Top-10 Best Selling Games in the US During January 2017

Resident Evil 7 comes out on top despite releasing late in the month.

The NPD Group today released its monthly sales report for the United States during January 2017, including the list of the month's best-selling games in terms of dollar sales.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare fell to the No. 2 spot, with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard coming out on top. That's an impressive accomplishment given this NPD report only covers January 1-29, giving it only five days on store shelves. The only other new January release to make the top 10 was Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue at No. 6.

As it did last month, we've again gotten a breakdown of the top sellers on a per-platform basis. Most notably, the PS4's top 10 doesn't include two of the month's big exclusives, Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2. (An absence of digital sales data for those two and late releases in the month might explain their absence, although they are more niche titles to begin with.) Tales of Berseria, a new PS4-only RPG, did make it to the No. 9 spot.

Overall, total industry spend was down four percent year-over-year to $611 million. However, software sales were up 14 percent to $313 million, which NPD analyst Sam Naji attributes largely to Resident Evil 7. Naji also notes, "The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5."

Last month, we received the NPD's report for December 2016 and the year overall. Infinite Warfare topped both of those lists.

We learned last week that the PS4 outsold Xbox One in the US during January. Microsoft noted at the time that, Xbox One was the only console with year-over-year growth, though not enough to help it reach the No. 1 spot. The NPD added today that the PS4's top-selling model was the Uncharted 4 PS4 Slim bundle, while the third-best selling console during the month was the NES Classic Edition (which remains supply-constrained).

You can see all of the lists NPD shared below. Keep in mind, these lists are ranked in terms of dollar sales and combine physical sales with digital sales from select publishers (notable absences include Nintendo and in the US. Games marked with an asterisk are those that don't include digital sales.

50 million consoles to play multiplats.

Anyone else find it a bit disconcerting that the supposed 3DS popular games can't even crack the top 10 overall only a couple months after debut?

Avatar image for Rambolike

Really good to see Resident Evil doing so well; such a great game and return to form.

Avatar image for NBKNAS

I wonder how much Overwatch is selling considering most people probably buy it on bnet.. i know they recently announced they have reached 25 million.

Avatar image for speedytimsi

Since digital purchases don't count towards these statistics, isn't it almost misleading?

Avatar image for fedor

@speedytimsi: not if they're upfront about it.

LOL Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Grand Theft Auto V

Avatar image for santinegrete

Ugh, sports games on the top 10. Games based on games, go play the real thing with a real ball :D

Avatar image for bermil

I am not surprised to see RE on the top of the list but I didn't know that GTA was still selling so well

Avatar image for iammcgruber

@bermil: it's been in the top 10 for years

No Yakuza 0, or Gravity Rush, or Last Guardian. PS4 owners don't seem to want to play their own exclusives. And OH LOOK, Call of Duty is number 2, the game NO GAMER supposedly plays and the one game ALL GAMERS are supposedly tired of and don't want to play anymore.

That's a lot of sales for a franchise everyone is SUPPOSEDLY tired of playing. Once again the loud mouthed gamer is a minority, the real world is a very different place. This is why I don't take any of the comment section Switch hate seriously, you're just a small group of loud people, and nobody cares what you think. Because the numbers never seem to be on your side. You want new games IPs but they don't sell. You say you're tired of old franchises, but they ALWAYS sell. Everything you say never seems to come to fruition.

Avatar image for e3man01

@Bread_or_Decide: That's why the talk of exclusives of X1 v PS4 is pretty much meaningless, they don't sell nearly as well as the 3rd party games. And both systems are 3rd party machines if we're being honest. Sony's best first party game on the 4, Uncharted 4 didn't place in the top 10 sold for the year.

Avatar image for fedor

@Bread_or_Decide: there isn't a single exclusive up there... Which any person with a brain would have expected.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@fedor: So you didn't look at the portable or Wii U best sellers lists?

Avatar image for fedor

@Bread_or_Decide: why would I? I look at overall. Oh and kingdom hearts charted, so I guess an exclusive did make it in.

Avatar image for lionheartssj1

Man...been waiting for that price drop on GTA V so I can upgrade from the 360 version. Never gonna happen.

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@lionheartssj1: GTA V is, like, $37 for either the PS4 or XB1 version over at Amazon. Hell, it's $30 as part of the Flash Sale over at the PlayStation Store.

Just how much of a price drop are you looking for?

Avatar image for lionheartssj1

@zmanbarzel: Well, I already exhausted the game for the 360 so buying it again would purely be for aesthetics. $20 or under would be nice for a luxury upgrade.

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@lionheartssj1: Fair enough! (And I apologize for the tone of my first reply to you.)

Avatar image for tarheelsforever

@lionheartssj1: youve been waiting "that long" for a price drop??? geez.

Avatar image for Supabul

Well at least Overwatch is a new ip, but seriously the same big name franchises always in the charts it's no wonder new ips get cancelled like MS with Scalebound and Sony even cancelled an awesome looking new ip from Santa Monica Studio and got them making GOW instead

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@Supabul: Keep in mind, though, that charts for December and January have a habit of skewing toward "evergreen" titles such as the most recent Call of Duty, Madden and GTA games as new console owners are looking to start their libraries with the basics.

Avatar image for jyml8582

I dare say that GTAV could be the greatest game of all time at this point.

Avatar image for Litchie

@jyml8582: LOL

Avatar image for Gomtor

RE 7 - finished it yesterday and imo is very, very good.

Avatar image for the-games-masta

proof that in the wider scheme of things, exclusives mean very little

Avatar image for Myron117

@the-games-masta: nope, proof is in the console numbers that exclusives matter.

Avatar image for the-games-masta

@Myron117: so the masses buy a PS4 for its exclusives but then don't bother buying any of those exclusives in any great number. Nice fanboy logic you have there. If you had half a brain you'd realise that PS4 sales have had very little to do with exclusives

Avatar image for Myron117

@the-games-masta: well if you think about it, the ps4 has a shit tonne more exclusives than the xbox so the sales will be spread thinner as more people have choice and not the same 3 games the MS seems to love peddling.

Let me ask you this hypothetical:

There are two consoles that play the exact same games. Is there a point in buying both? There is no point in buying both you may as well buy one right?

But if there was a machine that does the same games as the competition but has 3 or 4 games exclusive to it, which one would you chose?

Avatar image for the-games-masta

@Myron117: but in most cases it's quantity over quality - unless you really like JRPGs and the 'ton' of exclusive games includes a bunch most people won't ever be interested in playing. Sure for core gamers it can be appealing but for the majority of the market it makes little to no difference, after all there's only so much time available to play games

Avatar image for moose-fitz

Whenever you unseat CoD that's impressive (even if just for a short time.) Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Avatar image for WhoIsTheDrizzle

So basically overwatch would more than likely be in the top 3 if they counted sales

Avatar image for yumyumnomnom

Even after all these years GTAV still cracking the top 5.

Avatar image for SprSynJn

@yumyumnomnom: Is GTAO that good? When I played it back on the PS3, it was kinda meh.

Avatar image for macaque12

@SprSynJn: It's one of those games that people are too scared to say they don't like or it's not that good. It's a great game, no doubt. But not as good as people claim it is

Avatar image for The_Man_On_Fire

XBOX ONE still Number ONE

Avatar image for drprophecy

@The_Man_On_Fire: Indeed, it is number one.

That is its name, and it's "one" of a kind. Too bad, we don't get to see Number Two. Maybe after Scorpio, if it does well.

Avatar image for freeryu

@The_Man_On_Fire: wat

Avatar image for sol_invictus3

Final Fantasy 15 failed hard guess the title is accurate this time.

Avatar image for drsw36

@sol_invictus3: err the game actually sold really well.

Avatar image for sol_invictus3

Compared to what No Man's Sky? FF15 is still new but barely in top 10 even flopping in Japan.

Avatar image for stage4saiyan

@sol_invictus3: It sold over 6 million, and broke even on day 1...

Avatar image for videogameninja

Not really a huge surprise considering Resident Evil 7 is one of the only new games in a major franchise (the other being Yakuza.) for the month of January.

Let’s face it, a good portion of a new games sales (unless they are of the mainstream call of duty, grand theft auto, Pokemon, Mario type.) are going to be in the first day or first few days from its initial release.

Still, great news to see it knock down such “staples” of the sales charts despite those games having been on the market for quite some time. When you factor in the controversy that surrounded this game before it even launched that makes this achievement somewhat more impressive.

I just hope the positive reviews and strong word of mouth will propel this game to sell enough copies to send Capcom a “message” about what direction they should be moving the franchise towards.

Avatar image for JEF8484

@videogameninja: I think they get it. 8 will probably follow similar gameplay elements but probably have more enemy variety and bigger scale. I'm thinking it will be like how RE2 was to RE1.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

Nice to see RE7 on top, and glad people are enjoying DQ8, best RPG

Avatar image for iandizion713
