Developer Respawn has confirmed that the broadly expected sequel its debut shooter, Titanfall, is currently in production.

Vince Zampella, the co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, settled any lingering questions about Titanfall 2's existence in an interview with IGN on location at the BAFTA Game Awards in London.

"I guess EA announced a sequel, so I could play coy and pretend I don't know anything about it, or… yeah. So we're working on a sequel," he said.

"No official name yet, but we're working on that. That's the main focus but we're starting up a second team and doing some smaller stuff too. Small, exploratory, taking it slow! It'll be multiplatform."

It means that the successor to Titanfall will almost certainly ship on PlayStation 4 as well as Xbox One, and likely on PC too. The original launched as an Xbox console exclusive.

Zampella, who is credited with helping shape the Modern Warfare series when he headed up Infinity ward, appeared to be unsure about whether the sequel will introduce a more robust single-player campaign.

"I wouldn't have done it differently," Zampella said reflecting on original's multiplayer-only approach.

"We set out to do it and it was one of our goals. I mean it obviously prohibits a certain group of people playing the game, and as content creators you want to get into as many people's hands as possible. We put some single-player elements in there though, and tried to mix it up. Maybe we could have mixed things up a bit better because some people blew right by it and didn't even see it because there was so much action happening around it. It's tough, because if you hit people over the head with it, it becomes intrusive, and there are people who don't want or care about it. Where does the needle fall? I think it takes a while to figure that out and we haven't figured it out yet."

"I think that's a fantastic way to do it," he said. "I think having the maps like that in packs, it does split the community and it makes it harder for matchmaking, it's messy. Yeah. I don't know we won't do it again, I can't say that for sure, but the idea would be to do something different."

People actually played the first one?

Avatar image for i_am_kesmonkey

@JIMDOG4442002: Yes, of course. It's a fantastic multiplayer arena shooter. Thousands of people still play it regularly.

Avatar image for JIMDOG4442002

@i_am_kesmonkey: Well considering that EA are known for wasting money so I didn't know lol.

Going multiplayer only was their only screwup and apparently they have no intention of fixing that...

Avatar image for orontheon

So BATTLEFIELD 5 should release by Q3 2016 and TITANFALL 2 by 2017(or who knows they just said that they are taking it slow..no one knows how slow). We have some good FPS action up our alleys in the coming years.

"The original launched as an Xbox console exclusive." Uhh, no it didn't. It launched as a Microsoft exclusive, aka 360, One, and PC.

Avatar image for MistaHardkill

@weapon_d00d816: "Console exclusive" - it's a term meaning that on consoles, it was Xbox exclusive. Just like Street Fighter V is a PS4 console exclusive. Console exclusives have been around for a while, and are different from just exclusives. Where have you been the last 3 years?

Titanfall is a good game. People like to crap on it because it one of the first next gen games, it didnt have a campaign, its small amount of players per match and the auto aim gun, but it did bring something knew to the table. The parkour and the playstyle of the Titans was really good, with the in and out of auto mode etc. It could be a pretty tactical game, just like PvZ:GW. The new maps added a lot to the gameplay and they constantly actually did tune things to make the game better. The thing that it was missing was a Titan grind. They actually should have had a big roster of Titans like Hawken that you have to grind your way up thru.

Maybe for Titanafall 2 they can add the Titan grind, a few larger maps with more players, maybe larger two-man Titans and more classes of Titans. More energy weapons.

so we're hoping Source 2 for this game?

First Titanfall was great, idc about modes. The maps were cool, the gameplay was unique. Now everyone copies off it. They will have to lead the way again with TF2

<< LINK REMOVED >> It was a great game, it's just too bad I don't see too many players when I get to play. I definitely would like a short single player campaign at least. I don't see how Destiny does so well, when there's a better game here. Sure, might be different genre's, but it's focus is on stupid loot that's made pointless in future DLC you have to PAY for. It wasn't even a complete game to start.

How did they go from Halo to Destiny....

Avatar image for gandospot

atleast Respawn learned a bit from Destiny's success.

Avatar image for regulator331

Destiny is boring.

Avatar image for gandospot

How original Titanfall was an Xbox exclusive lol.

Seriously, I can count the FPS that were really memorable on the fingers of one of my hands.

-Half-Life 2 and family (Counter-Strike, Portal, etc)

-Mirror's Edge

-Turok 1/2

-Perfect Dark

Not a big fan of the pehpehpeh...

Avatar image for eva02langley

I didn't even try the first one...

Zampella and others at Respawn have continually said that putting a SP campaign into a sequel would be going backwards. They've stayed with that and I don't see them listening. TF had some cool ideas, could be great, if they would give us a story to bind the world all together. I just don't see them doing it or it won't be very good given their comments post TF release and lackluster reviews.

These guys just don't seem to want to listen to consumers and broaden their game. Sad.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I kind of agree with them not adding a story. The bulk of the hardcore players only play it for pvp so the story is kinda wasted on them. I know lots of CoD & BF players that never even play the campaigns of these games. I'm not hating on campaigns just saying.

I think the way they did it in the original game could work if they fleshed out the style a bit more. Instead of just having say x number of maps. Make each map objective based and have the cut scenes explain the objectives/lore and maybe play thru the maps based on which side wins or loses.

The more platforms the better. PS4 owners missed out on a great game. It would be good if they get the sequel. I still love it to this day.

Avatar image for gandospot

<< LINK REMOVED >> PS4 owners are too busy playing Destiny lol.

Avatar image for rasterror

The sad thing I still have it. At least my son still enjoys it.

Avatar image for vadagar1

the game is meh ...me no like MEH

Avatar image for eva02langley

<< LINK REMOVED >> I actually agree, I have zero interest in that game... like Destiny.

Avatar image for rasterror

So don't play it and keep it moving in.

Avatar image for blackothh

make it 20 v 20 with no bots and more guns/mechs and maybe this game will stand a chance at not being a flash in the pan like the last one.

"I wouldn't have done it differently,"

Hindsight is the most valuble tool a game developer has and they want to play stupid....

Avatar image for cboye18

Sigh.... It's like developers these days are like drones and are only capable of making one genre at a time. All these generic FPS ( COD, BF, Titanfall, Killzone, Crysis, Metro, Halo, Homefront etc etc) are becoming tiresome yet they keep making sequels with little improvements. Has anyone thought of making a quality adventure/ platformer game instead? Spyro and Crash Bandicoot could use some reviving.

Avatar image for tedlimert

It was a bad game, idea and design anyway. Still Xfail was able to get some buyers who have worst taste in gaming just for this game and it is lost too. More fails from fail box

<< LINK REMOVED >> we got it sony fan

Give me an offline mode with bots and I'll bite.

Avatar image for nousername66

6 vs 6 mulitplayer with bots, nah I will pass on this

Avatar image for gandospot

<< LINK REMOVED >> it is a great mode dude.

Avatar image for NTM23

It'd be cool if they separated the campaign and multiplayer, because the first is really only a multiplayer. I had fun for what I played, but once I finished the very lacking 'story', I was done. I'm sure if they made a solo play campaign, it could be decent. Oh, and while I had no problems, probably make it so it's not always online.

Avatar image for PlatinumPaladin

While I am looking forward to trying Titanfall, I'm not going to be all that excited for it unless they do fill out the single-player more.

Avatar image for naryanrobinson

Good news for PlayStation owners, but probably bad news for us PC gamers.

Doesn't really matter anyway, since I'm not going near Origin.

Avatar image for PlatinumPaladin

<< LINK REMOVED >> Why bad news for PC owners?

Avatar image for naryanrobinson

<< LINK REMOVED >> The more platforms something is on, the lower the quality, generally speaking. Especially when developing across runtimes like DirectX and OpenGL.

Avatar image for PlatinumPaladin

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Ah, gotcha. Didn't realise different runtimes would cause issues.

Now excuse me while I go and google 'runtimes'.

Avatar image for tiffanystarrxxx

If the reviews are good I'll pick it up on ps4

Avatar image for bradaustin93

I still don't understand why this game gets so much hate. Besides the obvious personal preference barrier, nobody has been able to give legitimate reasons to hate this game. I enjoy Titanfall after all this time. Am I uber pumped for a sequel? Nah, but I do hope it expands on what the first game does well. Maybe it'll sell better this time around and offer either a true SP campaign, or really beef up the MP experience. Either way, I'm on board for this franchise. For now.

Avatar image for domiddian

Because of the MS exclusivity. Of course Sony fanboys won't admit that, they just say it's "COD with mechs" or something equally as daft. That's why it gets hate. And it's the same for Xbox fanboys and TLoU, another truly awesome game which people hate because it's not on their system of choice. Fanboys = idiòts.
