There Should be a Star Wars Obi-Wan Movie or Two, Ewan McGregor Says

"The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!"

After Disney bought the Star Wars brand from George Lucas, the company laid out its plans not only for a new trilogy--Episodes 7, 8, and 9--but also spinoff films and character-specific ones. We already know about a Han Solo movie coming in 2018 and a Boba Fett-focused film may come later.

But could Obi-Wan Kenobi get his own movie someday? According to Ewan McGregor, who played the famous Jedi in the prequel trilogy, there is a story to be told about the character and he hopes it happens.

"I've always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness' first one," he said told French site Premiere, as translated by DenofGeek, referencing Episode III and Episode IV.

McGregor made it clear, however, that he has not been approached about an Obi-Wan movie. Still, it's an idea that McGregor said has a lot of legs and one that he would like to be a part of.

"It would be fun to film that story now I'm older," he said. "I'd be the right age. I'm forty-five; Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them (laughs)!"

Speaking generally about the Star Wars film franchise going forward, McGregor said he hopes Lucasfilm "explore[s] different genres" and stories.

"One of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two!" he said. "The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!"

McGregor's next movie is American Pastoral, which represents his directorial debut. Based on the book by Philip Roth, the film stars McGregor, Jennifer Connelly, and Dakota Fanning; it opens on October 21.

The voices of McGregor and Guinness can be heard in one scene in The Force Awakens. Guinness passed away in 2000, but Lucasfilm was able to use some movie magic to have him say "Rey" in the film.

Next up for Star Wars is the spinoff movie Rogue One, which comes out in December. The newest trailer was released this week--and there was a lot of new footage on display. Watch the trailer here and check out our breakdown of the key moments here.
