Thief Reboot Dev Responds To Rumors Of New Game -- "Forget It"

Eidos Montreal boss says the rumors may not be true.

The studio head at Thief reboot developer Eidos Montreal has responded to the rumors that the team is working on a new Thief game. David Anfossi shared a humorous picture today of a fake Thief 5 screen to shut down the speculation--it's not happening, apparently.

He joked, "Apparently we're developing Thief 5 game! So now we have a title... We just have to build a team, a budget... Forget it!"

Eidos Montreal recently celebrated its 10th anniversary as a studio. In a blog post celebrating the milestone, the studio revealed that development on Thief started all the way back in 2008. Eidos Montreal, which was acquired by Square Enix in 2009, also worked on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The studio is now working on an all-new Avengers game in partnership with Marvel.

To anyone who wants more Thief, check out The Dark Mod, or go completely retro and seek out fan missions from the original two (even three!) games- there are still new ones coming out now and then. I don't trust a game studio to really get Thief right.

@jj2112: Ah yes, T2X! I suppose I unfairly categorized that as a fan mission, when it's really so very much more, being nigh on a game (and a very good one) in its own right.

We don't want Thief 5. You've ruined Thief enough as it is.

The reboot was alright. Not great or anything, but I did like the guy they got to do Garrett, and the game opened pretty strong, had an interesting setup and good voice acting. But then the story kinda started jumping around without much explanation how it got there, and the open world city needed expanding on.

Really, I think they'd have had a better game if they'd focused more on fleshing out the hub city and creating side content to make it feel like a living, breathing world you could creep around in.

At least the guy has a sense of humor about it.

I remember seeing the first gameplay footage and I was just ... they didn't 'get' Thief at all.

They killed thief, first one was one of the best games ever made. So yeah, i forgot. Plus, we have better version of modern thief - DISHONORED. No Looking Glass, No Thief.

@fomalhaut2: I mean, it's not like Thief was alive prior to the reboot. It'd been what, a decade since Deadly Shadows when Thief came out? So we didn't really lose anything when this new one flopped.

Not surprised. The reboot was mediocre. Square just got their hands on Marvel and they want to take full advantage of it. Here is hoping for an open world superhero RPG or something.

@Barighm: Spiderman and there is another Batman game incoming. I don't mind more linear or semi open areas for a super hero game cause it would make it more interesting than just fighting in one city.
