Top-10 Best Selling Games in the US During January 2017

Resident Evil 7 comes out on top despite releasing late in the month.

The NPD Group today released its monthly sales report for the United States during January 2017, including the list of the month's best-selling games in terms of dollar sales.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare fell to the No. 2 spot, with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard coming out on top. That's an impressive accomplishment given this NPD report only covers January 1-29, giving it only five days on store shelves. The only other new January release to make the top 10 was Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue at No. 6.

As it did last month, we've again gotten a breakdown of the top sellers on a per-platform basis. Most notably, the PS4's top 10 doesn't include two of the month's big exclusives, Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2. (An absence of digital sales data for those two and late releases in the month might explain their absence, although they are more niche titles to begin with.) Tales of Berseria, a new PS4-only RPG, did make it to the No. 9 spot.

Overall, total industry spend was down four percent year-over-year to $611 million. However, software sales were up 14 percent to $313 million, which NPD analyst Sam Naji attributes largely to Resident Evil 7. Naji also notes, "The last time Capcom had the best-selling game of the month (in dollar sales) was in March 2009 with Resident Evil 5."

Last month, we received the NPD's report for December 2016 and the year overall. Infinite Warfare topped both of those lists.

We learned last week that the PS4 outsold Xbox One in the US during January. Microsoft noted at the time that, Xbox One was the only console with year-over-year growth, though not enough to help it reach the No. 1 spot. The NPD added today that the PS4's top-selling model was the Uncharted 4 PS4 Slim bundle, while the third-best selling console during the month was the NES Classic Edition (which remains supply-constrained).

You can see all of the lists NPD shared below. Keep in mind, these lists are ranked in terms of dollar sales and combine physical sales with digital sales from select publishers (notable absences include Nintendo and Battle.net) in the US. Games marked with an asterisk are those that don't include digital sales.
