Tomb Raider Reboot Sells 8.5 Million Copies, Breaks Franchise Records

The 2013 game is now the best-selling entry in the series of all time.

The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, developed by Crystal Dynamics, has now sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide, up from 7 million in February. That makes it the best-selling entry in franchise history, the Square Enix-owned studio announced on Monday. Released in March 2013, Tomb Raider also broke records for first-day and first-month sales, the developer said today.

No Caption Provided

Tomb Raider may have broken sales records, but the adventure game's first-month sales tally of 3.6 million copies failed to meet Square Enix's expectations.

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics later released a Definitive Edition version of Tomb Raider in January 2015 across Xbox One and PlayStation 4, bringing with it better graphics and more content.

The 8.5 million figure does include sales of the Definitive Edition, a representative for Square Enix told GameSpot.

Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said he's thrilled by the game's sales.

“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level," he said in a statement "The game's incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players."

The next Tomb Raider game--Rise of the Tomb Raider--launches for Xbox 360 and Xbox One this fall through an exclusivity arrangement between Square Enix and Microsoft, which will serve as the game's publisher. This exclusivity deal has a duration, meaning the game could come to PlayStation systems later on, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Well that's all fine and dandy, but Square Enix just got greedy and have blown it all. When they took the MS corrupt bride to deny the loyal Playstation fans from playing the next Tomb Raider on the timed exclusive, they just lost it all in an instant. Gamers like me who have supported the franchise from day one on Playstation and made the game such a success now want justice.

We will get that justice by refusing to buy the next Tomb Raider when Square Enix decide we can have it. We will then buy it at a later date when the price comes down to rob Square Enix of any profit. Any other game devs and publishers tempted to try the same stunt for short term gain beware. We are real people and we bite.

If they would remake TR Angel Of Darkness it would have sold more than 10 millions.

8.5 million sales of the reboot makes a nice profit if you multiply that by the price of each game sold. Most of those sales would have been on the PS3 and PS4 so you have to wonder how big the MS corrupt bribe was to deny the next one from appearing on PS4.

I don't think MS would have covered the loss somehow, so Square Enix will have to come back cap in hand to the PS4 and beg for forgiveness (timed exclusive?) after stabbing all the loyal TR fans in the back for short term financial gain.

Ofcourse it's legal but it's morally wrong what MS are doing. It's a perfect example of Microsoft's nasty brand of capitalism. MS Pay To Deny, while Sony Pay To Create. MS are negative, Sony are positive.

This is the MS attitude. When is a race, if you cannot run very fast because you're too lazy to train, just smack the fastest runner in the knee caps in order to nobble him so you can win. It's lame and does not win any respect from me.

MS pay a corrupt bribe to a dev in order to deny gamers on a rival platform from playing it. That's financial corruption which ever way you paint it. Sony never pay to deny. 3rd party exclusivity on PS4 is always decided by the 3rd party dev when they study the market.

Sony 1st party exclusives are true exclusives because Sony own the studio, fund the whole game and pay the wages. The game would not exist if Sony did not fund it from start to finish.

MS did not make Tomb Raider, they do not own the studio or pay the wages. The game exists without MS help and is funded by a 3rd party company off the back of fans who have made the series a success. MS are just bribing the greedy publisher and offering them short term financial gain. But the morals are all screwed because the TR fans who made the franchise such a success are being stabbed in the back. That is an unforgivable betrayal.

Imagine if you had followed a band like U2 for years buying every CD and going to every concert, then they do a deal so that their next CD can only be played on a Hitachi CD player. It's not illegal but it stinks big time and you would be extremely annoyed at them. You certainly wouldn't buy a U2 CD ever again.

If they'd get rid of the 'key mashing' it would actually be worth playing.

Bought my copy for $9. The game play, mechanics, design and style were all excellent. The characters and the story on the other hand . . . . . . were completely atrocious.

My personal GOTY 2014. Played through on PC twice and once on PS3 and partially through a couple other saves.

Am looking forward to Rise of TR, but disappointed by its XBO exclusivity deal. Will likely buy it at some point though considering my enjoyment with the previous game.

PC version was bought on GOG and activated on Steam

PS3 version free w/PS+

This fact only shows how out-of-touch and moronic the folks at Square Enix are. They were 'disappointed' with the initial release, to the point of perhaps not developing/releasing another version of the game in the series.

This is the 'suit' issue -- some mid-management vice president makes a decision based on the color of their socks, and it becomes law. If the publisher had any idea at all about the nature and value of their product, or the people who purchase their product, we would never have such asinine statements made.

Hmmm, according to Steamspy (which usually proves pretty accurate) 2.9m of those sales are on Steam. Doesn't add up to me.

Does it matter active or not if we are talking sales?

I don't think Publishers really care if you play their released games, just as long as you buy it.

Either way you are speculating.

I actually believe that DOTA figure. I mean every one of my Steam Friends has it in their library (me included) and don't play it. Its free, I tried it once.

Looking at the way they work it out, recent and past figures released by devs/publishers it's pretty accurate. It gives a +/- figure and a % of accuracy.

Tomb Raider was excellent, and it deserved to sell very well. I'm still surprised that it keeps chalking up the monthly figures that it does?

The Tomb Raider series is slowly regaining its relevance. I know this installment sold more than any other in the franchise but it still doesn't seem nearly as popular as it was in the PS1-era.

I don't have anything against Tomb Raider but just to put this franchise into perspective: Uncharted 3 sold 3.8 million copies in one day. How long did it take Lara to reach 8.5 million?

Hopefully Rise of the Tomb Raider will be awesome enough to speed past that franchise-sales record.

Take it up with GameSpot's BS, I'm just going by their article.

Okay so overall Uncharted 3 sales are 6 million compared to Tomb Raider's 8.5 million...Tomb Raider came out on five different platforms when you count the Definitive Edition(which they did). Uncharted 3 is only available on one.

Just sayin'.

It's a success because they dumbed down the game and made it mainstream. In all the other games you actually had to use your brain to solve the puzzles but this one found success from borrowing the uncharted formula and adding rpg like elements where you unlock more stuff over time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What are you talking about? Companies do exclusive (or now, timed exclusive) deals to draw people to their consoles. Sega had a deal with Eidos so that Tomb Raider would come out first on the Saturn. Then, Sony did an exclusive deal with them, and the sequels never made it to the Saturn, which hurt Sega a LOT.

Oh great...

Now EVERY entry in the series will be more about action than puzzle/platforming.

Tomb Raider is killing my love for it slowly.

It's now a solid action game... but that is not, and has not ever been why I played it.

The future will be everyone will have nerve gear like stuff for gaming, and be able to create their own perfect world for themselves, basically living your dream the way you want, that's basically the ultimate gaming experience that will be created, and then the capitalists come and put a multiplayer in it, making it so we're playing multiverse in our head.
