The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially announced by Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The game will be released in 2014 and will be coming to PCs as well as all other "high-end platforms."

No Caption Provided

The main source of inspiration for The Witcher 3 seems to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with Geralt's third adventure taking on a more open-world role without acts and chapters.

According to the GameInformer reveal (digested via NeoGAF), the world will be 20 percent bigger than Skyrim's and will take up to 40 minutes to traverse from one end to the other on horseback. The new version of the proprietary Red engine features new streaming technology designed to minimize load times.

Right now The Witcher 3's visuals are running on an old renderer that will be upgraded before the game is released next year. "Right now you see the game in the old renderer, but it's going to be taken to a truly next level," says gameplay producer Marek Ziemak.

The game's quests and narratives are being designed around an interwoven three-tier structure, with Geralt's personal plot sitting at the top and feeding into the invasion of Nilfgaardian and then into typical quests like monster hunting and crafting.

Monster hunting promises to be far more in-depth this time around, with redesigned enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies. Factors like the time of day also affect where monsters will appear and their abilities. You can learn that it is possible to kill a vampire in one hit by stabbing both its hearts simultaneously, for instance.

The game's skill trees, magic signs, and inventory will also be tweaked, with CD Projekt Red admitting that many found The Witcher 2's inventory frustrating. Spells can be modified and developed, with Igni now having a new flamethrower effect and also the ability to be transformed into a 360-degree blast.

The Witcher games are based on a famous series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a member of the socially maligned but powerful monster-hunting Witchers.

In The Witcher 3, Geralt's memories (he had been suffering amnesia in the first two games) have been resorted. The game's subtitle suggests a confrontation with the band of spectres known as The Wild Hunt, which are presumably responsible for Geralt's amnesia and are also considered an omen of death.

CD Projekt Red also says Geralt's barber will be available from the get-go, but there will be absolutely no chance of dyeing his distinctive silver locks.

The Witcher series has sold more than 4 million copies as of last summer. CD Projekt Red has been teasing The Witcher 3 since 2011, with the latest barrage of speculation coming last month, when the company showed off a teaser image depicting Geralt's sword. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's review of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 3 is not the only new game CD Projekt Red is at work on. The company is also developing Cyberpunk 2077, a new role-playing game set in a "dark future" where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

@templerun "Slender: The Arrival is a follow up to the highly popular Slender:The Eight Pages."

Yeah, right, that's The Witcher 3 alright...

It's so dam boring having to play the idiots over and over again!!! i'm hoping to have online entrys like a/place/door/path where we can be invaded/summon into others players world and be friends with them or kill them during a quest vs boss fight!!

I think this is a bad idea, sandbox RPG's are successful because of the flexibility of character design, for example in skyrim I can make a mage/thief, or a ranger/barbarian and i can give he/she any personality (and is thus reflected on the quest I take or the manner in how I respond to NPC). This is the power of sandbox RPG's and it's what all the best ones (Skyrim) do right.

The problem with making The Witcher a sandbox RPG is that Geralt is already a pre-defined character, he is opened to some diversity yes but he's still rooted in some concrete character definitions.

Just to give you an example of this, many moons ago when i was playing Marrowind I one time made a character who was a "wheeler dealer" I literally dumped everything into the personal skills and merchant skills and just went town to town building up a fortune. Was it the optimal way to play the game? of course not, but I was able to do it none the less and have an enjoyable time doing it.

Can you imagine Geralt walking around pawning off items, looking all bad ass lol. It really wouldnt work.

I'm all for another Witcher, it's probably one of my favorite series but its a narrative RPG, not a sandbox.

@Ancient-Hunter

They said it would be open world not a sandbox RPG. Think of it like the other games but much more open.

@SporkFireXPS @Ancient-Hunter Agreed. I hear open world RPG and think of Grand Theft Auto (IV) as well as Skyrim.

As much as I used to love big games, the more they keep expanding the less that simple fact interests me. These days I am more interested in focused, UNIQUE locals. Real estate doesn't mean much if there is nothing in it. That said, cdprojectred and the witcher 2 are both incredible. So I have high hopes for this one. I just don't see why it has to be bigger than skyrim. Skyrim is already ABSURDLY large. Concerns me it might not be 'full' enough; might not match the way the witcher 2 lived and breathed, particularly the city of flotsam and the forest.

@TotalWarHero i have faith in them. so long as the story is there I will be happy. Skyrim has almost no story. I think its safe to say you wont get bored like your in a hiking simulator. they are also making a lot of improvements to combat and the way the side quests work.

@CP2077 @TotalWarHero Lol at hiking simulator. Have to say, thats sometimes how I felt in skyrim. I think back to old school openish games like zelda, and realize they were big enough to be 'vast', but they were filled with different types of locations and characters. Now obviously thats a log time ago and a different set of rules, but I feel like many of these games need to aim at large, not ridiculously huge for no apparent reason other than awesome PR statements.

TW1 is not a bad game so I gave second one a chance, and it turned out to be one dullest experience I ever had in years, 40 hours gameplay in TW2= the character is playing me. how can one find this enjoyable?

It doesn't have to be 20 percent bigger than Skyrim, as long as it's not filled with soulless one-dimensional characters like Skyrim.

@isahunt I just posted a very similar comment, before I read yours. Sums up much of my feelings. As much as I loved the exploration factor of skyrim, at the end of the day I actually think it was a bit TOO big. Too many of the same characters, few of them memorable, and insufficiently varied environments. That said I loved it, but those were its shortcomings in my view. I say make it a third the size of skyrim. That's still huge, and then that way everything I do and everyplace I see is relevant, without fluff.

@moc5 @2bitSmOkEy Witcher 2 is a great game, with high production values, no DRM, has a decent price and every bit of extra content is free. Paying customers are treated with respect, which is very rare these days.

@petez34 Diablo 3 was delayed because of polish. The game itself was fucked because of early developer decisions.

@haedrianz @Sardinar @petez34 Blizzard may be going the way of EA. They used to be a brilliant game designer, but have sold out to profit hounds. Good thing we are not stupid as it seems these gold diggers think we are.

@Sardinar @petez34 d3 wasnt polished it was a piece of krap . a shame for the legacy of diablo. a one of the many mistakes blizzard are making lately ... making wowlike everywhere.... just check at the few npcs there is in d3 they didnt even take the time to add more than 2 sentences .... the story gets done into 10h or less ... 10 years for this... and no pvp.

well i love this company so i guess i ll wait and see .... witcher 2 was brilliant ! but i m pretty pissed that they go skyrim-like ... f skyrim ( it was a cool game but damn f it anyway) .. i want a witcher , witcher 2 >>>> skyrim , so why the hell trying to copy them... now a world that big looks interesting , but i hope they dont mess up this open world thing ... I have yet to really enjoy a sandbox game, it is tricky , it ends up being boring and unimmersive, with a lot of useless and unpolish things around, the pace is slower and it feels less like a movie/story but more like a mmorpg full of NPCs....... I was hoping for something more like a hybrid .... but anyway that said , we will see i still think they can pull this off really well cause until now they have proven their skill but..but i m a little disappointed for the moment.

@Rocket2Uranus Well, not knowing you that's tough to answer. But if you like RPGs in general, then "The Witcher" games are about as good as it gets imho.

My advice ? Get 'em both.

One thing I hope they change about this game is the itemization. Gear and weapons in this series is always pretty lack luster as they want to keep Geralt looking a certain way so all the swords generally look the same all the clothing is basically just color or pattern changes, etc. One of the big things about RPG's is getting new skills and gear as you go along and in the Witcher that's kind of a non-starter.
