THQ forging Warhammer 40K MMOG

Publisher extends deal with Games Workshop to include a massively multiplayer online title from Austin-based developer Vigil Games; Q&A inside.

Video game publisher THQ and tabletop game publisher Games Workshop have already enjoyed great success since 2004 with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, the popular real-time strategy game based on the gritty and brutal Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi universe. The game has given rise to two expansion packs, the most recent of which won GameSpot's award for Best Expansion Pack of 2006 and remains a popular title with strategy enthusiasts.

Heavy is the cyber-crown of the future, apparently.
Heavy is the cyber-crown of the future, apparently.

Today, the two publishers are announcing an extension to their licensing agreement to work together on new projects, including a Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game. The first hints at such a project came last November, when Relic Entertainment, developer of the Warhammer 40,000 real-time strategy series, posted a want ad for MMOG developers. As it turns out, though, another studio--Austin, Texas-based Vigil Games, will be working on the new project, which should not be confused with the swords-and-sorcery MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

To find out more about the Warhammer 40,000 MMOG, GameSpot spoke with THQ executive vice president of worldwide publishing Kelly Flock and Andy Jones, Games Workshop's head of group legal and licensing.

GameSpot: Congratulations on the announcement that THQ and Games Workshop are extending their licensing relationship. What do the terms mean for the immediate future? What kinds of games is THQ now cleared to make and for which platforms?

Kelly Flock: THQ has exclusive, worldwide interactive rights for all systems, including console, handhelds, PC, wireless, and online, including massively multiplayer online titles. As you know, we have had tremendous success with our Dawn of War real-time strategy franchise based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with numerous accolades and sales in excess of 2 million units worldwide. We feel that Dawn of War's success is just the beginning for this powerful franchise that resonates so well with gamers.

Andy Jones: We are confident that THQ will continue to develop and deliver great game concepts that really bring to life the Warhammer 40,000 universe. THQ can do so on whatever platform and in whatever genre it wishes--after all, THQ is the proven expert in the field of computer game software.

GS: The two companies have also inked a deal to give THQ clearance to develop massively multiplayer online games in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. What specifics can you give us? Are there any time frames on the agreement to share? In which countries around the world will the game be launched? How true to the violence and grittiness of the 40,000 universe will the game be with respect to the kind of content rating the studios hope to earn for the game from the ESRB or ELSPA?

KF: We are very excited to be working with Games Workshop on the first-ever MMO game based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Our agreement calls for worldwide rights, so we definitely plan to launch the game across North America, Europe, and Asia. We are very early in development, so it would be premature to comment on potential ratings, but we plan to build a game that both Warhammer 40,000 fans and MMO gamers will be excited to play--one that is true to the rich universe Games Workshop has built--with scalable depth of characters and worlds that MMO fans have come to expect.

AJ: Perhaps a detail, but we have actually inked one deal that gives THQ the worldwide, exclusive rights to develop interactive entertainment products based on Warhammer 40,000 for all genres on all platforms. In terms of time scale, the agreement is intentionally set up to have a long enough term that THQ can really design and develop a top-quality, innovative MMO based on our long-established and market-leading Warhammer 40,000 property.

GS: Now that the deal has been signed, could you tell us about the status of a 40,000 massively multiplayer game? Is one in development? Has THQ found a development studio to partner with? Or would it produce the game in-house?

KF: Yes, we have the game in development at our Austin-based studio, Vigil Games. The team there is led by David Adams, formerly of NCsoft, and is comprised of several MMO veterans from that community. We look forward to making further announcements with more specifics on the game in the coming months.

GS: Could either THQ or Games Workshop comment on the type of massively multiplayer online game they'd like to create for the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Should we expect to see something perhaps more action-oriented or more strategy-oriented to reflect the tabletop game roots of the property?

AJ: The Warhammer 40,000 universe is a big place, with many exciting stories to unfold. It remains to be seen which themes are explored in the MMO (or indeed in any other up-and-coming games from THQ), but rest assured, they will be big ones! It may be worth pointing out that our goal is to ensure that whatever interactive products are created based on Games Workshop properties, that they, on the one hand, delight and enthrall our existing fan base and, on the other, give a wonderful opportunity for a whole new customer base to experience our worlds.

GS: Obviously, the current massively multiplayer online landscape is very competitive--Brian Farrell stated last June that, at the time, working on a game that would be "something competitive [with World of Warcraft]...would be misguided for anyone, including THQ." Tell us how THQ and Games Workshop intend to tackle the task of bringing a new massively multiplayer online game into this market.

KF: We think World of Warcraft has done a great job of establishing the MMO market. We have seen tremendous growth in the space over the past five or so years. That said, we believe there is plenty of opportunity that lies ahead both in terms of developing innovative new gameplay mechanics and continuing to expand the user base. Combine that with the built-in popularity and richness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and we feel very confident in our competitive position.

AJ: Actually, I think Kelly says it all here--we believe very strongly that the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property delivers opportunities for unique and innovative gameplay in the MMO space, and the fact that WOW has grown the marketplace can only be a good thing for all of us.

GS: Our next question concerns another Games Workshop IP that's already being used to create a massively multiplayer online game, namely Warhammer Fantasy Role Play for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online. Is there any concern at Games Workshop about creating a massively multiplayer online game that can gather a strong following without cutting into Warhammer Online's audience?

KF: I can't speak for Games Workshop, but based on the data we have seen at THQ, each franchise has its own, distinct following. Of course, 40,000 is the stronger of the two properties--I mean what could be better than a Grim Reaper beheading an Orkish Squiggoth?

AJ: Interesting question. Firstly, EA Mythic is developing an MMO based on the distinct Warhammer Fantasy IP rather than any specific game, such as WFRP. Secondly, Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 have coexisted as very separate and successful properties for decades. And our plans certainly see that well-established trend continuing forever. At the very basic level, Warhammer is our high-fantasy IP, while Warhammer 40,000 is science fiction--and our customers certainly cope very well with that concept. I have been at Games Workshop for 20 years, and I have never seen arguments about whether Space Marines or Eldar can take to the field of battle against Orc Boar Boys or Dwarf Trollslayers. It really is that simple.

GS: Aside from the intriguing news about a Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game, the news also begs the question about other titles, such as the successful Dawn of War strategy games. Can either THQ or Games Workshop share any thoughts on the future of Dawn of War as a continuing franchise or perhaps other projects that the two companies would be collaborating on in the near future?

KF: We are thrilled with the success of the Dawn of War franchise, and while we have nothing specific to announce at this time, we look forward to building on that franchise in the future. You can also look forward to more announcements from THQ and Games Workshop on other projects beyond our RTS and MMO plans.

AJ: To start with, I cannot say too much about how cool it is for all of us here at Games Workshop to hear Dawn of War described as a franchise! We of course defer to THQ in terms of its announcements and plans for games based on Warhammer 40,000. But the fact we have just signed a long-term deal for all platforms, all territories, all genres might just hint at a bright and glorious future for Warhammer 40,000 computer games.

GS: Finally, is there anything else either company would like to add in regard to this news?

KF: We are very excited to be expanding upon our agreement with Games Workshop; it has been a tremendous partner to date, and the Warhammer 40,000 universe is a treasure trove of content on which to build great games.

AJ: We are delighted with the care, attention to detail, and sheer quality that THQ has applied to the creation of Warhammer 40,000 computer games. THQ has been a great partner for Games Workshop, and this deal cements that partnership for many years to come.

THQ has experience with scif-fi. Mythic has experience with fantasy. GW isn't two-timing, they're being smart and neither company should feel slighted in the least.

@BloodyRooster: Not really; Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are two separate genres. Warhammer 40,000 is the larger of the two; it would be stupid of Games Workshop not to make an MMO for it if they made a Fantasy MMO. Otherwise they'd only be catering to the Fantasy fans instead of both Fantasy and 40K.

Horus heresy anyone? The third battle for armageddon? The Istvaan IV campaign? Eye of terror, craftworlds, hive fleets, THE ROCK (no not the wrestler), Necromunda Fenris Gorkamorka !!!! I have just messed my pants. Any and all of these would be awesome places to visit. I so cannot freaking wait. A univers with the depth of WoW or Middle earth and sci fi gizmos and guns that make the starship enterprise look like a fishing boat. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET How they should iomplement it: Think oblivion with guns. Hell-yeah BOOOIIII. Cant wait ta get shooty wid da boyz.

This article is aimed at Mythic. It's very annoying. Games Workshop is two-timing here and it could frustrate mythic. But I love mmo's and if THQ can do it, more power to em.

THANK GOD!!! I was excited for Warhammer online: Age of Reckoning, I was disappointed to here that it wasn't based on the 40k universe. Now that there making a MMO on 40k....YES! I personally love the 40k universe, with all its characters, and stories, and gritty features, and now its going to be and MMO...YES! Oh and Cruorem though you make a good point about the Tyranids, I hope they don't just make the npc's because they and interesting race. If THQ wanted to they could make them playable...though unlikly :( And Ekisom how the Hell could they use the Cryengine in games as expansive as an MMO? Warhammer 40k an MMO...YES!

Right all you people hoping for armies and stuff - THIS IS AN ONLINE ROLEPLAYING GAME, NOT A STRATEGY GAME! And for the rest of you who want to be aliens etc, think about how you'd do a roleplaying game especially for whoever said Tyranids - they're a hive mind, no individuals! Go look up Rogue Trader and get some history inside you. Or read one of the many novels that don't involve Space Marines such as the Inquistion ones. And look up Kal Jericho!

Okay this is for warhammer 250. It is not going to be a game where u have the ability of massive armies. its going to be single person where if u have rank u might be able to order small groups of NPC's. If u want to control a waargh then play dark crusade with a pop mod. It is most likely going to be a TPS, RPG, or even a FPS and pretty sure that it will only be on planets. I have read all the comments by people and like the comments by Raphal. As to my earlier comment about ImpG versus SM it was just plotting some of the weakest versus some of the strongest. People are welcome to comment on this entry i just felt like explaining things to warhammer 250

JuJuElite: agreed. Playing, for instance, a Tyranid Genestealer or Warrior would be insane amounts of fun (or, for that matter, a Carnifex - especially a Screamer-Killer - but that likely won't happen)

I think that you should be able to be any of the races and you could play as any of the characters in the hero section of the army list. You can then either go adventuring by yourself or in a group like in WoW or you can join a battle which would be the same as in starwars battlefront with different missions and stuff(Basicaly you would get hundreds of npc's on your side.) Perhaps you could get different point battles and a high level player would pick the army, or randomise it, or something like that

A little comment to you Neorart, it is indeed possible for spacemarines to fight the imperial gaurd even if they are both part of the imperium. When an inquisitor finds traces of heresy on a planet the space marines will be dispatched to deel fith it , the only way they know how. Bye an exturminatus ( killing every inhabitant of the planet).Even if there are imperial gaurd present on the planet. Just thought you should know.

As this game seems as only words and rumours, i doubt any work has really gone underway, its not really likly that this game will be released for beta this year, i doubt next year, unless ofcorse they've been keeping very quiet about the game, although the reasons for that would be foolish and make te game rushed so i doubt they would give it to us out of no where and realease it next week. therefore i bet there still designing how the game will work, the races all the sort of stuff you need to figure out before any coding takes place. but i bet that, being warhammer 40k it will be alot like Planetside though with elements of games such as neocron, where your not always in a fight, also these games tend to be very hard for new users getting battered due to lack of gear, and the gameplay is very similar throughout, with no real sense of achievement, after fighting a week long campaign against X to have a victory and a new one start elsewhere, theres also no ingame storyline which though most people dont participate in due to not wanting to and just wanting to "PWN YO NOOB ASS!11!" therefore adding a out of battle section to the game would be a good idea, like living in a Imperium city as a human (and i doubt the forces of order will get the space marines, nor disorder the chas marines if there implemented at the ver start of the game, due to them being a sort of rare ex human hero type) i doubt there will be pve as what is there to kill PVE other than enemies which you hope will be another player, and solid PVP never really works into a strong game. so lets just hope they can keep updating with press releases so we can figure out waht exactly will come of this game

Okay.. quick comment to what Agge said way down here: Just for the record: The Imperial Guard and the Space Marines are both part of the Imperium of Man, so them fighting really wouldn't make much sense in any case now would it?(Chaos Space Marines of course are a different matter alltogether). And a fervent prayer from me: pleeease let the Blood Angels be a playable Space Marine chapter in the game, somehow implement SM players being able to earn the right(bad choice of words) to return as/in a Dreadnought when killed in battle, and if so PLEASE give BA's the chance to come back as/in a Furioso(sp?).*drool* Hey, I can dream right?

Seeing as its an RPG, the lvls will be complicated. I dobt it will be like battlefront or any MMO out now. I think it will be a TPS, in a gears of war style. But i doubt the lvls will be as crude as Raphel says. I imagine it will be almost totally RVR (for people who dont know Whmr Online it means a collosal version of PVP, with minimum 100 people a side. SM dont go wandering off on their own so the game i imagine will be mostly huge wars. You will probably get wargear points for your efforts, and a career tree will definately be available (so cool 2 be a chaplain). SM will be very limited in number, but IG will have any NPCs under their control. I doubt you would be able to jump in another players tank whenever u feel like, but u may be able 2. As for different PVE/PVE areas, im sorry but its not going to happen. GW will make sure they dont make this into a cheesy starcraft type games as "In the Grim far future of the 41st millenium, there is only war"

I'm a hardcore Planetside Veteran...started playing 3 days after the game came out. Stopped playing recently because Sony decided to ignore Planetside and let it go to crap (n o perfomances patches for a long time)...I've been hankering for an MMO-FPS and had my hopes on Huxley...but this might be even better. I would LOVE to play a Space Marine. So much. So. Much.

They have just started designing the game, so expect at least 3 years to put your hands in the game (in a stable version). The question is "Blizzard also releasing a Starcraft MMO in roughly that time frame?".

I could see 2 possible ways for this to go: 1) It could be a shooter. where you join teams to battle aliens.. I don't know how good that would work. 2) or it could be an RPG based in the 40k world. I bet they'd have problems with Race balance.. since I imagine everyone would want to be non-human.. so they would have to give some big advantage to being human and some disadvantages to being alien or Space Marine. I've read alot of the books, and working in the Inquisition would be cool.. (like Eisenhorn or Ravenor) I think that would be cool. 3) another option would be to allow yourself to have a turn based army and basically have an online 40k, where you build an X pt army and fight any opponents out there. course since they called it a MMORPG.. it'll probably be 1 or 2

@Horus-Heresy I'd imagine some form of RvR will be a component in the game. Battlefields constantly under conflict much like the RvR content of DAoC. Like Col-Neil, I really hope THQ can pull this off, based on the great job they did with DoW, it should be little problem for them.

Per ryphals race suggestion, there should be different options for each race. For instance, you can be a Space Marine, Witch Hunter, Daemonhunter, or Guardsmen. Also, you can choose a warrior aspect for the Eldar, and Chaos can have lesser daemons, cultists, or chaos space marines. Orks would be kinda wierd, though. BTW There are some guilds in space marine chapters, i forgot what they're actually called though

But in addition to all that, I think for them to pull this off, it's got to be a TPS (come on, don't tell me you don't wanna run around and just stare at your 2000 pound ornate armor all the time, lol). Races will be limited to SM, Chaos, Eldar, and Orks. Necrons and 'Nids don't make a lot of sense. Also, not having a lot of races at launch makes things easier to balance, and leaves room for an expansion and more hype later in the life of the game. Even if it goes against fluff, I think the rank/class selection system would be the only way to make things work. Starting as a Scout, then at like lvl 15 you can become a Marine, then as you lvl the goal is getting better armour and weapons (sword -> chain sowrd -> power fist, or bolter -> heavy bolter -> plasma rifle). Then you can become a Sargent, then when you reach the lvl cap, you can choose to become a Captain or Librarian, or choose to become a Terminator. Another fundemental thing that would need to be done is a shift in MMO basics that people are hell bent on. For this to work, there can't be professions that a character has. You could make a Tech Priest on the side to build stuff, but your SM can't make things on the side for cash. I could see low level scouts hunting animals for XP or something, but after like, lvl 4, you don't gain anymore for small stuff. You'd then have to get XP from actual battles in PvP or PvE (vs things like Necrons or Nids, possibly a lone nest or a tomb that was recently destroyed and you have to clean up the remainders.) With all of that, I could see two different areas in the world, like other MMOs like the regular area and a combat specific one. CoH has PvP specific areas connected to PvE areas. WoW has the BattleGrounds that are comepletely sperate to the other areas. I would see the need for this for more complex battles. The standard stuff would generally be infantry and lesser vechiles that could be piloted by players with the right skills. But you'd need a battle area for things like Monoliths and Bloodthirsters and the like. They'd need to be NPC driven, or some newb might drop in one and start running over their teammates. Sorry, I've thought about this stuff forever, way before this was announced... Heh.. if they make a THQ forum, looking for ideas from players, I'll just move over there were my comments might actually matter to someone. The other thing I see that would need to be done is a great importance on grouping, companies (like guilds, but for the love of God, they better not be called that in-game), and bonuses for doing so. It's like the EVE commanders and their fleet support ships. They spend a lot of their training in skills that help others, more than themselves. So in my earlier example, you could go the Captain path and get lots of support skills like morale or RoF, or the Terminator that doesn't have those skills, but can solo squads of lesser enemies. Oh, and a final note, a cool but unlikely feature, would for the last option for a lvl capped SM, would be the next time he dies in combat, he can come back as a Dreadnaught, lol. That'd be so awesome... That is all... ^_^

Sounds awesome. Like Misterr_Psycho, I'm picturing an Inquisitor or Necromunda style game. I doubt there's going to be out and out battles like Dawn of War, since you're only one character. Things like Rogue Traders, Inquisitors, Eldar, Battle Sisters, etc. would make great characters. There's really no need to include everything right away, and besides -- Tyranids and Necrons don't make much sense for this kind of game. I don't think Space Marines have a place as a player character in this kind of game, though I'm guessing everyone will want to be one. There's what, chapters of 1,000? It doesn't make sense that everyone should be one, so I don't know how to handle it. Besides, Space Marines are supposed to pray and train the whole day when they're not fighting -- doesn't exactly leave a lot of time for fetch quests, does it?

If they do as often stated by many of the forumers a MMOFPS they will lose much of the future players because of the fact that not so many of them plays Battlefield or other related games...i think the best way is to do something similar to SWG before it was murdered by SOE.....IMHO i believe that the combat (PVP or PVE or whatever) to be skill driven not by the who push the mouse button first like most of the NCSoft developed games(Lineage , GW ,i don`t know about CoH).It will be nice to do agent based missions and quests (solo or in group) to gain currency ,status and items yet not to be left outside the "Crafting" element to make superior items with blueprints/recipes/whuteva + elements from mining/farming/raising sheep and so on. But i think(hope) they will find the right decision how to do their job to simulate the real thing fom WH 40K whenever you`re orc , space marine ,chaos and (why not) necron. If they do a good enough job to worth to pay a monthly fee i even consider quiting Eve Online if it worth it.

The thing that i really want to know is whether they are going to put in the specific chapters and their traits, and for the eldar how would you become the different aspect warriors. Following up on other comments, all of the races are army based and i'm really wondering how they are going to do that especially if they include Imperial guard because a guardsman versus a Space marine is a pretty one sided fight. I hope that it turns out to be a really good game however there are so many things that they are going to have to micromanage so can't wait to see what they figure out
