Top 10 Best-Selling Games In The US During May 2017

Injustice for all.

Today, the NPD Group released monthly sales figures for video games in the US along with vital information on the state of the industry. For the month of May, the Warner Bros. Interactive fighter based on DC Comics all-stars Injustice 2 took the top spot. The previous month's top seller, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, took second place while the four-year-old Grand Theft Auto V took third.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild hit fourth place despite the limited availability of Switch consoles and relatively small Wii U player base. Prey reached the top five in its release month, but digital sales weren't factored into its placement (Zelda and Mario Kart as well).

Injustice 2, the best-selling game of May 2017.
Injustice 2, the best-selling game of May 2017.

Compared to May of last year, game sales are down 20% to $271 million, which is largely due to high profile 2016 releases like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Overwatch, and Doom. However, overall year-to-date sales remain flat at $1.9 billion. Portable game sales shot up 10% compared to May 2016, which can be attributed to the launch of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia.

Take note that NPD's data is incomplete since digital sales are left out in many cases; figures for Prey, Overwatch, and games on Nintendo platforms are all affected.

As for the top selling games so far in 2017, Grand Theft Auto V overtook both Mass Effect: Andromeda and Resident Evil 7 to reach fifth. Injustice 2 also slid into the ninth spot with MLB 17: The Show dropping out of the top 10. And in the 12-month rolling period to May 2017, GTA V went up one spot by switching places with Overwatch.

NPD's video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella stated, "Total video game spending in May 2017, which includes hardware, software and accessories, fell 11% versus year ago to $542 million. Spending growth in hardware and accessories was offset by a decline in software spending driven by a lighter new release slate when compared to May 2016."

GTA V after 3 years at number 3. Mass Effect after three months not even on the list.

LMAO way to go EA/Bioware, great job destroying one of Biowares's prime series.

Mass Effect Andromeda being TOP 10 on Xbox One speaks volumes to me (not in a good way if you know what I mean). Phil Spencer better up his game (pun intended). Just saying.

Xboners really like Ghost Recon Wildlands. Interesting...

When did Minecraft quit selling?

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@lrdfancypants: Kids are waiting for the 4k HDR version most likely ;) lol

Grand Theft Auto V will only stop selling when everyone on the planet has a copy.

Avatar image for sdzald

More then one after all you have to be able to play it on your PC, PS and Xbox :)

EDIT ADDED: The sad part is why would Rockstar even think about releasing GTA VI as long as V stays in the top 5 every single month?

@xOmniCloudx: LOL that is definitely what I'm starting to think hahaha.

Best games don't make money and don't know why. For example, where is persona or nier? Developers don't try to make masterpieces anymore because of stupid people. :(

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@fomalhaut2: Wait..."Persona 5" was a big success in April, landing at No. 2 on the monthly NPD report, so you're saying it ISN'T a great game or masterpiece since it made money? Or are you just saying that you're making faulty generalizations?

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@fomalhaut2: Ever thought that your best isn't everyone else's ? If you make a niche product you limit your audience so by the very nature will sell less !

Avatar image for yukushi

@ltjohnnyrico: He is right people are stupid and spend their money on crap so dont try to defend it, its the same with everything the best music and movies dont make the most money, watered down crappy pop music and movies with dumb stories and over the top special effects are what sells, the average consumer doesnt care about quality they follow hype, that is why corporations spend so much money on advertising, people will just follow like a zombie and buy what they tell them to buy.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@yukushi: Music wise I'm a fan of ACDC and the rolling Stones (among others) and I don't think they did too bad in the sales dept .. but my point is Music .. film .. gaming its all subjective .. what is great for some isn't for others ! And there are certain games that are more niche and will therefore have a limited audience doesn't make them better or worse (as that part is still subjective) just means they may not sell as much ... GTA always sells well and has a wide audience etc ..

Avatar image for iskaroth

@yukushi: Sadly its true. Sales =/= quality.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a1d4b615a3a3

@fomalhaut2: Because "best" games is highly subjective. Niche Japanese games tend to be loved by critics and have a dedicated fan base but the vast majority of gamers have no interest

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@pspearman: Indeed ! Games with wider audiences will usually sell better than really niche Games .. doesn't make them better or worse.

@pspearman: "Because "best" games is highly subjective."

Depends on how you look at it really. I personally dislike the Uncharted and God Of War franchises though I'll admit I haven't given both series a truly FAIR chance. Despite this, I still acknowledge that these franchises are AAA juggernauts whether I like them or not AND I acknowledge that these franchises deserve all the praise they get from gamers and critics.

Persona is crap to me but it deserves higher sales. Nier: Automata is a GREAT game and it also deserves higher sales.

The gaming masses have poor taste. That's just a fact. They have a right to like COD whether for the campaign or the multiplayer but tell me the last time a COD game got true praise from critics and gamers on the level that COD4 and MW2 got??? Hasn't happened again.

Meanwhile great and/or sleeper hits fly under the radar of most people such as SPEC OPS: THE LINE which deserves to be noticed more at least for its campaign.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: I'm no fan of COD and I can see why it gets a lot of hate, because they basically release the same game every year with small cosmetic changes. BUT the games are always well made and if you're into the multiplayer aspect of the game (which I'm guessing 90% of COD purchasers are) then they provide exactly what the consumer is asking for. Their games never (or rarely) come out buggy or lacking in content - so I give them props for that and I can see why the games always do well.

It would be interesting to see what the inclusion of digital sales would do to those placements.

GTA V is just killing it.

Avatar image for sgtsaltnpepper

@rtehrani: People who buy new consoles usually buy GTA V as their first game. People aren't double dipping, it's just new buyers

Avatar image for PSYCHOV3N0M

@sgtsaltnpepper: PLENTY of people have bought at least 2 copies of GTA V one for last gen and current gen. Couple that with people who ALSO bought the PC version and then the single purchase buyers.

Take Two is making a KILLING on GTA V sales and that's not even including all the money they make from the online shark cards.....

Avatar image for nikolistary

@rtehrani: and I really can't understand it. Most of us double or triple dipped but it's number 3! Like doesn't everyone have this 4 year old game by now? Crazy

Avatar image for csward

@nikolistary: Many people are still upgrading from the PS3/X360 generation to the current gen. Amazing to think this late they still are, but there you go.

Avatar image for michyeosseo

@nikolistary: Maybe in 10 years from now A&E will show an episode of Hoarders where someone decided to buy 10 million copies of GTA V. "GTA V is love, GTA V is life"

Avatar image for yogibbear

@michyeosseo: Probably a parody scene in GTA VI
