Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 Officially Revealed for PS4/PS3, Xbox One/360

The new Tony Hawk comes to consoles later this year.

Tony Hawk is returning to the video game skateboard scene later this year with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5--the first original Pro Skater game since 2002's THPS4--it was revealed today.

After a long stretch during which we were provided with a number of hints that a new Tony Hawk was in the works, publisher Activision outright confirmed that such a game was in development for 2015 last November. After Hawk described the game as a new Pro Skater later that month, we now finally have the first official details (and name), courtesy of Game Informer.

No Caption Provided

Developed by Robomodo, the studio responsible for Tony Hawk Ride, Shred, and Pro Skater HD, the game takes the style the Tony Hawk franchise was initially known for--hence the return to the Pro Skater name--and introduces some new wrinkles. These include power-ups and at least one mission-specific ability that allows you to shoot some kind of projectile.

You'll be able to play through those missions either on your own or online, both competitively and cooperatively. Your character and progress can be moved back and forth between the online and offline portions of the game, with Game Informer describing the transition as "seamless." Players will also be able to design skate parks that can be shared online.

Skaters from past games will return alongside newer members of the scene; Hawk, Nyjah Huston, Aaron Homoki, Ishod Wair, Riley Hawk (Tony Hawk's son), Lizzie Armanto, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Leticia Bufoni, and Andrew Reynolds are all confirmed to be included.

Pro Skater 5 will be released on PS4 and Xbox One before the end of the year, with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions coming at some point after that. More details are available in the June issue of Game Informer.

@chippiez: I've never cared if a game is 30 fps or 60... to me, it doesn't matter. A jittery screen is something gamers have grown up with. I like the 30 fps motion, it is criticized for nothing. Get over it.

@xenocraigmorph@chippiez: That's PC gamers for you. Care more about frame rates than they do the game itself.

@turianshepard: I beg to differ. PC gamers only care for graphics, which is why they choose to play on PC. How you could use a mouse and keyboard for Skating games? Oh, yeah, you use a Console Controller; a slight essence of Irony.

@xenocraigmorph@turianshepard: I prefer the best version of a game possible, thats why I play PC. if 60fps and great fidelity is possible you'd have to be a fool not to take advantage. Nothing ironic about using a controller either, I've been using controllers on PC since the 90's. No irony, just your ignorance.

@turianshepard@xenocraigmorph: I'm far from ignorant, just to clear that out of the way. I enjoy games for the game play, nothing more. Graphics are their to please our eyes, which they do. 60 fps in kind to the eyes, but it doesn't matter. That is why I said there was a slight essence of irony. Here you are, a PC gamer, using a controller (360?) or some third party tech. It just makes me chuckle.

@xenocraigmorph@turianshepard: Why does using a controller for pc make you chuckle? Controllers for pc have for the most part always been around. Logitech has been making controller before the 360 ever came out. I personally use the xbox1 one controller just because it's an awesome controller. When I'm racing I use a wheel which console players started using after the pc. And when I'm playing shooters I use keyboard an mouse. PC is a superior entertainment machine in every way. Consoles have been good up until this new gen. Now PC is starting to take over in a major way. Remember that console games are made on pcs if you wanna talk irony and chuckling.

@xenocraigmorph@turianshepard: Like I said, there is no irony. Controllers have been around for PC since PC gaming was a thing. 60fps also enhances the gameplay experience. It's ignorance, plain and simple.

@420killaz@turianshepard@xenocraigmorph: How so? If my "crappy" port runs 60fps and at a higher fidelity how does the console version run better? Hint: It doesn't.

@turianshepard@420killaz@turianshepard: Because the console version will run better overall than the PC port. It may not have the framerates the PC has, but I'm sure everything else will be buggy and broken.

When I said it runs better on consoles, you automatically jumped the conclusion that I'm talking only about framerates. That may make a game run smoother, but not necessarily better.

You automatically assume there will be game breaking bugs... When someone talks about how something runs they're typically talking about the frame rate.

@turianshepard: I think you mean when PC gamers talk about how something runs, they talk about frame rates.

I usually assume there will be game breaking bugs because it happens all too often with PC ports. In the end I guess it doesn't really matter though, because PC isn't getting the game anyways.

No, console gamers... That's why stuff like digital foundry exists... So console gamers can see how well the frame rate holds... Furthermore, PC games rarley have actual game breaking bugs, and if they do its fixed within a couple days. Its ok though, I forgive your ignorance.

No Windows version. Typical of these guys.

Even if someone like Aspyr ports it over, I don't think I'd buy it -- the last one was the worst port I've ever played in my life. It felt more like an emulated game rather than a port.

So bad that it made GTA IV PC look good.

bring back mullen, thomas, lasek, burnquist and daewong. As a person who grew up loving thps and got into skateboarding because of it i can say without a doubt this game will flop unless they make the controls like the skate franchise. i dont think there is a market for these games now.

I don't know, but Robomodo keeps ignoring the mode. They even took it out as well ad 2 player coop on the remake. I think an online tournament mode with horse would be awesome. I think they believe we don't want to watch others playing.

The only Tony Hawk game I ever played was Pro Skater 4, which I loved. I heard a lot of mixed things about the ones that came after it and got scared away from trying them.

Hopefully this next one is as good as THPS4. All they need to do is have large worlds with tons of moves and challenges like before and it will be golden.
