Now Playing: GS News Update: New Avengers Game Coming from Square Enix

Square Enix and Marvel have announced a multi-game partnership, the first part of which is for a new Avengers game from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and Deus Ex studio Eidos Montreal.

A trailer for the untitled project can be seen above, featuring narration from a mysterious character. "They say the time of heroes is over," a woman says. "That if you're 'different,' you're dangerous. But I know the truth. The world will always need heroes. We just need to reassemble."

The trailer shows Thor's hammer, Captain America's shield, and Iron Man's hand, though it looks like they all have seen better days. The tagline "reassemble" suggests they have been scattered. They will probably be brought back together to save the planet because they are very good at that.

"The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise," reads a press release from Square Enix. "Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come."

Square Enix has said more details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.

"By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, we are now working with two of the industry's most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced," said Jay Ong, senior vice president of Games & Innovation at Marvel Entertainment.

"The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix."

"Marvel's diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, including all of us," added Phil Rogers, chief executive of Square Enix America and Europe. "It's exciting to bring together Square Enix's award-winning development studios with Marvel's extraordinary storytellers to establish a new entertainment powerhouse. This collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their superhero dreams like never before."

The next Avengers movie is 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, which started filming this week in Atlanta. We will bring you more news on Square Enix's Avengers game as it becomes available.

A new Tomb Raider game called Shadow of the Tomb Raider is also rumored to be on the way.

I dont see this ending well. Not unless they get a big time comic book writer to do the storyline.

This is awesome news !!!!! Can't wait ! Finally we should get some good superhero games other then The Batman Arkham series. Lego Marvel doesn't count. Awesome developer's!!!!! Hopefully they are third person action adventure games! NOT MMOS

That makes me so sad. I hate the old super heroes troops, both marvel and DC and see great talent on both crystal dynamics and Eidos montreal, in fact is the best two studious of the once beloved Square Enix.

@ropumar: Yeah the superhero genre is like a blackhole of creativity. It's bad enough that they dominate the movie landscape to a nauseating extent these days.

I hope this is a real game and not some story driven adventure game like Tell Tale is doing to the poor Guardian of the Galaxy. I don't know I won't get my hopes up until we see some gameplay of some sorts.

I'm curious, but sounds like they announced way too soon as usual. Now we get years of speculations & rumours.

Cool, I like these devs. Hopefully they put together something fun and dynamic. 3rd person would be ideal but lets see what they make.

Kind of a waste of talented studios. We don't have any shortage of Marvel media to consume. I would rather they work on new IPs or their established game franchises.

Avatar image for knightsofdarkness2

@BassMan: We've yet to get a Marvel game on the level of the first 3 Arkham games. I'd rather have a good developer working on a respected and popular IP such as Marvel with untapped potential than a new IP no one gives a **** about.

@knightsofdarkness2: It's really hard to imagine how an Avengers game could compete against the intimacy and mood of Arkham. These guys are so unevenly powered some having flight and some merely punching skills. Ultimate Alliance/Marvel Heroes/Lego is one of the very few genres that could make it work, and that's by severely limiting what characters like Iron Man and Thor can do.

Though Ultimate Alliance 3 wouldn't be a bad thing. Though if it's like MUA2 then I think I'd rather take the new Deus Ex or something brand new

Avatar image for knightsofdarkness2
knightsofdarkness2

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Iron Man isn't actually that OP, and Thor and Hulk could be balanced pretty easily. Yes, Hawkeye and Black Widow would be completely useless but just swap them out with guys like Black Panther and Vision.

I want an open world game with RPG and even stealth mechanics where you can switch between the Avengers characters freely like in GTA 5, all of them with different attributes, side quests, skill trees etc. I don't want another MUA game TBH.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@knightsofdarkness2: Could work... but everything from Iron Man to Superman Returns to Hulk Ultimate Destruction to... Superman 64 that have tried open world superhero action have failed pretty bad. Sure Hulk was fun but it was still extremely shallow, the talent of Deus Ex dev would be totally wasted.

I think Iron Man could work pretty well with the rags to riches gameplay. You start as Tony who is just Tony, but then you unlock your first repulsor, then gain some armor... like Path of Neo or Batman to lesser extent. That way we get 10-20 hours of fun progressive gameplay and only in the end we would be the Tony who has supersonic flight and seeking nuclear bombs. And from there on we could just fly around repeatedly kicking Mandarin's, MODOK's and Living Laser's ass as they terrorize NYC.

But since they are going to do this game I guess we see what they do and how good will it be.

@knightsofdarkness2: There is too much Marvel shit as it is. It has become stale. I want more variety and not so much exposure to the same shit over and over. Now they have tied up 2 good studios who could be working on other content. All in the interest of making money while offering more of the same.

Avatar image for knightsofdarkness2
knightsofdarkness2

@BassMan: What Marvel shit? The last semi-notable Marvel game was Lego Marvel Superheroes and that came out almost 4 years ago. Lmao

Again, we have never received an actual Avengers game on the level of the Arkham stuff, or any Avengers/Marvel related game that's actually worth a damn in the past 7 years. If you don't like Marvel, that's fine, but why you're acting as if we get good Marvel games 24/7 to the point it becomes stale is beyond me.

Avatar image for BassMan

@knightsofdarkness2: Marvel shit is everywhere. Movies, TV, comics, games. It is ridiculous. They barely make any big budget action movies like they used to because studio budgets go towards these super hero movies. I like these movies, but there are too many of them. I don't want the same thing to happen to games. I don't want talented studios being tied up with the same thing that we are exposed to everywhere. We need more diversity in our media. That is my point.

Avatar image for straightcur

@Daian: Not necessarily. Could be like their movie universe where they have multiple titles that all tie in together. Here's hoping. I'll be incredibly disappointed if it's a multiplayer game and absolutely disgusted if it's an MMO

The new Tomb Raider games are actually pretty amazing and Deus Ex games are pretty good as well (I have both games for both franchises). The only thing that comes to mind is what kind of game are we going to get, it is probably and action adventure game with some RPG elements kinda like Deus Ex.

Avatar image for cboye18

I'm not a fan of the latest Deux Ex and Tomb Raider games; they're average games, not amazing. This could be another surprising hit like Kingdom Hearts was but the talent to make it so has long left Square Enix.

Hm, sort of bummed about this: Eidos Montreal? I don't want to play an Avengers FPS running at 20 fps (ala Deus Ex). I want to see the Avengers on my screen (3rd Person).

Crystal D? Great, if it was an Adventure game (ala Tomb Raider (copying Uncharted)) I guess? But that doesn't seem like it fits the Avengers.

For a great combat engine / AAA-level Fighter, Square-Enix, Crystal D and Eidos Montreal have zero competency in. :( Not good.

Maybe an RPG?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft try to purchase a year's worth of exclusivity, ala RotTR.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Lacerz: more likely $ONY would try to buy full exclusivity (or pretend they did as they have done repeatedly in the past) as they did with Spider-Man and Street Fighter V.

Avatar image for deactivated-5893d17ed65b4

@dlCHIEF58:

And Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Titanfall, D4, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break...and one year exclusivity like RotTR and Dead Rising 4.

It's interesting how Microsoft likes to move the goalposts when things aren't in their favor. Getting trounced in sales? Quit citing sales numbers and pivot to "user engagement". No longer able to secure profitable exclusivity deals due to 1:2 install base? Villainize the practice.

What I find funny is how the Xbots fall lockstep in line, despite years of supporting the exact opposite.
