These Games Are Now in the Video Game Hall of Fame

Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Doom, and World of Warcraft make up the first wave of inductees.

The first inductees for the "World Video Game Hall of Game" have been revealed. No surprises here, as classics like Pong and Pac-Man made the cut, along with the relatively recent World of Warcraft.

The full list of first wave inductees from The Strong Museum's Hall of Fame is below.

These six games were pulled from a pool of 15 finalists. Games that were passed over include Angry Birds, FIFA, The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Pokemon, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Space Invaders. These games still have a shot at induction to the Hall of Fame, as nominations for the class of 2016 will be accepted through March 31, 2016, with voting to follow sometime later.

Inductees for the World Video Game Hall of Fame include games that "have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general." A panel of journalists and scholars ultimately decide which games make the cut.

The six newly minted Hall of Famers have been put on permanent display at The Strong's eGameRevolution exhibit. For more on The Strong Museum, head to its website.

Do you agree with The Strong's Hall of Fame inductees? Let us know in the comments below.

Back in February, GameSpot editors revealed their own picks for games that should be included in the Hall of Fame.

The lack of Space Invaders is a huge snub...

http://www.toledoblade.com/KirkBaird/2015/06/12/Game-hall-of-fame-makes-huge-mistake-by-leaving-out-Space-Invaders.html

Space Invaders is arguably the most important/influential video game of all time... The Video Game Hall of Fame made a huge glaring error leaving that out.

Why would WoW be in it when Everquest is the reason WoW was made at all. Everquest is what started MMORPG for 3d gaming period.

Games should be at least 20 years old before they can be inducted. Would love to see, at some point when they have all reached the age requirement, games like Starcraft, Warcraft II, Half Life and a Commander Keen game in there.

Let me guess, a video game hall of fame run by people who aren't a fan of video games? Great.

I wonder if we ever see some of the multiplayed legends like quake, cs, sc or melee.

One thing that always kinda bugs me about stuff like this, for a lot of big games there are other games which preceded and heavily influenced those big ones, and they very rarely get any recognition. In some cases they could almost be called straight ripoffs which was common in the old "wild west" of the games industry, and as we are seeing now with the young mobile market.

I realize a hall of fame is more for popular games which had a big influence on large numbers of people, that's fine, I just think it would be cool to have like a hall of not so famous but important games because they played a major part in the existence of the famous ones, and have it get similar exposure. Of course some of the people/companies who created the famous games might be a little touchy on that subject :).

@hystavito: The only straight ripoff on that list is Pong. Atari was successfully sued for stealing that game from Ralph Baer. They actually broke patent law because Pong was completely an illegal clone.

I understand it had a lot of cultural impact and still holds a lot of significance, but an illegal clone shouldn't be given the honour of Hall of Fame status.

@saturatedbutter:If your gonna try and call PONG out, you should at least do your homework. It's not a clone, and it has every right in the Fall of Fame for it's huge impact on gaming history. You may try reading:

@darkelf83: it was absolutely a clone. They lost a lawsuit over it. the Law has literally spoken.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time should've been included. As should the games Centipede and Pole Position. Centipede was the first game to use the rolling ball instead of a joystick, and I think Pole Position was the first 3d racing game.

@pixipel: seriously? Pong gets actually accepted into the HoF and your dispute is with fucking FIFA being nominated?

Avatar image for Henninger

@pixipel: Agreed. No sports game should be in the finalist spot for the inaugural hall of fame voting. That's a slap in the face to all other great games out there. Overall though not a bad first group to the hall.

Talk about iconic games. A little bizarre that WOW is front and center due to being a popular MMORPG. Front and center? Pong! Doom! Super Mario Bros!

People saying Blizzard/WoW sucks are clearly clueless console casuals with no real experience in gaming.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter

@gameroutlawzz: It bewilders me why people complain about World of Warcraft being inducted and not caring at all about Pong being included. Pong stands out from that list more than anything as being a shameful entry.

Avatar image for otterbee

@gameroutlawzz: Honestly, if you're going to put MMOs into the Hall of Fame, I'm not sure why Everquest or Ultima Online wouldn't have been the first choices. I don't doubt that WoW may be worthy of nomination/inclusion, but to discount the importance of its predecessors? That's the main complaint I would have about WoW being the first to be put in there. That would be analogous to putting LittleBigPlanet in there instead of Super Mario Bros.

Wolfenstein, Resident Evil 1, Thief 1, Metal Gear Solid, Crysis 1, Halo 1, Diablo, CoD4 MW, Half Life, Counter Strike, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World they should all be up there.

They should've inducted games by category Side Scroller, Action, Adventure, Shooter, RPG, MMORPG, and so on just like wings in an actual HoF.

It's not that WoW created the genre- its that it's impact was so great on gaming in general. The iphone wasn't the first phone to do what it did- but you can't argue it's impact on every possible facet of society.

Avatar image for divinejester

wow definitely should not be on there. Its neither responsible for any major innovation in mmorpgs, nor is it even the best franchise from its own creator. I am not saying its not a great game, I don't actually mmorpgs, but a. you wouldn't have mmorpgs if you did not have rpgs, so I don't how they skip over that genre, and b. there are older series like Everquest that established the genre and WoW just built on their success.

Also Diablo should be in well before WoW in the hof.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter
SaturatedButter

@divinejester: Why does it bother you so much to have WoW in there when Pong was a significantly worse inductee?

Avatar image for notorious98
notorious98

@divinejester: First, nobody said it had to be an innovator to be in. Second, WoW has had unbelievable success for a genre where not one other game had more than 500k subscribers. Without WoW's success, it's likely there wouldn't have been a boom in MMORPGs at all. It made the genre popular, not the other way around. And, considering that 500k was the benchmark for success prior to WoW, it's absolutely amazing that the game still has 14 times that number playing after 10 years of existence. WoW has had more of an influence on pop culture than Everquest, DAoC, UO, SWG, or any of its other predecessors.

Next year Sonic, Zelda, & Oregon Trail better on the list. & Where is Number Munchers??? Or Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Goldeneye 007, & Wolfenstien? Hopefully these games will make the final cut next year.

All the other games selected are real classics, so that is great....

But did WoW really get a spot instead of LoZ? (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Avatar image for saturatedbutter
SaturatedButter

@metallinatus: Why are you complaining about WoW when Pong is was included?

Avatar image for metallinatus
Metallinatus

@saturatedbutter: Because Pong is a classic hit from the beginning of the video game era, not a 10 years old game that is absolutely nothing close to be a classic yet.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter
SaturatedButter

@metallinatus: Dude, Pong was stolen. It was an illegal clone and Atari got sued for it.

Avatar image for metallinatus
Metallinatus

@saturatedbutter: It was still a classic hit.... Windows too was stolen, so was the Mac OS, and that doesn't seem to be a problem to nobody today.

Btw, **** Gamespot with that stupid post limit.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter
SaturatedButter

@metallinatus: Were Microsoft or Apple successfully sued for violating patent law? Pong may have been a hit, but that's only because they were quick to clone someone else's work. And we're not talking about a part of someone else's work, but the whole damn thing.

and if you're having issues with the comment system (as most people are) I strongly suggest you voice your feedback here in the forums. They won't feel any pressure to change it from complaints in random comment sections.

Avatar image for metallinatus
Metallinatus

@saturatedbutter: If it was stolen or not doesn't change the fact that it was a classic, which should be the main focus of the so called Hall of Fame, going after games which became "classics" in the history of gaming.... something that a game from 2004 is definitely not. But whether a game is stolen or not is not important for this matter. It doesn't change the fact that it is a classic.

Thanks for the forums tip.

WoW doesn't fit there.

Zelda over Doom, but not because Doom doesn't deserve it - just think Zelda's a first ballot type of game.
