Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Officially Revealed for PS4/PS3, Xbox One/360

The new Tony Hawk comes to consoles later this year.

Tony Hawk is returning to the video game skateboard scene later this year with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5--the first original Pro Skater game since 2002's THPS4--it was revealed today.

After a long stretch during which we were provided with a number of hints that a new Tony Hawk was in the works, publisher Activision outright confirmed that such a game was in development for 2015 last November. After Hawk described the game as a new Pro Skater later that month, we now finally have the first official details (and name), courtesy of Game Informer.

No Caption Provided

Developed by Robomodo, the studio responsible for Tony Hawk Ride, Shred, and Pro Skater HD, the game takes the style the Tony Hawk franchise was initially known for--hence the return to the Pro Skater name--and introduces some new wrinkles. These include power-ups and at least one mission-specific ability that allows you to shoot some kind of projectile.

You'll be able to play through those missions either on your own or online, both competitively and cooperatively. Your character and progress can be moved back and forth between the online and offline portions of the game, with Game Informer describing the transition as "seamless." Players will also be able to design skate parks that can be shared online.

Skaters from past games will return alongside newer members of the scene; Hawk, Nyjah Huston, Aaron Homoki, Ishod Wair, Riley Hawk (Tony Hawk's son), Lizzie Armanto, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Leticia Bufoni, and Andrew Reynolds are all confirmed to be included.

Pro Skater 5 will be released on PS4 and Xbox One before the end of the year, with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions coming at some point after that. More details are available in the June issue of Game Informer.

Is this series any good?

I heard back in the day that they were really good but as of late the quality dropped hard.

@davem1992 Tony Hawk 3 is one of the few games to get a 10, and it did back in the day, when it was much much harder.

@davem1992: The first three games on PS1, PS2 and Xbox are considered to be the best skateboarding games ever made. But then with the PS3 and 360, the series ended up in a creative rut, causing Activision to commission Robomodo to release Ride and Shred, two games with awful skateboarding peripherals that didn't work at all. Glad to see that the series is finally going back to basics.

@robertcain@davem1992: Don't forget N64, that's where I played them on. And that game introduced me to skateboarding in general, and is the reason I know how to skate today. Very influential to games and the sport of skateboarding, skaters wouldn't get paid like they do today if it wasn't for that game. It was very successful.

Most of the spinoffs were good like underground but THPS is the OG of the series and i think one of the few games to get a 10 here on Gamespot if I remember correctly.

@bamster28@robertcain@davem1992: The first four games were almost perfect. Underground had a few problems, but was still very good. Underground 2 was an improvment, American Wasteland was good, but had some major flaws and was the first big drop in quality. Project 8 was great again and Proving Ground a mediocre sequel. Everything afterwards was junk.

@davem1992: THPS was the original ultimate skating game and is regarded as the industry standard. there hasn't been a release in the pro skater branch of the franchise since 2002. all of the other games that suffered in quality were just spin-offs. but yes, "Pro Skater" is an awesome series.

I'd rather have a next-gen entry in the "Skate" series. The controls were closer to actual skating than the Tony Hawk series.

@LpcWarrior: Skate is more realistic, but Tony Hawk has never been about realism, at least not after THPS 2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is the NBA Jam to the NBA 2K that is Skate. If you know what I mean.

@bamster28@LpcWarrior: Agree completely. The TH games were always more arcade-y. Maybe I'm biased because I actually skated growing up and while I loved the TH games, as soon as Skate came out, it became a way for me to keep skating (too many sprained ankles).

@LpcWarrior: But was it more fun? I hated Skate personally, and I played the hell out of Tony Hawk 2 when it was new. Tony Hawk wasn't about realism, it was about stringing together an obscene amount of tricks in a combo and earning massive points.

Robomodo? Sounds like a big nope. I hope I'm wrong but they've failed three times in a row with the Tony Hawk franchise. History suggests that they'll fail again.

For some reason I keep wanting this game to be a DLC that you can download to your favorite game for example GTA5 , Wasteland, or any other title, and run around in it.

@playstationzone: Well they did say you could shoot projectiles in this new THPS 5, I wish this was DLC for GTA V I'd totally pay for that! Shoot rocket launchers while on a skateboard, skitching on the back of cars in missions. Plus races. I'm down for that.

Instead of wasting money and breath on X360/PS3, they could have released the game on PC.

Great. More "next gen" games held back by last gen tech. I realize why they do it, but it's annoying.

The graphics are horrible the guy doing the trick looks like a smoothed out PS2 model. I know it's not enough information but if that's your best work and what you're releasing I can wait to see how half assed the gameplay is packaged.

My son used to love these games. So much so that he did a school essay on Tony Hawk. Thank God he's grown out of that. Saves me $70.00.
