@raven98030

The rumours could still have been true even if they are not in the announcement.

I hope everyone knows that the Nextbox will have a internet structure like Steam, where you will have to authenticate your games in order to play offline. That means if you live in a place with poor internet you probably won't be able to authenticate your games.

@Moegitto Oh, I hope it will have 100% offline support like the PS3 and Xbox 360. The Steam structure is a renting service, nothing more.

@Moegitto Bullshit, that was a rumor just floating about that is now pretty much absolute since info has been leaked regarding that subject saying that it won't be always online or anything like that because of those who don't have internet access. Peddle your bullshit propaganda elsewhere and quit being an asshat.

@Kakashi_101 @Moegitto Heard frpm Gamestop Manager it just on Dev kits, so stuff doesn't get leaked too early. Consumer won't have this.

Well you need to better then just Gears of War and Halo, Microsoft. By the way i don't need a media center console, I have a PC for that.

@Meta_Dragon A lot of people have PC's for a lot of things, but they also have Smart TV's, and other media boxes. Plus, you can counter that by saying, "I don't need a gaming console, I have a PC for that".

The always on rumor has been all but debunked at this point. http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/new-xbox-rumors-suggest-microsoft-console-wont-be-always-online-1C9310692

Microsoft's biggest market is North America, and we don't have the most robust or dependable online here, so I highly doubt this was something that went very far within the company.

So there was a massive rumor that the next Xbox would have some form of "always-on" requirement. GameSpot member Gallowhand said "Any console game that requires online authentication or constant connection will not see my money." Do you agree?

(I couldn't find a good Xbox image so here's Xbox Cat. )

@Synthia This "rumor" has already been pretty thoroughly debunked. As far as "online authentication", many of the indie games on XBLA already require online authentication to play (I've personally purchased a few of the lower cost games aimed at children for my kids). It's not that big of a deal. Can you play WoW, Rift, or any other MMO when the servers or your internet are down? No. There is a difference between "entire console requires connection to work at all" and "some games require connection". The argument about this (non-existant) issue conflates those 2 situations.

The new XBox will clearly not require a constant internet connection to function. Some games will, but we already live in a world of that sort, so what's the complaint? Just don't buy them. One cannot construct a decent argument against online connectivity requirements in general based on a few anecdotal instances. SimCity and Diablo server issues were, albeit unfortunate, temporary issues.

I don't think it's correct to read so much into a statement like Gallowhand's. Some folks simply aren't comfortable with that arrangement. But there are situations where such an approach is at least plausible if not justified (like your little indie game for 80 MSP using the XBLA verification system instead of spending the money and resources to code it yourself). Like most burgeoning trends in game development, it has its place and uses and is not inherently evil as long as its used judiciously.

@Overeduk8ed @Synthia As far as I can see I don't buy games like COD now for the single player. If my internet goes down I can't play those types of multiplayer games either.

If a game demands always online I will look at it and decide whether I want to buy it just like I would any other game.

The idea of the console needing an internet connection to run I think is so far fetched that anyone who realises Microsoft aren't a bunch of amateurs can tell you that they wouldn't do such a thing. They would be dead in the water by December was out, they must realise that, they pay enough to people to work out that sort of thing.

@SIDEFX1 @NbAlIvEr10000 Not sure if you knew what I meant..... the event was great; the stream quality was shit. The stream would freeze and the quality would crap out from time to time. They even mentioned they were having problems streaming the video live.

@Scalper Major Nelson has hinted that they will or at least I have reason to believe they will do to his response to SONY not showing their box.
