The Witcher Hits 10th Anniversary, Awesome Celebratory Video Released

CD Projekt Red's RPG series celebrates a milestone.

2007 was a wonderful year for gaming. It brought games like Halo 3, BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Portal, Rock Band, Crysis, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Super Mario Galaxy. Another game released that year that would go on to spawn a franchise was The Witcher. It's now 10 years old (!!!), and to celebrate the milestone, developer CD Projekt Red put out a nice video that shows main character Geralt looking back on his memories as part of a birthday party where people are playing Gwent, of course.

How many franchise characters can you spot? Check out the video below.

The Witcher was followed up by The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings in 2011 and then The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in May 2015--it was GameSpot's Game of the Year. CD Projekt Red released two expansions for it--Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine--and updates for the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are coming.

But after that, it sounds like the franchise is taking a rest.

The Witcher 3 was the last game to star Geralt, but there could be more games in the series without him. The Witcher 3 was a critical and commercial success, so The Witcher 4 coming to market eventually seems likely, though it surely won't happen soon. In December 2015, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski said it would be unfair to fans of the series not to make a fourth game.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on the ambitious-sounding Cyberpunk 2077, in addition to ongoing support for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.

I would absolutely love it if they made a Witcher 1-3 Collection for PS4!!! I bet CD Projekt Red could have a cash cow worth milking if they pursued this!!

@Jimbowesker: True, but CDPR seems like the type of developer that's more interested in pouring everything they have into their next game than revisiting one they've already done a masterful job on. That being said, I'd snap it up in a second.

Don't forget there's the Netflix "The Witcher" series in the works. It may help fill the void.

Absolutely loved Witcher 3 (+DLC), the whole series was great. This has me all warm and fuzzy and wanting to replay everything.

Give me the witcher collection with the witcher 1,2 and 3 for consoles I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm actually playing through the Witcher 3 expansions again at the moment. CDPR make every other major dev look lazy. All the details that go into even the little things that many would never notice or appreciate come together to make something truly special. Look at the detail in every costume the nobles wear in Blood & Wine... now look at the power armour Bethesda are trying to sell you.

Great video! We all love you, Geralt! And... Ciri too, of course ;)

I wish they'd remaster this game for current gen consoles. I have it on PC, haven't played it in years and would love to play it on PS4. They were originally going to put it on Xbox 360 and PS3 but cancelled it for some reason.

@capocrimeboss: Do you mean the first witcher game? That game literally had tank controls so it was probably hard to translate to a controller. Game probably needs a lot of work to make it console ready.

@gamingdevil800: @capocrimeboss: I was going to say the same. It played very differently to the second and third installments and I'm not sure that it would translate very well to controller.

I'm not even sure that CDPR would want to do a remaster, they are more for moving forward than looking back. Having said that it would be easy for them to second another company to do it for them. They'd probably jump at the chance to remaster a classic if truth be told.

@gamingdevil800: Yeah the first one. I read this on wikia regarding the 360/PS3 version: "On May 6, 2009 CD Projekt RED announced that work on the game is indefinitely suspended due to disagreements with its development partner Widescreen Games."

I wonder what the disagreements were about. More info:

@capocrimeboss: I would love to see CD Projekt Red maybe outsource it to someone to add new textures models etc and over hall the controls/combat but I think its unlikely. I enjoyed witcher 2 but I just can't get into the original game cause its so clunky.

@capocrimeboss: Too much sex, maybe.

This beautiful video sets a precedent of quality for the celebration of these kind of milestones, I believe.

I remember the first time I watched a trailer for The Witcher back in 2006. I was completely sold! When the game finally came out, it was so extremely demanding that I had to beef up my computer just to be able to play at glorious 20fps. By Chapter 3 (Trade Quarter) I had to buy a complete new rig, but spared no expense and walked the path with no regrets. Hard to believe it has been a decade!
