THQ forging Warhammer 40K MMOG

Publisher extends deal with Games Workshop to include a massively multiplayer online title from Austin-based developer Vigil Games; Q&A inside.

Video game publisher THQ and tabletop game publisher Games Workshop have already enjoyed great success since 2004 with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, the popular real-time strategy game based on the gritty and brutal Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi universe. The game has given rise to two expansion packs, the most recent of which won GameSpot's award for Best Expansion Pack of 2006 and remains a popular title with strategy enthusiasts.

Heavy is the cyber-crown of the future, apparently.
Heavy is the cyber-crown of the future, apparently.

Today, the two publishers are announcing an extension to their licensing agreement to work together on new projects, including a Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game. The first hints at such a project came last November, when Relic Entertainment, developer of the Warhammer 40,000 real-time strategy series, posted a want ad for MMOG developers. As it turns out, though, another studio--Austin, Texas-based Vigil Games, will be working on the new project, which should not be confused with the swords-and-sorcery MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

To find out more about the Warhammer 40,000 MMOG, GameSpot spoke with THQ executive vice president of worldwide publishing Kelly Flock and Andy Jones, Games Workshop's head of group legal and licensing.

GameSpot: Congratulations on the announcement that THQ and Games Workshop are extending their licensing relationship. What do the terms mean for the immediate future? What kinds of games is THQ now cleared to make and for which platforms?

Kelly Flock: THQ has exclusive, worldwide interactive rights for all systems, including console, handhelds, PC, wireless, and online, including massively multiplayer online titles. As you know, we have had tremendous success with our Dawn of War real-time strategy franchise based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with numerous accolades and sales in excess of 2 million units worldwide. We feel that Dawn of War's success is just the beginning for this powerful franchise that resonates so well with gamers.

Andy Jones: We are confident that THQ will continue to develop and deliver great game concepts that really bring to life the Warhammer 40,000 universe. THQ can do so on whatever platform and in whatever genre it wishes--after all, THQ is the proven expert in the field of computer game software.

GS: The two companies have also inked a deal to give THQ clearance to develop massively multiplayer online games in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. What specifics can you give us? Are there any time frames on the agreement to share? In which countries around the world will the game be launched? How true to the violence and grittiness of the 40,000 universe will the game be with respect to the kind of content rating the studios hope to earn for the game from the ESRB or ELSPA?

KF: We are very excited to be working with Games Workshop on the first-ever MMO game based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Our agreement calls for worldwide rights, so we definitely plan to launch the game across North America, Europe, and Asia. We are very early in development, so it would be premature to comment on potential ratings, but we plan to build a game that both Warhammer 40,000 fans and MMO gamers will be excited to play--one that is true to the rich universe Games Workshop has built--with scalable depth of characters and worlds that MMO fans have come to expect.

AJ: Perhaps a detail, but we have actually inked one deal that gives THQ the worldwide, exclusive rights to develop interactive entertainment products based on Warhammer 40,000 for all genres on all platforms. In terms of time scale, the agreement is intentionally set up to have a long enough term that THQ can really design and develop a top-quality, innovative MMO based on our long-established and market-leading Warhammer 40,000 property.

GS: Now that the deal has been signed, could you tell us about the status of a 40,000 massively multiplayer game? Is one in development? Has THQ found a development studio to partner with? Or would it produce the game in-house?

KF: Yes, we have the game in development at our Austin-based studio, Vigil Games. The team there is led by David Adams, formerly of NCsoft, and is comprised of several MMO veterans from that community. We look forward to making further announcements with more specifics on the game in the coming months.

GS: Could either THQ or Games Workshop comment on the type of massively multiplayer online game they'd like to create for the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Should we expect to see something perhaps more action-oriented or more strategy-oriented to reflect the tabletop game roots of the property?

AJ: The Warhammer 40,000 universe is a big place, with many exciting stories to unfold. It remains to be seen which themes are explored in the MMO (or indeed in any other up-and-coming games from THQ), but rest assured, they will be big ones! It may be worth pointing out that our goal is to ensure that whatever interactive products are created based on Games Workshop properties, that they, on the one hand, delight and enthrall our existing fan base and, on the other, give a wonderful opportunity for a whole new customer base to experience our worlds.

GS: Obviously, the current massively multiplayer online landscape is very competitive--Brian Farrell stated last June that, at the time, working on a game that would be "something competitive [with World of Warcraft]...would be misguided for anyone, including THQ." Tell us how THQ and Games Workshop intend to tackle the task of bringing a new massively multiplayer online game into this market.

KF: We think World of Warcraft has done a great job of establishing the MMO market. We have seen tremendous growth in the space over the past five or so years. That said, we believe there is plenty of opportunity that lies ahead both in terms of developing innovative new gameplay mechanics and continuing to expand the user base. Combine that with the built-in popularity and richness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and we feel very confident in our competitive position.

AJ: Actually, I think Kelly says it all here--we believe very strongly that the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property delivers opportunities for unique and innovative gameplay in the MMO space, and the fact that WOW has grown the marketplace can only be a good thing for all of us.

GS: Our next question concerns another Games Workshop IP that's already being used to create a massively multiplayer online game, namely Warhammer Fantasy Role Play for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online. Is there any concern at Games Workshop about creating a massively multiplayer online game that can gather a strong following without cutting into Warhammer Online's audience?

KF: I can't speak for Games Workshop, but based on the data we have seen at THQ, each franchise has its own, distinct following. Of course, 40,000 is the stronger of the two properties--I mean what could be better than a Grim Reaper beheading an Orkish Squiggoth?

AJ: Interesting question. Firstly, EA Mythic is developing an MMO based on the distinct Warhammer Fantasy IP rather than any specific game, such as WFRP. Secondly, Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 have coexisted as very separate and successful properties for decades. And our plans certainly see that well-established trend continuing forever. At the very basic level, Warhammer is our high-fantasy IP, while Warhammer 40,000 is science fiction--and our customers certainly cope very well with that concept. I have been at Games Workshop for 20 years, and I have never seen arguments about whether Space Marines or Eldar can take to the field of battle against Orc Boar Boys or Dwarf Trollslayers. It really is that simple.

GS: Aside from the intriguing news about a Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game, the news also begs the question about other titles, such as the successful Dawn of War strategy games. Can either THQ or Games Workshop share any thoughts on the future of Dawn of War as a continuing franchise or perhaps other projects that the two companies would be collaborating on in the near future?

KF: We are thrilled with the success of the Dawn of War franchise, and while we have nothing specific to announce at this time, we look forward to building on that franchise in the future. You can also look forward to more announcements from THQ and Games Workshop on other projects beyond our RTS and MMO plans.

AJ: To start with, I cannot say too much about how cool it is for all of us here at Games Workshop to hear Dawn of War described as a franchise! We of course defer to THQ in terms of its announcements and plans for games based on Warhammer 40,000. But the fact we have just signed a long-term deal for all platforms, all territories, all genres might just hint at a bright and glorious future for Warhammer 40,000 computer games.

GS: Finally, is there anything else either company would like to add in regard to this news?

KF: We are very excited to be expanding upon our agreement with Games Workshop; it has been a tremendous partner to date, and the Warhammer 40,000 universe is a treasure trove of content on which to build great games.

AJ: We are delighted with the care, attention to detail, and sheer quality that THQ has applied to the creation of Warhammer 40,000 computer games. THQ has been a great partner for Games Workshop, and this deal cements that partnership for many years to come.

It might look like a lot, but they were very tight lipped on the specifics.

i see it as being like a game wear your the leader of like a platoon or company or something and all of your soldiers are computer played, where your in chargeand you lead your company across battlefields on different planets. or you can start as a sergeant and as you grow levels you get upgraded in rank and can control more men. and the more money you make the better you can upgrade your guys and youself. then you can find other people with the same armies a or armies that could join togather normally in warhammer 40k. you can join armies and have a giant one or tons a of small ones.

How about you play independent characters? I'm gonna use Space Marines as an example here. You start out as a scout then you get points from killing enemies (NPC or PC) and after a while you can upgrade to a regular Space Marine and after that apothecary, chaplain, librarian or veteran Space Marine and so on. You wouldn't be able to attack your own race of course but both players and mobs of other races would yield points. I wouldn't like to see this as an extension of the DoW games, I wouldn't pay monthly for that just as I don't pay monthly for Hellgate London. However a FPS or TPS styled MMO would be cool as long as it isn't to much virtual dice rolling behind the scenes. More focus on the skills of the player less focus on what lvl you are. Well when it's finished look for me along the tau lines and fear hehe ; )

The only way i can imagine this being an awesome game is if they completely make their own genre. I have never seen an MMO with more than 2 playable factions before and I'm not exactly sure how that would work. I also cant see how they are going to deal with the massive amounts of people that are inevitably going to pick space marines. the last thing is the different army types, THQ needs to find a way to have all the different types of armies be different and distinct from each other. Otherwise they will alienate some of the fans. But if they can find a way to do this game it will be great.

Why can't it be set like necromuncda? Stay away from the huge battles and focus more on skirmish, in a hive? If they go with the big battles, then a planetside type idea would work, huge armies fighting, over worlds etc.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the (hopeless) possibility of the game being an MMORPS (role-playing strategy). Take what toastmaster said and build on it. In town and on ships your leader would represent you whilst everyone else is in the barracks and such, but on the field you would have your entire squad. The leader's class is fixed (force commander, librarian, commissar, priest, psyker, farseer, ethereal, shaper, warboss, chaos lord, sorcerer, necron lord, etc) but as your squads gains experience they can change to other troop types (a la Kingdom Under Fire). Say an Astartes squad starts out as scouts and moves on to tactical marines, then they can branch out and become devastators, assault marines, and eventually terminators. This way you still essentially have classes. You could buy wargear (apothecaries, chaplains) and special troops (frag grenades, melta bombs). I think vehicles should be used as pets, with their own special abilities. Squads and leader would have spells and tactics (just like spells and skills in any other rpg). Cover would be an important aspect of the game. Squads band together to form armies. All races would be against eachother, but maybe certain quests/instances w/e would pit certain races against others. This offers a chance for both pve and pvp. This post is already too long, but there are so many other ideas I have. Essentially it would be like playing DOW multiplayer and everyone has just 1 squad and vehicle with a ton of micromanagement options.

how bout u start off with a single unit and then can join squads later (like mini guilds) ? maybe up to 8 people each or something... but that would make it annoying as they would have to be an exclusive party and u cant really go on group things with other ppl, so ure group had to be online at the same time... i wonder how the game is gonna work, considering its not exactly the typical classes from other games... hmm, im SO HYPED FOR THIS !!!!!

I liked what ToastMaster_M had to say, but i would have to argue that some of the better players and players that had been playing for a while would have such an unfair advantage to other players. Such as in the game Kings of Chaos. There was no hope in getting as good as the top players in the game if you had just started, the armies would be too large.

What if instead of controlling a single unit, you actually control an entire squad that acts as a single unit, able to outfit all your squad memebers for maximum efficency for any given situation? Like, you pick a hero unit to lead your squad, then as you level up and get more money you can buy train more squad members, outfit existing members with wargear, or convert them into vehicles (i.e. the meber of your marine squad that dies the most can become a dreadnought, necron soldiers into destroyers, etc.) Thats how I think it will be done at any rate. After all, the actuall 40k game is based on squads and tactical deployment

As long as this game is and RPG of some sort it should be awesome, though to make it a shooter and a normal kind of rpg would be hard, i think if they formed it after gears of war, where you can be behind the character but then also shoot and aim up close would be a good idea. I also hope that atleast for the space marines they have different chapters available and what ever their sigment of the Emperor is, such as the space wolves, if you played as that chapter you would be able to have keener senses and know where other space wolves are, but at the same time have a weakness that another chapter has as a strength but has less knowledge of where other players are. And to relate it to WoW, whaaaghhh riders or space marine bikes, could be like mounts that you have to earn money to buy, and every expansion pack could have more planets to travel to, more races to add, since it is such a large universe and has many possibilites. Atleast this is what i think, post back.

I foresee these factions Good Guys- Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Tau, Eldar Bad Guys- Chaos Space Marines, Necrons, Orkz, Dark Eldar. Although, more realisitcally, it would be an all against all brawl. Thats 6 different factions, with exception to the Guard and Marines, both being in the Imperium of Man. How the game would play though would be quite different... I think a large scale 3rd peron squad based shooter, along the lines of Planetside, but there would be towns and major cities on the planets you fight on.

I'm a little worried because one of the developers is from NCsoft. Didn't they make City of Heroes and the like? Ugh. That game had a wonderful character creation tool but that was about it.

@holypaladin22 The reason for a change in developers is due to developer specialization we all agree that Relic makes great RTS games but when it comes to an MMO a team with proper experience in the genre would be prefared. To quote "Vigil Games. The team there is led by David Adams, formerly of NCsoft, and is comprised of several MMO veterans from that community." So we know that Vigil Games are more skilled in the Area of an MMO and hopefully will bring us a glorious representation of the WH40K universe in an MMO environment. As for Relic, I hope they bring us another Dawn of war expansion or perhaps even a true sequel? Heres to hoping! -Deadlock9

Most of wat im reading in current posts r good, but i dont want this game to be a tru rpg: its a pain to have to gain levels and experience points; thats just unrealalistic. i also want to be able to customize my character easily, maybe mid battle at ur hq or something. switch from tactical marine to assault marine to devastator to help counter ne threat. of course there would be checks and balances, but customization would be cool. close combat is hard in 1st person, so i say the view should auto-shift as u get closer to help handle close in combat (or u could just set it to player preference :P) either way, i dont mind the game itself being a fairly hi price so long as it doesnt cost nething xtra to play multiplayer (thats the whole dang point of the game) It would be nice to be able to organize into special groups of friends sort of like clan systems, tho the clan system has many flaws, a newer system could be revolutionized in this game. i would also want to be able to play as the majority of the most prominent races: space marines, IG, eldar, dark eldar , ork, chaos, tau, necron. nids would be hard due to their lack of individual intelligence and inability to swap weapons (they r grown on) and inquisition troops would be harder to balance due to the fact that they r generally stronger. all in all, i still say its a good idea all around. Go GW and THQ!

I reckon it'll be, most likely, like BF 2124 or similar with big battles or more like Warhammer Fantasy Battles (traditional Warhammer) Online with Rogue Traders (old skirmish game made by GW, very good but out of print) stealing alien relics on the edge of the Imperium and selling them illegally to other aliens and rich collectors etc. while dodging the Inquistition etc. Perhaps if a random character system was used like Star Wars Galaxies then players could be Inquisitors and their retinue (for those who play the "proper", as in books, GW games there's an 40k RPG coming out near the end of the year so perhaps it'll take ideas from that). And some Rogue Traders get Charters from the Imperium like privateers used to which allow them to legally go outside Imperial space and create fleets of their own. Another class could be Hive ganger (for those that don't know the background Hives are stupidly big buildings of several hundred miles height, looking like termite mounds, which hold the population of a modern day continent. The poorest live at the bottom, the richest at the top), Adeptus Arbites (think Judge Dredd) and perhaps Eccislarchy (think that's how you spell it, basically priests) members. Personally I'd prefer that because it's so munchkiny to want to play Space Marines and stuff like that, they should be NPCs. Too powerful otherwise. If you read the actual background and the rules for the tabletop game they differ cos they had to take a lot of stuff out cos space marines were nearly invincible. But anyway, that's what I want to happen. But I think we'll end up with a BF 2142 type game.

It will really be interesting to see how this turns out. As long as it avoids WoW style of play and leans more towards large-scale combat in war-torn cities and chaotic battlefields. Like Gears of War, but bigger. (Show em who invented the chainsaw bayonet!) Also Im expecting great character customization.

I say make it like World War Two Online. A Gigantic, virtual battlefield. Include Aircraft and Naval Combat in addition to just infantry battle though, even though I myself am only interested in being a ground pounder ;-)

Also don't make every thing about leveling up. Like in world of warcraft you can't kill something if your not a higher level. Thats dum. It should be like halo everything is the same its all about the weapons and how you use them. But put something that involves ranks. Oh and make more than 1 planet to battle on.

Please THQ, please please make it at least somewhat skill based!! Not like WoW... and make it appropriately gritty (to hell w/ ESRB ratings!) And one last thing... make it primarily PvP (not PvE) the WH40k universe revolves around conflict and war, so give us just that! War or battles on a big scale, with laser fire and tracers flying all around, artillery rounds landing all around.. you know just totally immerse the player in a chaotic war atmosphere. I know individualy player development is virtually everything in a rpg, but focus on said ideas about the war itself as well! I'm definitely looking forward to buying this game the minute its out...please don't disappoint :) Oh yea, and make a toggle available for 1st & 3rd person view... and include vehicles and mechs somehow... thanks!

Developing such a game will be a difficult task, but I'm looking forward to it!Nevertheless, I would really like to take one of my Brothers, a Space Marine, and start raining down holy fire to the heretics, orks, eldar etc.

To be honest the best chance they have would probably be to have it crossed between Warhammer online, star wars battlefront and Full spectrum warrior, That would give you rpg elements in a Third/First person shooter with detailed squad commands. the choice of third/first should be there specially as melee is always difficult with first person(so switching between the different views or all third person(its not THAT bad, is it?)). But 40K is all about squads with different weapons and tactics. Morale, cover difficult terrian will all be other issues that will need to be sorted to capture what 40K should be in a game.

What would be really great is if it were a MMORPG, but instead of one person you command a squad or even a small army, and instead of having levels and things based off numerical values (which is boring) combat would be based on tactics and skill (this also means even new players could stand a chance against people with no lives) That would make it truly great

Perhaps I have limited vision but...I cant see it being anything but a BF 2142 clone. I cant see it being an individualized rolplaying experience - the game game just doesnt work that way. What I can see is me spending a ton of money each month playing it regardless....I'm too much of a WH40K junkie not to...

I will hate them if it is anything less than a shooter. If they make it "double click on an enemy and your guy will shoot till they die" that's going to suck. I want: A good squad\commander system. Action NO AUTOMATIC FIGHTS. I've been writing a design document for a WH40k online shooter, basing it on cryengine 2. So I guess I'll have to start adjusting it to some different world *starts thinking up new races*

world of starcraft was an april fools joke of gamespot's last year, it isn't real(and if it was i would hope that blizzard would pick up starcraft: ghost aswell). calling someone a freak because they don't know that a strategy computer game most likely got many of its ideas from a table-top strategy game is a bit mean. it is easy to make the argument that even though warhammer was around first that the idea to turn it into a MMO was copied from WoW. I do agree with calling them stupid for calling warhammer online a cheap-knock-off of WoW, mostly because whenever WoW needs to make new content for itself it just makes up a bunch of stuff like "the new horde race will be a bunch off elves that have been sitting around for years in the same place but you only just noticed they were there." and "there are a bunch of bug people that were trapped in their desert lair by everyone and their mothers a thousand years ago and nobody mentioned anything about them until they broke out."

I hope the Warhammer 40k MMOG releases earlier than World of Starcraft. I hated it when ignorant WoW players labelled Warhammer: Age of Reckoning as a "Cheap knock-off" of WoW, when ironically, it was really Blizzard who was the knock-off:copied the styles, the units, etc. of Warhammer. It's just that they created a PC game about that setting earlier. If WoS releases earlier than WH40k Online, they(Starcraft freaks) would probably snipe and gripe at WH40k similar to WoW freaks with the upcoming Warhammer MMOG.
