Tomb Raider on Xbox One and PS4 is 1080p, sells for $60

Crystal Dynamics confirms launch details for upcoming Definitive Edition of action game; every strand of Lara's hair will be "physically active."

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition confirmed this weekend for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will run in native 1080p for both consoles, Crystal Dynamics has announced. The developer also shared various launch details, including price. The new version of Tomb Raider will sell for $60 on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The game is described as "fully rebuilt" for the new consoles. It features an all-new Lara model "created to take advantage of the power of next-gen consoles," as well as TRESS FX technology that promises to deliver "realistic" hair simulation and motion. Every strand of Lara's hair will be "physically active," Crystal Dynamics said.

What's more, the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Tomb Raider will feature updates to the game's shader and lighting systems. Updated sweat, mud, and blood material effects are promised.

Regarding the gameworld, Crystal Dynamics said trees, foliage, cloth, weather, and lighting have all been updated. All texture resolutions have beefed up four times over, the developer said. Destructibility of the game environment has also been "enhanced for added depth and realism," though no specific examples were provided.

Concerning on-disc content, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will feature the original game, as well as "all" of the previously released downloadable content. Digital versions of the Dark Horse Tomb Raider comic book, a mini art book from Brady Games, and the Final Houses developer videos are also included in the package. Preordering nets you a special art book packaging featuring never-before-seen concept art.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition launches January 28, 2014. For more, check out GameSpot's review of Tomb Raider from March 2013.

Face Palm i can smell the rip off from here. The PC version which is the superior version isn't selling no where near this much hell i got the game for 25$ while it was 49.99 on steam so why do they continue to try to rip off the gamers ? yet the sheep's continue to support it with their wallet sad. Note PS4 & Xbox One are running X86 basic so re building it isn't hard like PS3 & xbox 360 hardware was.

@ladies_man_xxx I wouldn't call it a proper reboot at all. All TR 2013 is, is Square Enix trying to copy Uncharted, but making it openworld and less linear. Pretty sure Square Enix considered the game a failure, and most people do consider it a failure as a game - not just a product.

No it's all about the complexity of the game. XB1 can run 1080p if the game isn't too taxing. The most taxing games are open world games. No developer can work enough magic to ever get 1080p out of an XB1 in an open world game. The XB1 hardware is the bottleneck not the dev. If you're hanging into the thought that it is the developer, you're going to be forever angry and be condemned to play 720p or 900p games forever.

Xboxers claimed the same with Naughty Dog. The said the great graphics were the product of the programmers. They are very talented devs but they could not have achieved what they did without the power of PS3.

Example, Forza 5 is running 1080p 60fps not because the devs are magicians. It's running 1080p 60fps because the game is a racer. A linear graphical tunnel with a limited view to render. Gran Turismo was the same, running 1080p 60fps on PS3, and that was current gen 4 years ago. XB1 is way behind the power curve.

The XB1 GPU is 50% less powerful. It's RAM memory is 50% slower. 720p is 50% less pixels than 1080p. That's no coincidence. The hardware can only do what the hardware can do. Forget MS claims of magical fairy dust and the unlimited power of the cloud.

I repeat, it's all about game complexity.

@justerthought @ladies_man_xxx You fucking idiot. p is not a measurement of pixels. p stands for progressive scan. Progressive scan is a method of screen refresh on an LCD monitor/TV - if a game is at 720p versus 1080p that means they could only squeeze out so high of a framerate without sacrificing quality, and no, Xbox runs games at 1080p. So go jump off a cliff, would you kindly.

And you think uncharted had great anything? The graphics were a joke - they were pretty, but there was nothing remotely complex about them compared to any other console game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You should also bear in mind that games are 99% of the time made for consoles before being ported to the PC, so the optimisation they go through to run decently on a console massively benefits PC owners. 20 years ago us PC owners just got told to upgrade to the latest gfx card to have a better experience - consoles, have seriously made devs work hard to make the best of crappy hardware. You wouldnt have simple things like streaming maps if it wasnt for the limitations of consoles, so have a little respect. Devs work to the lowest common denominator - the lower, the better.

@mattcake @MonstaTruk

That's a misconception that PC fanboys love to use when complaining about bad PC ports. All games are made on PC's and then exported to the various dev kits for optimisation on the target platform. Think about it logically. A game studio has hundreds of people working on the game, yet they only have 3 or 4 dev kits.

The programmers and artists are all working on PC's networked together will all the high res game assets delivered by a server. Only the guys doing optimisation research and final optimisation are using the dev kits. The master game engine will be running on high spec PC's, not the target platform hardware.

The reason why some PC ports are crap is because players don't all have the same PC hardware setup as the studio, so the devs have to make a composite version that is trying to be compatible with as many as possible. That is an impossible task due to all the variables they have to deal with, so you get bugs and hardware glitches.

That very reason is why the optimised closed system used by consoles is such a stable platform and can squeeze so much power out of less powerful hardware.

If its a ported optimised version of the PC version (most likely), then it should look pretty good on next gen. Just because its a game that came out on last gen and remember, it was only like 8 months ago, doesn't mean it cant look just as good or better than any next gen launch title.

I apologize, the first dictionary I checked didn't have "spelt" listed under "spell", but several others did, so I was a bit hasty with my comment.

Perhaps it's a regional thing, like faerie or colour in the UK, as opposed to fairy or color in the US.

I can't say I noticed much of a difference in graphics from the trailer, but maybe that is because the game looked so great already. However, that $60 price tag is perhaps too much. I think $40 might have been a more realistic price tag for this release.

There's just one problem; THAT is not Lara Croft.

"Attention, attention. We're looking for the chick with the big boobs! Huh huh, yeah! We are ready to do you now!" - Beavis and Butthead

And while you are at it, bring back the dual Desert Eagles. I hate what happened to this series. The one brief bright spot after Last Revelation was Legend, and then the series went right back into the toilet.

Yep this is horrible Square Enix. Milking at its finest people complain about a new AC and COD each year with barely anything changed yet this is 100 times worse Square Enix should be ashamed and as for you people buying this remember how you let the company walk all over you just like EA does.

While I don't think full price is a good price, it's completely worth it. One of my surprise faves of 2013. I'll be picking up this edition to let Square-Enix/Crystal Dynamics know they're doing a great job and I want more quality games like this from them.
