Top 10 Best-Selling Games in the US for August 2016

Madden NFL 17 and No Man's Sky shoot past last month's top games, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Overwatch.

The best-selling games of August 2016 have been revealed, as the NPD Group's monthly sales report of both physical and digital sales has been released. The top three for last month are Madden NFL 17, No Man's Sky, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The top ten is ranked in terms of dollar sales, as opposed to units sold as it was in the past.

No Man's Sky is the No. 2 game for August 2016, despite the NPD report not including its digital sales. Last month's top games, Grand Theft Auto V and Overwatch, both moved down three spots to the fourth and fifth places. It's important to note that Overwatch's digital PC sales are not included in the report.

July's third place game, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, moved down to number eight behind Rainbow Six Siege at six and Call of Duty: Black Ops III at seven. NPD top ten stalwarts Minecraft and Destiny: The Taken King took the ninth and tenth spots for August.

Last month, spending rose by nine percent year-over-year. NPD analyst Sam Naji credited the release of new games like No Man's Sky and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided with the increase. New games in August 2016 sold three times the amount of titles released in August 2015. Despite the overall increase, Naji said the spending on this year's Madden game dropped.

"Madden NFL 17 was the top-selling game for the month," Naji said. "However, there was a three percent decline in spending compared to last August release of Madden NFL 16."

On the hardware side, Xbox One beat the PS4 for the second month in a row. This happened the same month the Xbox One S released, which made up nearly a third of all console units sold.

"Thanks to our fans and their excitement for new Xbox One games and the recently launched Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming, and HDR for video and gaming, Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in August," Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said in Microsoft's statement last week. The PS4 Pro, which launches in November, does not include UHD 4K Blu-ray support.

oh yeah getting back to blackops2 when will it ever be released on the xbox one program a concerned blackops 2 fan

Avatar image for domiddian

Good stuff, glad to see some balance being restored. Although I suspect it's mostly to do with people holding off on the PS4 and waiting for the Pro.

Avatar image for sleepnsurf

Oh the tools that's bought and stand by no man's sky....

Avatar image for domiddian

@sleepnsurf: Haven't played it myself, but different strokes for different folks and all that...

Woooow, second month in a row for Xbox 1!!!111 However, I lost count of how many months in a row the PS4 was the most sold in USA. Either way, it's generally good when there's some movement for the top spot. I like that Deus Ex was so successful, I loved tossing heavy boxes at people in Human Revolution. I literally crushed all who stood against me!

Avatar image for edwardnygma

That is a really pathetic top 10.

WHO DAT, thanks for the saints thumb nail!

Avatar image for Yams1980

if a game gets refunded, does it still count as a sale?

Avatar image for angrycreep

@Yams1980: Well it should not count but I think that they might still count it as a sold game.

When madden is #1 that says it all... that's the quality of game the gaming community loves investing their money in... madden was fun in 2000 but its been same game ever since. Its not worth $60 honestly.

Avatar image for drizzygadget

@crife2015: Madden 2009, 2010 is when the difference in Madden games stopped

Avatar image for angrycreep

@crife2015: The only thing deferent about this games is the year

GTA5 still???

@smokerob79: I know right?! Like, REALLY?!

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

I found out today that I've played 87 different games on my PS4. I then counted how many out of that 87 I actually like. 15... 15 is how many I like out of 87. That's not even a 1/5. The game selection this generation is HORRIBLE! They have a game from 3 years ago still as one of the best selling month after month. That's pathetic.

@jayskoon93: it's because you're on a sinking ship called PlayStation

Avatar image for edwardnygma

@PsychicKiller82: Compared to what? Xbox's joke lineup? LOL!

Avatar image for sleepnsurf

@edwardnygma: Funny isn't it. Yet he said sinking ship not exclusive games.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@PsychicKiller82: I'm well aware of that now. I wasn't when I bought it.

The Xbox One is 1/5 of the PS. The Xbox console is going away. Xbox is about to be a PC only brand.

Avatar image for iandizion713

@jayskoon93: Yeah, lots of games flopping in sales this gen.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@iandizion713: Unfortunately so, yeah. The worst part is that every company is just rehashing old ideas or rereleasing HD versions of games that already came out.

--i remember when there were only 15 games to play
--be happy
--the gaming gods have been good to us

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@TheZeroPercent: I understand, but when you're so used to having a huge selection of awesome games from all different genres for nearly 2 decades and then that just suddenly stops, it's kinda hard to just accept that.

Avatar image for TheZeroPercent

--i mean
--from what i can see(and i have thought about this quite a bit recently)
--it is one of the best times in modern gaming(for amounts of top notch in-depth games)
--you got lots of games these days(from the past)
--that are so HUGE that you cannot finish them
--ex. i own and have played but am NO WHERE near finishing
--witcher 3~fallout4~MGS5~state of decay~no mans sky~halo 5
--i mean just this year we had(all AAAS)
--tomb raider 2~xcom 2~street fighter 5~far cry primal~the division~dark souls 3~uncharted 4~doom~overwatch~deusEX
--and now just this holiday we got(all AAAS)
--FFXV~mafia 3~watchdogs 2~gears of war 4~dead rising 4
--and no i did not put every single game up(only the main AAAS)
--i definitely do get what you are saying
--what i think we are both saying is we have ALL THESE F'N games out and coming out
--some real 'cream of the crop' in multitude and complexity
--there is A LOT of "been there done that" in the air
--and so
--maybe PSVR can actually get us going
--but yea
--even with all these amazing AAAs
--i also agree
--that it does 'for some reason' feel a bit stale
--and lackluster

Avatar image for cjtopspin

@TheZeroPercent: A lot of these kids don't remember what it was like to play games from cassette via PET BASIC. 8-bit gaming on a Commodore Vic-20 with a whopping 5KB of RAM (expandable to 32 KB of course).

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU

@jayskoon93: Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft both are always in the top 10 since their releases last gen.... and we had amazing games last gen.

I agree that this gen has been a bit disappointing, but your argument is very flawed.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@LPDisturbedHU: I'd hardly call it an argument. I was just stating a personal fact.

Avatar image for tysontalksbad

@jayskoon93: no no, when you have someone negative to say, especially about PS it is an argument to these guys.

It sad you already have 3 nerds jumping on to defend their console. You can't have convos like this anymore because fanboys ruin it.

Avatar image for domiddian

@tysontalksbad: It's all subjective at the end of the day though isn't it. I've personally had a blast on my PS4. And I was having a blast on my Xbox One until all of its exclusives started releasing on PC and now I just get the PC versions because they're cheaper and better for the most part.

By the way your "when you have someone negative to say, especially about PS" comment just makes you as bad as "those guys" you're referring too. Makes you sound like you're pointing the finger at one particular group of fanboys, when in fact, all fanboys are irrational; Xbots, Ponies, PC Turds and even Ninty Knockers.

Avatar image for tysontalksbad

@domiddian: it is all subjective.

And I only meant by saying especially PS is because the few days I been on here I've seen more PS fanboy getting defensive over everything even when it has nothing to with it. It's no doubt bith sides but I can't help but notice that this site has a stronger presence of PS fanboys. the 3 nerds I mentioned was 2 ps and 1 Xbox kids arguing right underneath the OP tho so I'm not picking sides here.

Avatar image for domiddian

@tysontalksbad: Fair enough, but there's also probably a higher concentration of PS4 owners due to the consoles success, so that's why we see more PS fanboys.

Avatar image for iamrafy

I'm surprised Rainbow 6 Siege is still selling that good, It's a great game, and they don't charge for the handful of maps they released since launch, I recommend it. Has a learning curve tho.

Avatar image for dinosaur_teeth

I stopped playing NMS when the BF1 Beta started (the day before, actually 😁)...

Think ill pop back into it later Tonite to wind down...

Avatar image for TheZeroPercent

--i gotta get that game beat
--it is like hard to 'get around to playing' for me
--there is just something about it that does not 'draw me back'
--i do think it is a good game(and each time i get the ball rolling~the game satisfies)
--i think that also
--if i never played it again
--i would be happier
--but yet
--i will beat it
--for i desire to have that memory forever(of finishing it)
--and not the memory of never finishing it ha

Avatar image for dinosaur_teeth

@TheZeroPercent: Nailed It...
