...it holds up very well and they did a fantastic job with the 3D conversion. It's time to buzz the tower.

Oblivion and Tron were both gorgeous, ambitious films, and even though they were both ultimately a little "thin" they each had many fun concepts. Hopefully he can apply some of that here.

@Pyrosa: the cold almost still look of those films wont work with top gun though... hope kosinski has some more intimate visuals planned

I hope the movie will have a great soundtrack like the original and some cool visual. They should shoot it in IMAX. There ain't a lot a movie about fighters jet so I hope they use all the new fx tech to make it look impressive.
