Top 10 Best-Selling Games in the US for June 2016

The top ten best-selling games have been revealed by the NPD Group's monthly sales report. The top three for June are Overwatch, Grand Theft Auto V, and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The NPD's top ten is now ranked in terms of dollar sales, rather than units sold as in the past. It's also the first to cover both physical and digital copies across all platforms with exceptions for some games. For example, digital sales for Doom, Uncharted 4, and Minecraft were not included. It's also important to note that Overwatch PC sales on Battle.net were not included in the report.

Finishing off the top five are Doom and Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Lego Star Wars and Mirror's Edge are the only two games in the top ten that were released in June. Lego Star Wars' performance is impressive considering it released right at the end of the month on June 28--the report covers the period between May 29 and June 2. Mirror's Edge Catalyst, on the other hand, released on June 7.

Some of the games, such as Grand Theft Auto V and Destiny: The Taken King, were also discounted in multiple sales. On top of that, Minecraft regularly costs less than $30 on all of its available platforms.

When it comes to the total earnings of June 2016's games, it failed to reach what the games of June 2015 accomplished. Overall video game software with digital sales included dropped 20 percent from $879.7 million last year to $652.2 million this year. Games that launched this past June saw a 67 percent decrease year-over-year. This translates to about $1.8 million fewer units sold and nearly $114 million fewer dollars earned.

Nintendo released a statement, saying Super Smash Bros. for Wii U passed the two-million copy mark, while Super Smash Bros. for 3DS passed three million copies.

When it comes to hardware, Sony took the top spot once again.
