Tiger Woods 12 opening-week tee time draws 225,000

EA trumpets franchise-best seven-day sales for Augusta National-set, Masters-themed golf simulation; digital revenue up 200%.

Electronic Arts scored a coup for its latest edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour, landing the rights to re-create the famous Augusta National golf course in a game devoted to its signature event, The Masters. As it would turn out, opening up that exclusive club, even in a digitized way, has caught the eye of many a golf gamer, as EA announced today record first-week sales for the Tiger Woods franchise.

Augusta National was the main character this season.
Augusta National was the main character this season.

Going off EA's internal estimates, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters sold to consumers about 225,000 units in North America during the seven days following its March 29 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. That figure trumps previous record holder Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, which was released in 2007, by 17 percent.

Those increased sales have equated to a boon in digital revenue, as well. According to EA, virtual goods sales are up 200 percent over last year. EA also found success with the digital editions of the game released through Apple's App Store, as the iPhone and iPad versions of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 were the top-grossing apps on iTunes through its launch week.

Additionally, EA released a handful of marshmallow stats for the latest Tiger Woods. Thus far, more than 7 million games have been played, and console gamers have racked up online play time that equals 2,515 PGA Tour seasons. More than 184 million shots have been taken.

"Wouldn't it be cool to play the game during the event and have the game reflect the actual leaderboard? Something like that has to be the next step for sports games. Don't just show scores scrolling on the bottom like some games, but let the player in on the action." Thisi s in the game. you could play the 2011 masters with live scores from the actual event. They will have this for all the tournaments throughout the year

@SolidTy Well, that whole Tiger Fiasco didn't affect sales, so I guess it's safe to say..Tiger's back! ******************************************************* He played very well at the Master last week. Had a great front 9, but couldn't get the birdies going on the back 9. Still a valiant effort and he was in the lead at one point. Looks like his game is coming back. I own Tiger 10 & 11. I wish they could have combined these 2 games together. In Tiger 10 I didn't care much for the Haney practice sessions after each round of golf. I did like the Career mode. Game was too easy though. Tiger 11 is more challenging, which I love. Getting mammoth scores of -12 and -13 in a round isn't as easy in this game. Putts are harder this time around. Fairway eagles don't happen as much as they did in Tiger 09 & 10. Eventually, I'll get the Master 12, but I'm going to wait for price drop. If I'm going to have to pay another $25 for the extra courses, I'm not getting the game until it's priced below $35.

'10 was the best one and Wii still remains the supreme golf sim experience despite the lacking of graphics.

I hadn't played a Tiger Woods game since 08, and had no interest in any future installments. I just got burnt out. But when I found out that The Masters were involved with this one, I decided to give it another go. I must say that it is an excellent version of the game. I even payed for all the extra courses. I'd even go as far a saying that it is a collection worthy game. IMO

I never hated Tiger Woods for the whole relationship scandal, yeah it was messed up, but lets leave that for the folks that love celebrity gossip. I love Tiger because he is a beast of a player and I know that he will pick it back up on the real green soon. It's nice to see that sales are doing well though :)

What is this nonsense? Isn't this supposed to be a dating sim where the goal is to have affairs with as many chicks as possible (1 for every woman that you score) and you lose when your wife finds out?

First tried Tiger Woods back in 08, was very surprised at how much fun and seriously addicting it was. Followed the series since, but started to lose interest. Introducing The Masters was the perfect way to reignite interest in someone like myself. Good move.

@blackace "I'm still wondering when the XBox 360 & Wii Collectors Edition version are going to be released. It's only for the PS3 right now, which includes 5 extra courses." Not sure why you would need a "Wii Collector's" edition. The PS3 and 360 version has 14 courses and trhe PS3 "collector's edition" has 19 (IE: 5 more) but the Wii version already has 23 courses...

I had just been replaying my copy of Tiger Woods 09 in honor of Master week. I'd love to finally be able to play the most iconic course in golf, but can't see myself paying $60 for it. Meh, I can wait for the price drop when TW13 comes out.

I'm still wondering when the XBox 360 & Wii Collectors Edition version are going to be released. It's only for the PS3 right now, which includes 5 extra courses. How come there was a Collectors for the Wii and XBox 360. At least the Wii gets some Mini-golf courses, the 360 gets no bonuses. The other problems is their are other courses in the career mode that aren't in the game, but have to be downloaded at $5 a pop. If you don't get them, then you get penalized in the game. What kind of BS is that? EA forces you to download their content just so you can play all the courses? F that!! Those courses should have been on another disk in the game or FREE as DLC. For that reason alone I'm not rushing out to get this. I'm still enjoying TW 2011 anyways, which is definitely better then 2010. At least it's harder and makes you think a bit.

Having the Masters was cool. Hopefully its not just a one-time thing. It'd be neat if future installments could further emulate CBS' coverage of the event. Get the rights to the music, more commentators, more actual golfers, etc. Get the Masters' sponsors to kick in if you have to. .... Wouldn't it be cool to play the game during the event and have the game reflect the actual leaderboard? Something like that has to be the next step for sports games. Don't just show scores scrolling on the bottom like some games, but let the player in on the action.
