Top 10 UK Games Chart: Darksiders 3 Struggles In Debut Week

Another goal for EA.

FIFA 19 has finished top of the UK physical games chart for the second week in a row, according to sales monitor Chart-Track. EA's sports title maintains its run at the top despite Red Dead Redemption 2 gaining ground by finishing at No.2 for the week ending December 1.

Below the two huge games lies another behemoth, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which is down one place to No.3, while Battlefield V finishes at No.4 for the second week running. Forza Horizon 4 rounds out the top five.

The only new entry this week was Darksiders 3, which finished at No.32. THQ Nordic's action title has suffered from poor reviews, including a 4/10 from GameSpot. "Darksiders 3 retrogrades on its predecessors with an unfocused approach that constantly clashes with itself," wrote critic Richard Wakeling. "There are remnants of a good game here, buried within the vivacious combos of a combat style this game doesn't want to embrace. Unfortunately, it's buried far too deep to ever salvage." For more, read our full Darksiders 3 review.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches for Nintendo Switch this week, so it'll be interesting to see what effect that has on the UK sales chart. Check back next week for the outcome.

You can read the full top 10 sales chart for this week below, courtesy of UKIE and GfK Chart-Track. Note this table does not include digital sales data, and so should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.

  2. Red Dead Redemption 2
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  4. Battlefield V
  5. Forza Horizon 4
  6. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  7. Pokemon Let's Go, Pikachu
  8. Assassin's Creed Odyssey
  9. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  10. Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle

I'm sorry but after playing Darksiders 3 myself I can say with full confidence that GameSpot's review is absolute 100% grade A bullshit. This game is phenomenal old school hack and slash fun and it's punishing as ****. You will die and you will die a lot but you will feel like you know just what you need to do to succeed you just need implement it which is easier said then done. That's not to say the game isn't without faults the camera in this game is abysmal sometimes it really does feel like an old school hack and slash action game complete with old school camera issue like getting stuck in a wall or being too zoomed in on your character. The story is pretty intriguing the visuals are great(I'm playing on an Xbox One X) and Joe Madura's characters designs are just as awesome as ever. This game definitely over comes the short comings of the 2nd game and takes out all of the bloat of Darksiders 2 like the crappy RPG and loot systems stream lines it into an experience more akin to the supurb 1st game in the series. This game just reaffirms my love for this series after being a bit let down by the 2nd game and I early await The fourth game in the series with Strife. I just hope shitty reviews don't stipple this games success. Imagine giving a low score to a game just because it's hard goodness games journalist suck now a day's.

That's a shame, it could be the death (no pun intended) of the franchise if sales don't pick up soon. I guess that they'll have to slash prices to see if people will invest. If it doesn't then we'll probably be seeing this as an offering on GwG and PS Plus's IGC.

'Really good to see that AC: Odyssey is still selling, it's the best AC for a long time and deserves success.

@Marky360:

GS reviews really are hit and miss now and I don't really think of any member of staff as 100% reliable when it comes to their impartial opinions of a game, something they really need to resolve as GS page views/clicks are a joke when compared to IGN for example.

Standing on the impartial line myself with this, I have to say that the reviewer (Oscar Dayus, I believe) was commenting and marking down due to the bugs and camera issues in the game but, chances are, they were playing it prior to the day one patch in order to get a review published. A tough call as to whether it was more important to get the review out or to wait until that patch which would cause at least a few days delay of said review.

For what it's worth, I believe your take on the matter and have heard (and checked on metacritic) that the game is at least worthy of a 7/10.

u want a reviewer to speak their truth, not to follow the crowd. the 4/10 is the guys view on it. he can't lie just to make you feel good about yourself.

I'd say like 3/4 of the time i disagree with gamespot reviews, but do agree in this case.

I love independence in opinions and views so i can read opinions that are different than my own and still learn from them. I hate being lied to and not given true information, even if its hard to hear on a game i like.

Just randomly saying "Metacritic" gives the game a 7/10, means he should also??? That is totally taking away independence of a review. You need to read the negative and positive ones and decide after that.

Telling a reviewer to follow the crowd like you are here is just going to mislead people.

Darksiders 3 "suffered from poor from reviews", gs was the only ones with a 4, its a 7. Darksiders 3 is still on my list to get, I have a pile of games to go through first (blame ps+ dead by daylight month been playin it like everyday until end of november had to stop my addiction xD). Bet the game will sell better in the future.

Weird to see an old game series like Spyro in the top 10, people sure love that dragon.

I agree with the 4 gamespot used. But the games still fun if u are a fan of this game. I can say, i think its fun somewhat cause i like action rpgs, but this game feels very dated.

The level design sucks pretty hard. You can only get to point A to point B one way. its very linear and getting around is clunky. I hate how she climbs and jumps, she misses grabbing the walls often.

I think most should play on story/easy mode. Even on that you take a lot of damage, any higher and it'd be a frustration to deal with it. Just so many cheap hits from the poor camera and semi ineffective dodge ability.

Some random fps drops at times also, the game seems to have some dumb background loading of textures and this can happen when hitting an area it doesn't quite have all the assets it needs. Mostly happens in cutscenes which is odd.

Excellent game. Fast load times and no glitches. I don't know what reviewers were playing. I liked D2 better but I had a blast

Feels like DICE is being whipped to death to release a game every year or every other year. I bet we'll get a Battlefront 3 from them soon if EA doesn't close the studio.

@gamingdevil800: Why ? Most players love Battlefield V, so I don't see the problem you are seeing.

@R4gn4r0k: Basically 6 maps, a small pool of weapons compared to previous entries, parts of the game not available at launch such as customisation/battle royale/modes/story, operations have been simplified compared to BF1 winning or losing doesn't matter you'll still have to fight three times. Plus the poor marketing campaign plus an EA exec telling people not to buy it lead to poor sales. The launch strategy basically punished those who actually paid full price. Also the game is now on sale basically two weeks after launch... It's pretty clear DICE is struggling especially when you look at the Battlefront 2 DLC which is very few and far between.

Battlefield is their main focus.

I hope that it ends up selling enough to justify a part 4. I'm about 10 hours in and I'm absolutely loving it and I'm wondering if I'm playing the same game as the reviewers. My only issue is that I wish that it ran a bit better but other than that I'm in love it the game.

@xshinobi: same. I didn't get any glitches or long loading on PC. Checkpoints were kinda crappy but overall I really liked it. D2 was better but the negative stuff seems downright false to me

@xshinobi: Depends on the budget I suppose. If it was a low budget investment then honestly 100,000 to 500,000 copies sold may be enough to make a profit. Like ELEX another THQ Nordic published game only sold 100,000 and was successful for them cause the team behind Gothic, Risen & ELEX make low budget games.

I’m sure there is a multitude of various factors that played a role in Darksiders debuting so low on the charts but I think perhaps one of the most dominant positions is the fact that it has received fairly poor critical acclaim so far.

I know those less than stellar reviews will probably not keep die-hard fans of the franchise from going out and unleashing hell on more unsuspecting victims but I think this installment will find it very hard to break through anything more than that fanbase.

As such I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Darksiders 3 will probably dwindle down the charts even more as the weeks progress. It also brings into question THQ’s approach moving forward with the series (if they will at all.).

Hopefully these less than admirable sales don’t mean the end of the franchise as I think it still has lots of room for growth and improvement.

They should have advertised the game as more of a Darksiders / Dark Souls hybrid. I'm having fun with the game...after I realized that dying is a part of the experience that they were going for. I feel as though people would have been a bit more forgiving if they had been more upfront about that.

Or maybe I just wasn't in the know about all that they were saying about the game.
