The Xbox One vs. PS4 1080p debate is an unwinnable war, says Titanfall developer

Producer Drew McCoy says getting worked up over specs is silly because, "that's a war that no one actually wins."

There's been no shortage of debate concerning the ongoing "war" between Microsoft and Sony in the battle for the living room. One argument that constantly makes the rounds is the fact that right now, more PlayStation 4 games run in 1080p than they do on Xbox One. In fact, one of the Xbox One's biggest and most important titles to date--Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer shooter Titanfall--does not run in 1080p. But the debate over respective resolutions between platforms does not interest Titanfall producer Drew McCoy.

"It's the console wars. It's Sega does what Nintendon't," McCoy told GameSpot at PAX East about why he believes the 1080p debate has gathered so much attention this year. "There's going to be games that look better on one or the other. There's going to be exclusives that look better, for whatever reason. And we never set out to engage in the tech war. I feel like that's a war that no one actually wins."

"We never set out to engage in the tech war. I feel like that's a war that no one actually wins" Titanfall producer Drew McCoy

"We consciously just decided that we're going to make a game that's fun and new and exciting and then worry about making it as good-looking as we can," he added. "And I don't think we made an ugly game, but no one in the office will tell you we made the prettiest game out there. Or [the one that] runs at the highest resolution."

Titanfall runs in the oddball native resolution of 792p, and because it's not available on PS4, there is obviously no comparison to be made there. McCoy teased that Respawn is experimenting with ways in which it can improve visual performance, but overall, he doesn't want to get wrapped up in a debate about specs. It's just not worth it, he says.

"We have more that we can do. We're looking at performance stuff on Xbox One; the PC patch added some stuff; and we're working with NVIDIA for some things on PC as well," McCoy said. "At the end of the day we don't really care. People were roasting us because we run at higher than 720p but we're not a solid locked [60fps] yet. And it's like, 'Yeah, well you know what, guess what? The GPU isn't always a thing that limits your frame rate and your performance.' So we hit the highest resolution we could without limiting the GPU."

Titanfall's first DLC expansion, Expedition, launches next month and introduces three new multiplayer maps to the game. Respawn is also planning to support Titanfall extensively with new modes and features--all of which will be entirely free.

Titanfall launched March 11 for Xbox One and PC, and came to Xbox 360 earlier this month. We'll find out how well the game sold--and how much it helped sell Xbox Ones--later today when the NPD Group releases sales information for the month of March.

I'd love to play this game.. Just to give it a shot. But I don't want to have to buy an Xbox One and I don't use Windows computers. So if it ever came out on PS4 or I won the lottery and bought an XB1 I would love to give it a shot. The resolution doesn't bother me at all. I've been a console gamer all my life and 720p if not upscaled from a lower resolution still looks great to me.

Don't forget that the cloud can offset certain processing function so while now 1080p is not set now it can/could be in the future as Microsoft updates the XBONE and gets the server system for the cloud updated also.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Software just can not make hardware more powerful, I honestly haven't looked into this cloud stuff much but it sounds like its supposed to be low latency streaming gameplay from one machine to another. I thought they already had some kind of stuff like that that failed I used to see youtube commercials for.

I could be wrong, I havent looked into this because it seems like a bad cheap idea, maybe I should give it a read somehwere, but it still sounds like a really bad cheap idea tho, people could just do that shit on internet tvs, I don't think gamers would care much for being cheated into playing a livestream, and you would need some crazy internet speed to get the latency to an unnoticeable and persistent rate

I already understand what the cloud can do. There is potential that has not been tapped yet. So while the PS4 now has 1080p native, who says that the Xbone won't have it in the future! The system is evolving and is designed to grow. I won't make any further arguments here on this because both systems are still new and have much growing to do. Also there still are no real games yet that take advantage of all that is on offer. Also my earlier statements were speculation not fact so don't be going fanboy here!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The 360 version is definitely a cheaper alternative than buying an Xbox One to play this game. I don't know though, I would basically be buying a whole console just to play one game either way and I don't know if I want to do that.. even though the 360 is quite a bit cheaper than the XB1 and could be found used for even less money.

I feel like the people that DON'T care about a NEXT GEN system's ability to simply run 1080p just have lower standards for gaming. I mean, it's 1080p for crying out loud!!! 1080p!!! We could be gaming in 4K RIGHT NOW, but you're just totally cool with good ol 720p. Do you also wear sweatpants in public normally too?!

@skinnyd69 right now im gaming at 1440p and i want higher resolution so i am more likely to save up for a 4k rig and a suitable 4k monitor with 120+ hz.I just cant understand how console players are fapping to 1080p and other who are content with less...its just sad.

I mainly play on consoles, but if my PC can run 4 screens at 2560, why the hell can't an Xbone run one at 1080.

Oh yeah - "eye candy", such as Anti Aliasing & Anistropic Filtering, are two settings that will bring any video card to it's knees. For comparison, consoles typically run 2x or 4X AA & AF

Drew McCoy sounds like a turd to me. Bottom line, next-gen games should not be running in 720 or 792 or 803p res in 2014. I game in 4K on PC, so having to drop all the way back down to 720p on my 60" screen on a so-called next-gen system gives me that unwelcome low-budget feeling. I feel like it's 2006 again.

I can deal with 1080p because it looks fine, but I notice an instant difference in the image quality in 720p on a large screen. McCoy's comment about not being interested in the resolution debate is the classic passive response for someone who is losing but doesn't want anyone to know that it's emotionally affecting them... "Who cares if PS4 has more 1080p games? Not me because I make games for Xbox One, so I'm not interested in a better resolution."

We all know you care, McCoy. I'll bet you go home at night and play the hell out of your PS4 while casting unwanted glances at your dusty Xbox One. Hypocrite!

I up-voted you not because you berated him, but because your argument is correct. The entire competition between NVIDIA and AMD in the graphics card PC gaming market is about performance. It is the significant hardware advantage of the PS4 over the Xbox ONE that is causing all the interest, especially due to the fact that so many Xbox ONE games are running at 720p @ 30 fps or thereabout. But regardless, the bottom line is that Titanfall is getting a lot of free revenue from MS so long as they continue to bundle it with the Xbox ONE. I bought the PS4 because it is a next generation console in both performance and features, and that is exactly what I expected.

I blame AMD for the mediocre hardware this gen. I'm willing to bet they were able to pimp each card out to the respective developer. They knew the power capabilities of each configuration and I personally think they cut corners and blew smoke up both MS and Sony's asses. I wish one would've went with Nvidia instead. Ultimately being that both systems are running AMD hardware is what im pissed at. I could care less about the specs. They both suck equally. I have both. I watch TV on my Xbox One and the PS4 hasn't been on in weeks. I had high hopes but I feel like AMD got over on us. Just like when they released that Buggy AMD Phenom and disabled the cache due to issues rather that pulling the hardware altogether. Next console better have an Intel/Nvidia setup come on Nintendo get on the horn with em and take my money!

I for one thanks AMD for rolling out R9 series, which force Nvidia to lower their 780 series by $150-200, then create the 780ti that is on par with Titan(non-black)

"I could care less" means you care some (since there's room to care less). The correct expression is 'I COULDN'T care less' which means you don't care at all, leaving no room to care less.

WOW all a see is bitching like a bunch of babies geez, who cares about who is better hardware or who has exclusives or this runs this DAMN grow up. You should play a game cause its enjoyable not because its in 1080 or cause it take xx ram an xx cpu to run it. I still play Final Fantasy 1 and up WHY cause its a good game not because the way it looks, though nice graphics are good its not a function needed to play. Most of you people expect to much and then when u don't get what you want you bitch an bitch to me that sounds like your all spoiled little brats.

What is everyone expecting with these new consoles anyway. It will be a good while until we can go back and compare graphical differences and that is what we will have to do, because the change in this generation will happen gradually. Games in two years will be bloody beautiful in comparison to what we have now, but we will have adapted to the eye candy. Differences in platform capabilities ain't going to stop developers from finding ways to make their games excel on all system.

The PS4 generates native 1080p @ 60 fps with power to spare. No upscaling needed. But the game developers have to update their old PS3 graphics software engine for all games to take advantage of the PS4's 1080p performance capabilities. In the case of the Xbox ONE, its slow hardware is causing problems, and that is why may games are running at 720p to 900p and 30 fps (frames per second).

Performance (TFLOPS - Teraflops), frame rate (fps - frames per second), and resolution (high definition 1080p) are all important to gamers. The ideal specs is 1080p at 60 fps which the PS4 delivers. The fact that the Xbox ONE is running close to 720p @ 30 fps for what was supposed to be a next generation console is unacceptable to most gamers. The 1.84 TFLOPS graphics throughput of the PS4 is 50% faster than the Xbox at 1.2 TFLOPS. There is nothing the game developers can do to change the impact the hardware design of the consoles imposes on them. The hardware advantage is the number one reason why the Sony PlayStation 4 gaming console is the overall favorite for most gamers. I would have paid $100 more for the PS4 just for these advantages, but to our surprise, the Xbox ONE turned out to be $100 more than the PS4. How could that be? But also the design of the PS4 is quite modern. The controller with its innovative Motion Sensor, Touch-pad, and Share button helps make the PS4 to be more appealing. The PS4 is the best example of what a next generation gaming console should be. Sony invested heavily on the PS4's hardware and it shows.

What GPU bottleneck? The PS4 GPU at 1,84 TFLOPS is 10 times faster than the PS3, and look at the awesome graphically rich games currently coming out for the PS3? The PS4 has 8 GB of GDDR5 ultra fast graphics memory. High-end graphics cards on PCs that come with 6 GB of GDDR5 memory cost over $500 for the card alone not to mention the cost of the PC. The PS4 does 1080p @ 30 fps easily with power to spare. If you see anything less than those specs on the PS4 is because the gaming developers were targeting a lower specs not knowing what to expect or they are using old graphics software developed for the PS3.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The PS4's 1.84 TFLOPs GPU is basically the same as the AMD R7 265 (also 1.84 TFLOPS) which costs $150.

6GB of GDDR5 is unnecessary, unless you want to game on multiple 4K monitors/TVs, which the PS4 can't do (the PS4 barely manages 30 fps at 1080p, no chance of even 1 4K TV).

That was major let down for about both consoles lets stick good gpu in them but "couple" them with mobile cpu that barely do 1.6ghz that tablet/mobile cpu just crippled the gpu, gpu is probably waiting on cpu. and main reason why 1080p is STILL a problem. by time next cycle consoles come around pc will be at 2k defualt if not higher while they will probably just be capable of 1080p, mean while we whill probable have 4k hdtv.

Console world been throwing 1080p and full HD at us since ps3\360 and there doing it again when current gen console now they saying it dont matter?.

Tsunami, the information you provided is in error. The PS3 games were delivered at 720p @ 30 fps and upconverted to 1080p. But the PS3 supports native 1080p resolution. The PS4 generates native 1080p resolution games at 60 fps. But the Xbox 360 was limited to 720p @ 30 fps, though it also upconverts to 1080p. You are providing misinformation.

No alot ps3/360 games where not really 720p and where scaled to 720p and alot the 1080p game where scaled up from lower resolutions to there is no mis information in there. they where pull the crap then that there pulling now which using a lower res and scaling up and calling 1080p, Scaling and actual rendering are not the same thing.

Supporting and actual be able to pull it off it 2 different things.
