Top 10 UK Games Chart: Despite Mixed Reception, Anthem Debuts At No.1

Far Cry: New Dawn slips to No.2.

Anthem's official launch day arrived on February 22, and it has shot straight to the top of the UK physical sales chart. The PS4, Xbox One, and PC game pushes last week's No.1, Far Cry: New Dawn, down to No.2.

No more new titles entered the chart this week, allowing sales monitor Chart-Track's top 10 to remain largely unchanged. FIFA 19 rises two places to No.3, as Red Dead Redemption 2 (No.4) and Metro: Exodus (No.5) round out the top five.

Despite Anthem's chart-topping debut week however, Eurogamer reports the game's physical sales total just half the number of boxed copies shifted in the debut week of BioWare's last game, Mass Effect: Andromeda. The intervening two years have seen a shift toward a greater proportion of games' sales coming digitally--and downloads are not tracked by Chart-Track--while Anthem's various digital special editions made the game available early. However, a physical sales decrease of 50% is a considerable one--and Andromeda's boxed sales themselves were half those of the previous game in the series, Mass Effect 3.

Anthem has suffered from a number of issues so far, some of which were fixed in a day one update. The issues contributed to a mixed critical reception for BioWare's game, including a 6/10 from GameSpot in our Anthem review.

"Anthem has good ideas, but it struggles significantly with the execution," wrote Kallie Plagge. "It's a co-op game that works best with no one talking; it buries genuinely interesting character moments and puts its most incomprehensible story bits at the forefront; its combat is exciting until you get to the boss fights and find your wings have been clipped. Even the simple, exhilarating act of flying is frequently interrupted by the limitations of your javelin, and you never quite shake that feeling of disappointment--of knowing, throughout the good parts of Anthem, that you'll inevitably come crashing back down."

Anthem is fun for the first few hours untill you realise that at around lvl 17 the story abruptly stops and you have to grind to unlock tombs that basically contain nothing, the weapons all look the same except for a change of colors, every single thing for your javelin in terms of the gear, it is the same icons, they didnt even bother to change that, the descriptions are flawed, when you join a free play session prior to reaching max lvl and run in to a Titan, the rest of the team is faffing about everywhere else leaving you to fight the titan alone wich end up with you getting your ass handed to you , attempting to communicate with someone in freeplay end up in people being non responsive (this anti social egotisitcal disease have become quite common these days, its sad that people no longer socialise in games that are intended for socialisation, so .."stronger together" my ass. ) i like the flying in Anthem, the enviroments are great, the npc´s could use some work, the acts and the updates planned for this game is repetition of things that people already have played for the most part , and the rest is just a bunch of semi hidden things except for the cataclysm event that is sometime in July or something like that, overall i think that it is a pity since there was so much potential in Anthem, but strangely the things i mentioned above, the same weapons and gear apperences thats just bad that they dont even bother to make anything unique so people actually would want to work towards it, but instead want to sell that through various cash shops or place them in later elusive updates that will never end up happening because by then EA will be smacked so hard by former fans that they forget their own name, greed does not pay, and selling a product that is not finished and peeling off parts of the game to monetise it later on for those that wish to be a part of the game and have fun, thats just shameful, EA deserves to go broke in my opinion, and if this is what Bioware presents in the future then they too deserve the same route, so does every single developper that uses the disgusting "games as a service" EA model, and Activision/Blizzard along with them if they proceed to listen to a scummy company that does not have any consideration or response to their costumers regardless of any issues they might have , the thought process that once the product is sold they dont have to give a shit about what any gamer has to say, prove them wrong people, they dont deserve to exsist, and dont be conserned about not having games, there is and will always be new companies arising, people wanting to make proper content where you pay a one time fee to purchase it, and then everything that is made for the product is delivered for that sales price, then expansions can be made and sold just as it was in the past, anything else but that is unaccepteble, show them that we gamers have a voice, and our voice is our wallet.

There are 3 of us at work who play, 2 preorders and one who waited for our response. We then also have our XBox Live friends who also play. So far the circle of us are enjoying our time in Anthem. Due to timing, I have been doing more solo missions. The lot of us are all digital orders. My main gripe is that the game didn't turn into a "Awh, you got your peanut butter in my chocolate" moment. I'm lost in Fort Tarsis and I feel like I am a ghost, flowing around the city. I'm left wondering, why am I here, why am I not back in my Javelin, and why do I have to have these long fruitless conversations with people who are either mad at me or love me. A lot of the Fort Tarsis could be reduced to the Contracts and the Division-esque hub with other players. I like the Contracts and I like gaining rep with different groups. I love decorating my Storm. I don't even mind saving up for a new decal or two. Javelin design is so fresh and fun. Flying and fighting is a blast.

There are two distinct game styles going on here, one very Fallout like and one very Destiny like. But the two aren't mixing well for me yet. I don't know if the edges could be smoothed out. I feel like Bioware set out with two production crews determined not to talk to each other and bringing them together later, asked what they had. Each group showed all their work and suddenly it had to be stitched together in a haphazard way to make something of a final product.

Nearly every gamer i have spoken to is really enjoying Anthem, despite its annoying flaws, (E.g Long loading screens, waiting for teammates to get through cut scenes and dialogue at the fort). I think gaming critics are rapidly becoming irrelevant and losing touch with the common gamers. Afterall gamespot said Evolve was great, and what a POS that game turned into, while they gave Destiny a 7, and now Anthem a 6.

It's the only game that came out, so preorder hype nonsense as usual. It won't last. And when the quarterly numbers come in, EA will be declaring it "below expectations"

I'm playing Anthem on PC, it's a very fun game, a miles better then Destiny and I'm rocking the Storm Javelin! Glad it's doing well despite the harsh reviews but I also know it has it's flaws.

I don't think this is a case of loads of people buying digitally instead as physical sales are still pretty in high in the UK due to the prices for digital often being more expensive than the physical alternative.

-“Despite Anthem's chart-topping debut week however, Eurogamer reports the game's physical sales total just half the number of boxed copies shifted in the debut week of BioWare's last game, Mass Effect: Andromeda”-

I don’t think many expected Anthem to not take home the top spot this week on the charts but the above statement is very telling of its overall future.

Anthem reviews for the most part have been sub-par with what gamers were expecting so I don’t foresee it catching on the same way something like what EA was hoping for (another Destiny clone.).

Still, if EA manages to penetrate the casual gaming market with this title it could last longer than many expect. However, if this is how it is fairing in its debut (usually the strongest time for sales of a game.) then I wouldn’t hold my breath.

-BELOW EXPECTATIONS NINJA APPROVED-
