This Is Doom's Reverse Sleeve Cover

The classic-looking cover won by a big margin.

62 Comments

Not everyone was thrilled with the main cover for id Software's new Doom, so you might have been happy to learn that the studio will also include a reverse sleeve cover for launch in May. id Software let fans vote on two options, and the winner has now been revealed. Check it out below, while the loser can be seen further down.

No Caption Provided

This cover definitely has more of a classic Doom vibe than the second option. That one was interesting in a different kind of way, in that it went with a darker overall tone and featured a skull and a pentagram on it.

People really liked the classic-looking Doom cover, as it won a margin of 68 percent to 32 percent. More than 62,000 people placed votes before everything was decided.

The new Doom launches in May for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. A beta will be held before launch, but information about when it may start has not been announced.

I don't care if they put My Little Pony on the box if the game inside is like the original. It's called Doom because the player is supposed to feel hopelessly outnumbered by hellion hordes. I want good weapons and level designs so I can Rambo through areas and look for secrets, not one more bland FPS. Doom 3 wasn't Doom at all.

Am I the only one that thinks that all three covers look incredibly amateurish? The pure white logo needs to go. It looks like shit. It looks lazy, especially when compared to the logo that's 20+ years older than it. When you look at the artistry of the gameplay footage, all that stuff in the background and the designs of the baddies... how can the cover look so uninspired by comparison?

32% of people don't know what a cover should be and shouldn't be playing games.

I think the winner should have been the main cover for the box art, with a reverse showing Doomguy on one side and the screaming Revenant on the other, maybe attacking each other.

Master Chief standing in front of a wall of pee (the walls after most parties)

Whoever came up with that should be fired (most likely a boardroom full of people who are clueless what gamers actually want)

Even this looks soooo much better: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/doom/images/2/23/Doom4Splash.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150615165506

And it's almost the same as the main one.

They should have used both of those covers and gotten rid of the main one

Also it's too bad the reversible cover doesn't have a second marine in the back like the original. At least it's got the classic Imp looking at you.

doom has lost it's individuality, it's kinda sad seeing a franchise that long time ago pretty much made the whole genre popular and spawned tons of copies and established the fps genre, now doom is trying to catch up, and even so, now it looks like this game is just a copy of our overly fps saturated market, where's the marine face? why did they took that out? i know people is going to be embracing the nostalgia, but honestly aside from the game name, its looking like everything else already done...

@Fia1: I completely agree. It seems Doom (IV) is just going "We need to catch up! Let's do what everyone else does! But with gory fatalities! And a level editor!". Granted, the level editor idea is neat, but... The reason people wanted another Doom was that they wanted the fast paced gameplay and tight yet open level design FPSes had 20 years ago, which sadly seem to have gone more or less extinct these days.

The main cover should be scrapped, it looks so bland and generic. Both of these should be the cover. Have the one that won be the "main" cover and have the cool black cover be the reverse.

@MJ12-Conspiracy: Yes, I am glad as well being the hype was so much about it being a throwback to the original and the one with the skull to me did not fit that as well as the one that was finally picked.

Back side covers are something I feel EVERY game should do.

I make a point to flip every PS3 & PS4 game that has one around.

The art is SO much better than the bland console branding.

It's pretty universal that the actual cover to the game is hated by just about everyone, but as far as retail sales go, it's a safe bet to sell copies. Much like Bioshock Infinite, there's been more than enough market research to show that people are more likely to buy games with the colors yellow, orange, and blue on them. Moreover, the whole "dude on the cover with guns/ knives/ face down, eyes up" is also another guaranteed sale to uneducated consumers. It's dumb, but it's proven market research.

@whalesex: Say what? I preferred this one by a long shot. The other one is good too. How can you say the cover that won is hated, when it garnered 68% of the vote and won said vote.

@whalesex: Besides, kids these days love games like COD and Halo so the generic soldier cover makes it easier for them to buy it (while my grown ass plays Mario and Pokemon).

@CallMeDuraSouka: Read my post above! The average consumer wants guns and a dude. This was a smart decision on their part, especially considering how few people even recognize the Doom brand these days.

@whalesex:

The thing that I don't understand is that the reverse cover catches your eyes and looks a lot more interesting. If I walked into a store with no knowledge of any of new titles and see Doom on the shelf with the official cover chances are I'll keep walking. I might pick it up and check out the back, mainly beause of the DOOM name, but I'll leave thinking this is just another run or the mill shooter. If I were to see the reverse cover on the shelf my eyes would be immediately drawn to it. It demands one's attention, it appeals to the vintage look of Doom, and it gives indication that the game is going to be crazy and intense. Overall just 100% more interesting.

@scottyp360: Unfortunately, you, myself, and the majority of the people here reading this stuff are not the audience they're after. That audience is the one that reacts to generic covers and creates revenue that wouldn't otherwise be made. The people who know the game ahead of time know they're going to buy it regardless of the cover art. Bethesda, Ubi, and a whole sleu of other companies know this and that is why they don't bother being creative. Furthermore, by having a competition like this, it incites more interest in the "hardcore" user base so it is a win-win situation for them. Marketing is something special.

@whalesex:

It just amazes me that there are people out there that decide to buy games based on cover art. I can understand it for young kids. I can remember being a child and seeing cartoon characters or superhero characters on a game cover and wanting to buy the game blindly.

But in today's age I don't know how someone, other than a child, could just look at a game cover (front and back) and then decide to buy a game without at least doing a little research. A simple Google search will tell a person everything they need to know about a game. I get it that certain covers will catch person's eye, I'm sure we have all seen at least one cover (game, movie, book, cd, etc) and thought "that looks cool", but buying said product primarily because of the cover is just crazy to me.

@scottyp360: I completely understand your point and it sure would make perfect sense to do just that for us Doom fans, but the problem is that the companies are going for mass appeal marketing. "Generic soldier with guns" is one of those checkpoints that drags everyone's attention (while diminishing those of the fans). It's the same thing to why publishers don't like putting female characters on the covers, as they are convinced that it will make a game sell less.

@cboye18: I can understand the point of not putting a female character on the cover. Sure it might appeal to a female audience, a key reason to why my girlfriend is into Tomb Raider is because of the female lead, but I understand a lot of boys and men will see the cover and think "I'm not playing a game as a girl!"

However I'd argue that the reason why "generic soldier with guns" or "male lead character with weapon" covers sell is because: 1. The majority of games with this type of cover are popular, highly rated titles (cod, mass effect, halo, Assassin's creed, etc) 2. The majority of game titles fall into this category.

For me I would just like to see some more art style involved. A game like Sunset Overdrive had the main character with a gun on the cover...but also had much more going on in the colorful, comic book like cover. It is definitely an eye catcher and I know when I see the cover I think "man that looks like it's going to be a blast to play!" I believe these games would sell just as well, if not better, if there was just little bit more creativity used on these covers. Publishers using the excuse "well statics show these covers sell!" Are just using a lazy excuse to use a generic, bland cover
