Now Playing: Super Mario Odyssey Video Review

Last week was huge for the video game release calendar, with Super Mario Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Origins, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus all coming out on the same day. And it was Ubisoft's historic open-world game that won the battle to be No.1 in the UK's physical sales charts for the week ending October 28.

Below that, Super Mario Odyssey claims the No.2 spot. Sales monitor Chart-Track says the Mario title is the Switch's biggest launch yet, "comfortably beating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." The tracker also states Odyssey's first week was "considerably" bigger than any Wii U game's debut week and that it earned Nintendo its sixth-biggest launch ever in the UK.

Finally, the week's other big new game, Wolfenstein II, debuts at No.4, with FIFA 18 beating it to the final podium position. Last week's No.1, Gran Turismo Sport, slips to No.5, while Destiny 2's PC launch last week helps Bungie's shooter to No.7.

Assassin's Creed Origins coming top is not hugely surprising, given the series is traditionally hugely successful, and unlike Super Mario Odyssey, it's available on multiple platforms. It was also buoyed by a positive critical reception, including a 7/10 in our Assassin's Creed Origins review. Our Wolfenstein II review, meanwhile, awarded Bethesda's shooter a 9/10.

However, it was Nintendo's latest Switch exclusive that gained the biggest plaudits, including a 10/10 in our verdict. "Odyssey is sustained beyond its major milestones not only through colorful worlds and hidden challenges, but through the sheer joy of controlling Mario, who's never felt more responsive or dynamic in action," wrote GameSpot critic Peter Brown. "Even with everything new that's been introduced, Nintendo's forward-thinking platformer retains the series' classic handcrafted appeal, which is even more impressive when you realize how densely packed each kingdom is. Mario's latest outing is big, bold, and bursting with new ideas, and like Breath of the Wild, is another instance of Nintendo going above and beyond to redefine our expectations. It's a shining example of refined creativity, and another crown jewel for Switch that is without equal." Read our full Super Mario Odyssey review for more.

Why would anyone support a game where a Jew and a black supremacist goes around mass murdering white people? Glad its sales are down 50% Apparently half of people still have some decency, there is hope yet.

So sick of EVERY single Mario game being worshipped and having bias-based reviews simply because it is Mario.

Mostly single player games which is good but I can't stand to see a repetitive franchise like Assassin's Creed with microtransactions doing well. Sad.

Huge mistake wolfenstein being released with two juggernaut franchises. Its baffling to me how an experienced publisher make a mistake like that.

AC Origins, Mario Odyssey, and Wolfenstein 2 are all must haves if you don't own one

Yay,single player games sales! You all was wrong!

Or can it just be that no multiplayer games launched along them? 🤣🤣🤣

Mario was only a 5GB download, I think the sales were much higher, as digital was preferred by many.

@alistairbrogan: I'd also like to see the ration of people that own th system to purchases. I bet Mario would win.

AC Origins is GREAT! Ubisoft has this legendary series back on track after the last 2 disappointments.

@todddow: Syndicate wasn't bad, it was a solid AC episode and way better than Unity. Problem is, the latter was so bad and buggy, gamers punished Ubisoft buy not buying Syndicate, that's why they decided a 2-year break.

It's disappointing to see Wolfenstein beaten by freakin FIFA. Gamers need to put their money where their mouth is and support great single player games instead of the same crap they get every year.

Asscreed is Multiplat, so not surprising. Odyssey is incredible.

I really hope people get tired of "Ubisoft open world game #287" someday so we can move on from this tripe in the industry.

@Richardthe3rd: I don't know how people aren't tired of playing MP games, especially FPS. It's the exact same thing over and over again, no matter what FPS game it is. Or Mario and Nintendo's 1980's graphics, talk about moving on from something.

Now it's multiplayer against single player campaigns? Reading comments below breaks my heart. You're all doomed.

@khanwashere: Believe me, I'm with you here. I'm speechless and I'm so sad to see some idiots destroying what I loved for more than two decades.

Great games deserve great support from their fans, not just blablabla and likes and RTs on social medias. I've bought Wolfenstein 2 and The Evil Within 2 and I don't regret it, because they're really good titles.

"We hate lootboxes, we hate microtransactions, we love single-player games..."

Give the player a game without this garbage and they won't support it. Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus is a great game, much better than the already good The New Order, yet poor sales. What does this mean? They - players - do love lootboxes and microtransactions.

Now I have no doubts that story-driven single-player gaming is about to DIE, we players are to blame, we are helping EA in proving that Star Wars cancelation was the right decision.

@Subaru1980: Wolfenstein 2 is a grim and violent game. Not like the single player shooters I used to play. It isn't going to sell that well because most people don't enjoy spending their day playing a game like that.

Half Life, Deus Ex, System Shock, Marathon, Halo, I don't know, something I'd actually enjoy.

@Subaru1980: you are completely out of touch.

Ppl doesnt buy specific game because there are loot mts and such, they buy these games coz they love the franchise, they bought these games before there was mts and loot boxes.

Wolfenstein 2 just came out, give it bit time...dont "doom" it already

@Subaru1980: Yeah most of these fake crusaders don't support SP games anyways. They'll be buying BF2 and CoD.

Well deserved. Played about 10 hours of AC Origins so far and it is AMAZING. Combat takes a little while to get used to but once you get the hang of it it's pretty fun. Overall great game.

@nativepixel: I know. Currently playing the XB1 version (most inferior version). When I get the XB1X this game is going to get that much better. I don't think I can hold off on playing it till next week though. I'm not mentally strong enough.

@tiringpillow: I haven't played any new game in over a year, just because I'm waiting for the new XBOX to arrive. Hoping that the framerate will be improved. If it's just resolution, then I won't be wasting my money on an XBOX1 and will buy a gaming PC.

Same here, I'm happy with the game, I just have to get use to the combat.

I think people are missing out on wolfenstein. That game is really good. People complaining about how they want single player games to remain yet won't support it.

@jako998: Assassin's Creed and Mario are single player games. So is South Park, so is Middle-Earth.

Avatar image for jako998

@Mogan: I know. But fifa 18 is beating it. Plus middle earth is getting hate due to micro-transactions. Go be it a couple weeks and multiple games will get top 5 again.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@jako998: Excuse me but are you really debating Fifa? Football is the no1 sport in Europe by far, especially in UK which has a great football history and players, so Fifa or Pes will always rank high in sales,no matter what.

Doesnt mean no2 or no3 game are fails

Avatar image for Mogan

@jako998: Well, multiplayer appears to be what's most popular. But clearly gamers are supporting single player games, as half that list (including the top two) are single player only.

Deserved. Finally a good game in the AC series. Are there still bugs? Yes. Are Ubi quests still repetitive and a little dull? Yes. However, the combat changed for the good, it's finally interesting and, at times, challenging. The world they created is finally a complex and well designed one, a joy even to walk around. The story and protagonist so far are very interesting, remains to be seen if this continues. Anyway, great game finally.
