Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Officially Revealed for PS4/PS3, Xbox One/360

The new Tony Hawk comes to consoles later this year.

Tony Hawk is returning to the video game skateboard scene later this year with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5--the first original Pro Skater game since 2002's THPS4--it was revealed today.

After a long stretch during which we were provided with a number of hints that a new Tony Hawk was in the works, publisher Activision outright confirmed that such a game was in development for 2015 last November. After Hawk described the game as a new Pro Skater later that month, we now finally have the first official details (and name), courtesy of Game Informer.

No Caption Provided

Developed by Robomodo, the studio responsible for Tony Hawk Ride, Shred, and Pro Skater HD, the game takes the style the Tony Hawk franchise was initially known for--hence the return to the Pro Skater name--and introduces some new wrinkles. These include power-ups and at least one mission-specific ability that allows you to shoot some kind of projectile.

You'll be able to play through those missions either on your own or online, both competitively and cooperatively. Your character and progress can be moved back and forth between the online and offline portions of the game, with Game Informer describing the transition as "seamless." Players will also be able to design skate parks that can be shared online.

Skaters from past games will return alongside newer members of the scene; Hawk, Nyjah Huston, Aaron Homoki, Ishod Wair, Riley Hawk (Tony Hawk's son), Lizzie Armanto, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Leticia Bufoni, and Andrew Reynolds are all confirmed to be included.

Pro Skater 5 will be released on PS4 and Xbox One before the end of the year, with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions coming at some point after that. More details are available in the June issue of Game Informer.

@chadhip: 2 completely different games. While SKATE is more of a realistic simulator, THPS is more of an arcade skater. They're equally good at what they do.

@pontusgx95 their both arcade. 720 kick flipping off a 5story building to a parking block darkslide isn't realistic. SKATE is realistic in the sense of how you perform tricks with the controller, how better it looks and how natural it feels. Tony Hawk 1 was great when it first came out. It's been going downhill ever since. You're paying for the name not the game play, it's meant to be a cash cow. I'll wait for SK3 if it ever comes out.

@chadhip: I would argue that 2 and 3 greatly improved THPS1's formula by adding things like manuals, reverts, and a park editor if I recall correctly.

To everyone moaning about the graphics.

a) This game is still in development. They still have plenty of time to upgrade the graphics.

b) Gameplay is more important anyway.

I can let the underwhelming graphics slide as long as the gameplay is good. I actually had a lot of fun with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD. If it's even a little better than that, I'll probably like it.

@Trev786: Normally I would point out that the game isn't finished and wont be for a few months, but those screenshots at Gameinformer look pretty underwhelming. As a fan of of the series on PS2, I'm going stay optimistic.

Just one question. Is it going to be filled with all of kinds of cool unlocks like the old games, or is it going to be a ton of microtransactions? If the later, then I wont buy.

@jidar: It's Activision... the Marvel character skin packs (if Disney lets such a deal happen) will almost assuredly be paid DLC.

@chriswilkes509: You can't build a skate park in the first one though. That feature was added in THPS2 :3

Robomodo again? Can someone explain me whats going on at Activision? They close Neversoft and Z-Axis, far better developers that have experience with those kind of games, while let the guys who made that awful remake develop the long awaited sequel to TP4.

pro skater HD was rubbish so i don't expect much from this, neversoft was the best back in the day, everything from the series is soulless now because they are gone. :(

@huyi12:

The only thing rubbish about it was the glitches, but for the most part it played like a Tony Hawk game should.

Sweet Tony Hawk's! Oh wait....Activision. Activision were good back in the TH days. CoD was actually good as well (when it was fresh). I have no doubt that Activision will trash this, release a 3rd of the game then sell the rest as DLC.

I'm going to need more details and gameplay before I'd even start getting excited for this. Tony Hawk Underground 1/2, American Wasteland and Project 8 were my favorites.

Meh, probably going to be some downloadable game, kinda like THPS HD. Can't see this being a full $59.99 type game, or at least I sure wouldn't want to spend that amount on another THPS game. I'm waiting for another Skate, personally.

@Amster_G: I would love another Skate game, but I think the trilogy we got is all we are getting. The gaming studio BlackBox which developed them shut down.

@ogreatgames: Robomodo sucks ass, they were the direct reason for the ruination of the franchise......not only did they make 3 bad games they made a device that absolutely failed in every way possible....and excluded gamers from enjoying it.....

Ride & Shred were unplayable by anyone who didn't actually ride a skateboard.....the HD collection was a fail cus it was overpriced and had no modes to it....just the typical; score attack and challenges and hardly any levels....

sorry but these morons suck ass, I'm not buying their trash.....

Here's hoping this one will actually be decent unlike everything from Robomondo. If Rodney Mullen is not in it, thats probably an immediate no buy for me, though

seriously **** off activision. you don't give 2 shits about making a good game and just milk shit dry and then regurgitate said shit over and over till it stops selling. then you shut a studio down and blame it on them. stop making call of duty. stop making terrible sequels. infact stop making games altogether.

Although it is good to see this franchise making a return, Activision 10-15 years ago were a little different than todays Activision. And as it is a Tony Hawk game without Neversoft as developers, I would REALLY advice to not get your hopes high for this, I sure as hell won't, even though i played all the Tony Hawk games to death when i was little and the games were a huge part of my childhood.

@GamerX500: I'm pretty sure Z-Axis could have pulled it off. They made Aggressive Inline and the first two Dave Mirra games. However, Activision closed them as well.
