I'm surprised Splatoon sold so well. I do remember the commercials on tv, so I guess it was marketed a lot better than most of their other games. Good for you, Splatoon!

I have 35yr old buddy that loves playing Splatoon and Mario Cart online, he says most of the players are children or preteens and are easy to beat. Least that is less embarrassing then my Korean drama tv shows.

Only surprise here for me is Nintendogs and Luigi's Mansion selling so well. Or maybe, to think of it another way, that's illustrative of how poorly some other titles sold. (Poor Fire Emblem.)

So much Mario and related titles. As someone that's never thought much of Mario since they first played a Mario game in 94, I much prefer several of Nintendo's ips that have nothing to do with him or his extended cast unless it's Super Smash Bros.

Seeing as the ones I prefer also happen to be the Nintendo ips that currently don't do well or have had troubled, questionable or unsatisfactory direction post the N64 era, it's easy to see how Nintendo lost me after the Gamecube for consoles given those factors continued to worsen as did the third party situation. Meanwhile, third party support is the only reason 3DS is even an option for me as Nintendo barely has any self developed games I care to own on the platform.

When I look at my SNES, GC, GBC, GBA and DS collections I notice that I have very few Nintendo games for them and mostly have third parties. When I look at my N64 collection I see that even though I mostly have Nintendo games since major third party support was barely present on the system and it mostly had the inferior multiplats anyway, most of my Nintendo games are made by Rare.

With the loss of major third party support, Nintendo also losing Rare was a huge blow that they never recovered from and Retro Studios nor anyone else has ever been able to fill the void left by Rare's departure. I can only imagine how much more dire the N64 situation would have been if Rare wasn't there to pick up so much of the slack and at the same time, I can't help but wonder what a Rare in their prime could have done for the Wii-U.

Ouch, with those numbers I have no doubt Nintendo is featuring Zelda for NX launch

They're making well crafted AAA titles that are selling a pittance on Wii U if these are all time numbers. 3DS doing amazing tho

Lot of good games there. I would have liked to have seen Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors as well though. They'd definitely make my top 5.

@TheZeroPercent: It logs the play hours where? I have a Wii and a Wii U and I never saw any place online where it shows how many hours I've played each....

Also, where does it show the total hours of playtime of everybody in the world for each console?

@anytyme23:*Facepalm* Am I everybody in the world? Seeing how many hours I played does not tell how many hours everybody played. And try to read maybe? "I never saw any place online where it shows how many hours I've played" online is the keyword, ONLINE, you know, so other people could see and know how many time everybody spent instead of just how many the people in your house spent.

*Facepalm* You're lying when you say you're a literate person, because you would know what I wrote if you were.

I really hope that Xenoblade Chronicles X makes it to the top 10 but it would need to sell 1.75 million units. That would be pretty hard to do.

I so wish GS would stop doing the 'Sales Report' for gaming companies. None of us are stakeholders here.

Do you believe these mean anything? Yes, they do. They show companies what sells best, however it shows us nothing...
I sincerely hope you don't judge your purchase on the number of times it sold to other people, unless you really are a market-cultured-zombie.

Please GS, show that you at least have some other values to share with todays youth, than merely showing a product's weight in gold. Reclaim standards that mean something to all of us, don't rehash the standards the market is telling us to use.

@TheBruuz: I agree. But Gamespot reports news. It's up to the reader to decide what to do what the info. And regardless of your opinion if a game sells well it generally means it has been accepted by the community as a good game. There are many avenues to decide if a game is right for you that if you buy a game and get burnt then you have nobody to blame but yourself.

@fig56: "if a game sells well it generally means it has been accepted by the community as a good game"

This is exactly what I take issue with. This is an untrue statement. By this standard "Destiny" is the best game ever. It isn't.

Besides, I think it's any public forums duty to at least defend it's values against those that would take advantage of them. Meaning, that if GS doesn't frame it's values in a certain way, the market will do it for them, and is always ever so sublty doing so. You may be smart enough to see it, but not everyone is and it's for their sake that some of us need to take some of that on our shoulders, and eventually also for ours.

@TheBruuz: I understand but you must first take your personal opinion of whatever game being mentioned out of the equation. If people buy a game that they find later to be trash then it's their fault. It still doesn't change the fact that they paid for the game and added another tally to the sales figure. I'm not going to be nanny for the fools that preorder games or buy day one. There's twitch, YouTube, reviews, thousands of websites out there for people to make a informed decision in the games they buy. That being said at the end of the day a sale is a sale and that all these companies care about.

@fig56: I assure you that personal opinion was not equated in my comment, it's a very general observation and not only in games.

"I'm not going to be nanny for the fools that preorder games or buy day one."
Granted, you can't save everyone, but the overall attitude that we don't care about what other "fools" do with their life leads to having presidents like George W. Or maybe we shouldn't care about that either? Let's never complain again then, that nothing ever changes.

Wow, no wonder they are in 3rd place. A simple system to play simple games, its is what they do best and is why no one else makes games for them. But at lest they have their own little market and it works for them.

@brn-dn: Smash had two patches with just bug fixes, had some other few with just rebalancing and the vast majority of updates were primary to bring new content.

But I can't recall a single Mario Kart updates just to fix bugs and such....

@metallinatus: Mario Kart 7 had a mandatory update to play online because there was a glitch in a track where it let you skip half the course.

Mario Kart 8 had patches fixing stuff like switching the next race and view highlight reel positions after a race and they had a patch to get rid of fire hopping.
