The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially announced by Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The game will be released in 2014 and will be coming to PCs as well as all other "high-end platforms."

No Caption Provided

The main source of inspiration for The Witcher 3 seems to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with Geralt's third adventure taking on a more open-world role without acts and chapters.

According to the GameInformer reveal (digested via NeoGAF), the world will be 20 percent bigger than Skyrim's and will take up to 40 minutes to traverse from one end to the other on horseback. The new version of the proprietary Red engine features new streaming technology designed to minimize load times.

Right now The Witcher 3's visuals are running on an old renderer that will be upgraded before the game is released next year. "Right now you see the game in the old renderer, but it's going to be taken to a truly next level," says gameplay producer Marek Ziemak.

The game's quests and narratives are being designed around an interwoven three-tier structure, with Geralt's personal plot sitting at the top and feeding into the invasion of Nilfgaardian and then into typical quests like monster hunting and crafting.

Monster hunting promises to be far more in-depth this time around, with redesigned enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies. Factors like the time of day also affect where monsters will appear and their abilities. You can learn that it is possible to kill a vampire in one hit by stabbing both its hearts simultaneously, for instance.

The game's skill trees, magic signs, and inventory will also be tweaked, with CD Projekt Red admitting that many found The Witcher 2's inventory frustrating. Spells can be modified and developed, with Igni now having a new flamethrower effect and also the ability to be transformed into a 360-degree blast.

The Witcher games are based on a famous series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a member of the socially maligned but powerful monster-hunting Witchers.

In The Witcher 3, Geralt's memories (he had been suffering amnesia in the first two games) have been resorted. The game's subtitle suggests a confrontation with the band of spectres known as The Wild Hunt, which are presumably responsible for Geralt's amnesia and are also considered an omen of death.

CD Projekt Red also says Geralt's barber will be available from the get-go, but there will be absolutely no chance of dyeing his distinctive silver locks.

The Witcher series has sold more than 4 million copies as of last summer. CD Projekt Red has been teasing The Witcher 3 since 2011, with the latest barrage of speculation coming last month, when the company showed off a teaser image depicting Geralt's sword. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's review of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 3 is not the only new game CD Projekt Red is at work on. The company is also developing Cyberpunk 2077, a new role-playing game set in a "dark future" where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

Sounds cool. I've been playing Witcher 2 and while I do like it, so far it's been too linear for my tastes pushing you along a story-determined path.

@ggregd For a story driven game it's actually very non-linear. At a point the story branches, which then changes the entire second half of the game, depending on your choices (including locations visited, quests completed, characters interacted with, and story parts revealed)... so, yea, don't write it of as linear just yet!

They just announced at their website that it will be final game in The Witcher saga (not just trilogy ) . They said no more witcher after The Witcher 3 because they want to finish the IP on high standards (don't want to milk it) so people remember it in good words . It's good but also extremely sad because this will be the last time we'll see our beloved Geralt of Rivia :(

Sad Panda .

@PcGamer4Ever1 Oh well at least the story will get a closure. As a close reader and fan of the witcher series i got to admit the cd projekt writers did a really good script to concude the story that begun in witcher 1. They took an already interesting story and made it even better. It was a huge gamble and it paid off. That shows that companys who dont work out with only potential profit but rather as true fans can achieve a lot in this modern gaming world.

Please, I'm begging. Don't dumb it down (aka, consolize it) to reach out to "new audience" - EA style. Please.

p.s. Have nothing against consoles. It's just that a lot of PC games that went multi-platform lost a lot of hardcore elements.

@M-S-M-S TW2 was pirated 4 to 1. I doubt they trust PC gamers that much now. Low chances for no dumbing down. Not impossible but certainly not that likely to happen.

@Darnasian @M-S-M-S CDPR sold 1,4 m copies on PC and 0,7 m. on Xbox. Piracy has no real impact on the sales.

Do we have to keep throwing numbers at you?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PC_video_games

All I'm seeing are millions, again good luck with that piracy rhetoric of yours.

Oh, and here's a fun fact, Portal outsells the console version on the PC, according to Newell:

@PcGamer4Ever1 @slainta @Vojtass @Darnasian @M-S-M-S Sure! Diablo 3 has been the most sold PC game and all those other games sold more than it!! You PC guys really live in a parallel world. Look at PDA numbers. PC sales for games are crap. This is how it works. And if you don't trust me look at the number of seeders in the The Pirate Bay as well. Or all these people are downloading illegally just for the heck of it?

and starcraft 2 was also crackable and it sold 6 million copies . The reason because of which Diablo 3 sold so much was the success of Diablo 2 .

@slainta @Vojtass @Darnasian @M-S-M-S Portal 2 was crackable yet sold 8 million copies on PC alone . Sims 3 was crackable yet sold 8 million copies , Minecraft released without DRM and sold 9 million copies on PC . Your argument is pointless . They were aiming for 1.3 million copies for the witcher 2 . They achieved their goal on PC , console gamers who said "Bring it to consoles CDPR the sales are good here" are proved to extremely wrong .

@Vojtass @Darnasian @M-S-M-S Diablo 3 being online (thus not easily crackable) sold at least 4 times more. And please don't tell me that DIablo 3 is a better game.

Yep Witcher series saw more success on the PC than the 360, glad to see that CDPR always puts PC first.

@M-S-M-S The problem is not the consoles, the problem is this "Adapt to new Audiences" process in which each and every franchise is going through...

In most cases it's sad, because we like our games the way they were. But sometimes it can get you to like some franchises you didn't before. For instance I hated every resident evil that came after 4 (even though 4 already had its formula mixed, it had a flavor of horror and survival). Now I never liked Devil May Cry, I hate the japanese sense of humor, can't stand it. And I decided to give this new DmC a try, it's a solid action game, the japanese nonsense-B-movie stuff is gone, I really like it and Fans of the originals have bashed it...

My point is, you can't please everyone, and that's exactly what they (publisher pushing developers) are trying to do...

Although I've experienced good changes, I hated the ones to series I loved...

@sirvick @M-S-M-S But dont forget most games are not always ment to be played by all. Dragon age origins was really awesome cause it stuck to some basic hardcore gaming rules. When the game hit its sequel and everybody run to buy it, everyone panned it cause it was made into something to attract 15 year olds rather than games. All hated it except the console fans who enjoyed oversimplistic gameplay. Bottom line not all games are for everyone. When u have a winning formula changing it for more profits its most of the time a losing cause.

The person in hood is almost for sure Ciri. Strong spoilers for the Wither books below:

It just makes sense - The wil hunt is on the move agian, it tries to capture the "Elder blood" - which is in fact genes for planewalking ( crossing the worlds) Ciri happens to posses. The wild hunt are in fact elves ( "dark elves" but let's not go into that cliche too far - it is a world full of gray, and with a lot of trope breaking), who desperatly want to capture someone with the genes, as they got stuck in a world they "recently" ( it has been a long time ago) conquered and few nearby worlds ( the so called "spiral"), including the witcher's one.

The Emperor of Nilfgaard happens to know that too, so his armies are on the move again ( capturing Ciri and using her powers was his personal secret goal behind the previous war). It is only a question why Ciri has returned ( perhaps baited by the capture of Yennefer and Geralt, who were left on some world, between realms of life and death).

@innominatus2 Emperor is interested in Geralt because enhanced edition of the witcher 2 reveals that Geralt was also the rider of the wild hunt yet he survived . To get Geralt to solve conjunction of spheres theory they'll use people close to Geralt including Ciri . So yes that girl can be Ciri grown up .

'...enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies.'

Nice! This makes me happy. I like to see detail coming back into RPG gaming. The two biggest mistakes game pubs/devs have made since about 2006 is watering down story and detail in RPGs. It sounds like CD Projekt RED has listened to Gamers or actually are Gamers themselves. :)

They just officially announced that they're working on the game. Most likely we can expect an awesome trailer & gameplay footage at this years' E3.
I don't want them to waste time on hyping this game up à la EA-style so I won't complain if they don't release news about it every week. I'll just be smiling, knowing they will deliver a game worthy for a god!

*Geralt glares*

"....or not! Take this pouch full of orens my friend!!"

Really looking forward to this game, I just hope it'll have less bugs on its release than the two previous games. But still... CD Project Red is awesome with it's patches to polish it to perfection afterwards. Something to look forward too. :)

@GunEye size isn't everything, DD(one of my favorite RPGS of this gen) was big but empty it felt more like GTA without cars, you'll run for 5 - 10 min before finding anything intersting, TES solves this issue by making the world condenced ad packed with content, I hope that's what the witcher 3 will do....

20% bigger than Skyrim?

Dear lord, if they are not bluffing, we are in for a huge game. Skyrim was too big for me, and I felt lost in it and some lack of drive to continue, but this time around I'm in for a large world game.

If you use Skyrim or even Oblivions' Fast Travel the world feels alot smaller than Morrowind did which also had some Fast Travel but not to EVERY point on the map you visited. Personally I tend to avoid using it since it makes the world (and experience) that much smaller for me. But to each his own I guess.
