Three Resident Evil Games Headed To Nintendo Switch, Release Dates Confirmed

Resident Evil's Switch launches are coming soon.

Three classic Resident Evil games are headed to Nintendo Switch in the near future, Capcom has confirmed. The original, Resident Evil 0, and Resident Evil 4 all have an Eshop release date of May 21.

Switch owners in North America can purchase Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 as part of an Origins Collection at retail, though it appears the games will not receive physical versions in Europe. Pre-orders begin in all territories on February 28; pricing has not yet been revealed. There's no word regarding any additions or changes to these versions of the games.

Nintendo Switch previously received Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Revelations 2, but May will be the first time a mainline title from the popular horror series come to the Switch. The original Resident Evil first released in 1996, and many of its successors are third-person survival-horror games, while others are more action-centric or play out in first-person. The 2002 prequel Resident Evil 0 and 2005's Resident Evil 4 are considered some of the best games in the series.

No Caption Provided

The franchise's most recent entry is a remake of Resident Evil 2, which launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in January. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our Resident Evil 2 remake review, saying it's a "stellar remake of the original," but as yet it is not listed for release on Nintendo Switch.

I've been waiting for a real portable version of RE4 for years now on the Vita so this is a no-brainer purchase for me. Now just give me Wind Waker HD on the Switch and I'm all set.

@bebopbebop: The Wii U version would have been better due to the second screen. Same with TP.

It's a shame that console didn't live long enough to get SS remstered.

I don't know what's worse at this point, Bethesda milking the hell out of Skyrim, or Capcom milking the hell out of these RE games.

RE4 has motion controls right? If not, the Wii version still holds the crown and no sale. Sorry but I don't buy downgrades.

@asnakeneverdies: The floating free aim crosshair of the Wii Edition is so much smoother than aiming with an analog stick and a laser sight. You could make an argument that it makes the game too easy, but aiming and shooting with the Wii remote is objectively better.

@asnakeneverdies: I'm willing to sacrifice that in exchange for the much, much faster/smoother aiming. Even mouse aim in the PC release of RE4 doesn't work as well as aiming with the Wii remote.

@asnakeneverdies: For RE4 they were a perfect match. The original control scheme was awful and they did improve it on recent ports to do aiming with the right stick but Wii remote aiming is much better, and the rest of the controls mapped well to that setup.

@girlusocrazy@asnakeneverdies: The Wii version of RE4 has the best control setup to this day and that's also including the PC release. Resident Evil 5 Gold with PS Move controls is the best for the same reasons.

@bebopbebop: Yes, I wish they'd keep that for the later ports but they took it out. Hoping since Switch has a built in controller with pointer support that they include the option, especially given the history on Nintendo's Wii as well.

@girlusocrazy: I disagree entirely, Girl. The GameCube version features the best control system implementation. I suppose the PC would be the ideal platform by virtue of the mouse. However, I've not played the latest PC version. The DualShock would be the right compromise between the WaveBird and Keyboard/Mouse. That's what I believe, Girl.

@asnakeneverdies: FYI the Wii Edition also supports the GameCube controller so you get the best of both worlds if you're a purist that doesn't like the Wii remote control scheme.

@asnakeneverdies: It worked at the time, but aiming and walking on the same stick feels very odd to me now. I would choose Wii pointer over mouse as well. You still can't strafe in RE4 so you wouldn't be turning around with the mouse, only aim. Dualshock still feels odd for the same reason. The PC version is terrible besides. Worse textures than the PS4 version, no vsync (and if you force it then there is input lag), and the controls are terrible as mentioned above, it just doesn't feel right. RE4 is not a twin stick game and doesn't feel like one.

Anyway we can disagree, but I'll have you know tons of people agree with me. Why, only yesterday, I had over 100 messages in my notifications, and I'm sure they were nothing but back patting and compliments.

@girlusocrazy: I don't know, Girl. The Steam version appears to be the most popular one within the speedrunning community. That said, you might be talking about the original PC port, which did indeed suck. It didn't even feature mouse support from what I recall. ?‍♂️

@asnakeneverdies: Popular with speed runners has no bearing on the quality of the experience, it could be that it's simply faster to accomplish things or achieve certain glitches. Anyway not familiar but I personally prefer controllers to mouse and keyboard even for other games, I don't find a mouse and keyboard convenient for TV + couch play.

@girlusocrazy: Only glitchless runs are acknowledged by Serpent folk, Girl. That said, it's definitely faster from what I've read, on account of loading times. I've found that the Steam version is the most popular, followed by the GCN version, and then the PS4 version. And that's considering the XBOX version features the fastest loading times across console platforms. It may be that great majority are playing with console controllers. However, if that were the case it should be on account of the implementation, and not the input method itself.

@girlusocrazy: Well, within the context of the Resident Evil franchise, speed is a fundamental consideration for subsequent player engagement. However, it was not mine intent to universally establish that equation, Girl. Mine intention was to point out that Wii version controls were bad. And it makes sense that critters who replay games hundreds of times, would prefer the best control scheme implementations available, both for precision and comfort.

That said, I'm well aware that many consider the Wii Edition as featuring the definitive control scheme implementation for Resident Evil 4. However, I personally don't think that much thought is put onto that stance.

@asnakeneverdies: I still don't see the correlation with fun. If you mean objectively best for that sole purpose then yes, but generally games are entertainment so that comparison is neither here nor there.

@asnakeneverdies: I mean that version is fun for the speed runners but that's a small percentage of gamers. A metric that considers overall quality could be metacritic, which places the GC PS2 and Wii as the highest rated by critics and users, but for the purpose of entertainment and not for the qualities people look for in terms of speed running. But those scores were ones given during release and may not reflect how current tastes would apply to those games.

GameSpot has a thread: https://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/whats-the-best-version-of-resident-evil-4-26613316/

As does IGN: https://www.ign.com/boards/threads/which-version-of-re4-is-the-best.208098040/

Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/comments/7ee648/whats_the_best_version_of_resident_evil_4/

And I'm sure a bunch of other places. Perhaps you could start a new poll in system wars.

One, how many times can Capcom release these damned games?

Two, will the Origins games both be on the card, or is this another matter of accepting a worse version because portable?

Awesome news!

Wonder if this in any way is a sign that RE2 remake (an amazing game by the way.) may be making its way to the Switch in the near future. Here's hoping.

Wouldn't it be funny if they remastered all the way up past RE3 and to RE4?

Imagine a remastered RE4 in 2023. By then it'd be 18 years old.

The greeeen they would make from that.

@naryanrobinson: You mean remade, NaryanRobinson. While it's your prerogative not to construe every single port to a technologically superior platform a remaster, Resident Evil 4 has gotten that treatment at least once already. That said, I personally don't construe it as worthy of the remake effort.

@asnakeneverdies:

RE4 has never had a proper... even remaster. The UltimateHD edition was bumped up to 60fps which was nice, but apart from framerate it was just a few filtered textures and a config file edit. It was only a significant upgrade to the original PC version, which was a giant downgrade from the Gamecube version.

The Wii version had visual parity with the Gamecube version.

The PS3, 360 versions were pure res bumps of the PS2 version, which was a downgrade from the Gamecube version.

The PS4/XB1 editions did have remastered textures, but very lazily done, patchy, and they didn't go beyond the village, a.k.a. first third of the game, and were still based on the PS2 version.
