The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially announced by Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The game will be released in 2014 and will be coming to PCs as well as all other "high-end platforms."

No Caption Provided

The main source of inspiration for The Witcher 3 seems to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with Geralt's third adventure taking on a more open-world role without acts and chapters.

According to the GameInformer reveal (digested via NeoGAF), the world will be 20 percent bigger than Skyrim's and will take up to 40 minutes to traverse from one end to the other on horseback. The new version of the proprietary Red engine features new streaming technology designed to minimize load times.

Right now The Witcher 3's visuals are running on an old renderer that will be upgraded before the game is released next year. "Right now you see the game in the old renderer, but it's going to be taken to a truly next level," says gameplay producer Marek Ziemak.

The game's quests and narratives are being designed around an interwoven three-tier structure, with Geralt's personal plot sitting at the top and feeding into the invasion of Nilfgaardian and then into typical quests like monster hunting and crafting.

Monster hunting promises to be far more in-depth this time around, with redesigned enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies. Factors like the time of day also affect where monsters will appear and their abilities. You can learn that it is possible to kill a vampire in one hit by stabbing both its hearts simultaneously, for instance.

The game's skill trees, magic signs, and inventory will also be tweaked, with CD Projekt Red admitting that many found The Witcher 2's inventory frustrating. Spells can be modified and developed, with Igni now having a new flamethrower effect and also the ability to be transformed into a 360-degree blast.

The Witcher games are based on a famous series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a member of the socially maligned but powerful monster-hunting Witchers.

In The Witcher 3, Geralt's memories (he had been suffering amnesia in the first two games) have been resorted. The game's subtitle suggests a confrontation with the band of spectres known as The Wild Hunt, which are presumably responsible for Geralt's amnesia and are also considered an omen of death.

CD Projekt Red also says Geralt's barber will be available from the get-go, but there will be absolutely no chance of dyeing his distinctive silver locks.

The Witcher series has sold more than 4 million copies as of last summer. CD Projekt Red has been teasing The Witcher 3 since 2011, with the latest barrage of speculation coming last month, when the company showed off a teaser image depicting Geralt's sword. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's review of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 3 is not the only new game CD Projekt Red is at work on. The company is also developing Cyberpunk 2077, a new role-playing game set in a "dark future" where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

While I like this franchise I'd be a little more excited if this was Dragon's Dogma they were talkinga bout. :) I just picked that game up like a week ago and man it really was a refreshing game. Would be so great if they brought the sequel to the PC and expanded the scope. What they have is pretty great but it's obvious it wasn't a big budget project. Far as an RPG goes though Dogma is one of the most enjoyable I've played in a long time, counting skyrim.

Aside from the graphics though the main advantage Skyrim has over it is simply the scope and scale. Skyrim is a monster of a game that you can easily sink 100 hours into and still not do everything. Update the graphics on Dogma, expand the world and quest pallet and build on what they already have as a foundation and you'd easily have a triple contender.

That said as far as witcher 3 goes, I'm looking forward to seeing how they do the open world. Having a big open game world is great but it's only great if there are great things to do there. I loved Skryim, in comparison to Dragon's Dogma it's super huge but I actually had more fun in Dragon's Dogma mainly b/c the monsters and combat are just much more engaging.

If I buy a new hihg-end PC rig this year (2013), what.s the chances that a high-end game such as the Witcher 3 will still work fine on my computer?

I imagine so, but I don't have a feel for how fast the requirements for these games are going up.

Looking forward to the Witcher 3

@Andrak_Vol it probably will be fine.. witcher until now have been demanding since they push graphics to the extreme , and it s very beautiful games ... but considering it will probably able to run on xbox720 and all.. if you buy a solid computer, make sure you get what is the best ( what is the best doesnt mean u have to spend more that 800$ for a tower ) you will probably be able to run on high or ultra ..... my tower runs witcher 2 or any recent games in ultra no problemos and i bought it last year. and it will probably last a couple other years and more if i just change teh graphic card.

Witcher 2 had the best opening cinematics of any game in this gen of consoles I've ever seen. Plus, the writing was hilarious! Looking forward to finding out if W3 does the same.

People saying that graphically it isn't next gen.

They say in the news that the game is using the old rendered, explaining why it looks so much like TW2.

Don't underestimate the effect it will have on the end result. What we need is some more screenshot with all the bells on (even though it is still WIP). But thanks CDprojekt for taking the risk of publishing an early footage of the game, even though they know a lot of people will just look at a picture or two and start complaining.

I Dont like any witcher part, very bad optimized, very bad controls in combats, in everything, 2nd reason kill game for me, if they make standard rpg controls this game will be more popular then now , alchemy is crap and super boring with so crap controls takes forever to do something, devs dont make same craps like first parts!

Im still pissed off that there was no PS3 release of the Witcher 2, played the first one on the PC awesome game. so yeah there would have to be an awful lack of options for me to give it a chance, yeah I can hold a grudge that bad.

Seriously. Great. News. Just take my money now. CDPR is, and has been, one of THE best dev houses ever. Amazing games, fantastic policies on DRM through GOG, and pushing the envelope in what is considered "mature". Thank God they don't belong to EA.

Looks like I will be giving CD Projekt Red some money in the near future. They do have my respect.

Hope they keep their high quality standards and (if I remember it right) no DLC policy.

I analyzed the picture and came with a small conclusion: The war is still on, Geralt is traveling with another witcher((might be some one else but that person on the white horse has a silver blade and the gloves look similar to an armor piece that Geralt used in the first game)). And plus I can bet my last gold coin that Geralt named his horse * roach*.

'high-end platforms' which basically equates to the 720 and PS4 right?

I've always wanted to play the Witcher games but with me being a PS3 gamer i've missed out on the first two. Hopefully they'll do something similar to Mass Effect and make the first installments available, otherwise I doubt i'll be buying it. Won't have a clue what's going on!

For newbies , The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a perfect title name . Wild Hunt is not a verb here , it doesn't mean going out in open world and hunt wild animals (LOL) . Wild Hunt is noun , it is the name of spectral riders that come from another world and abduct young humans and only few people believe this . Most of the people in The Witcher universe believes it to be myth . Geralt had encountered Wild Hunt many times in the past but it's all mystery for him because of his Amnesia . According to Enhanced Edition of TW 2 (Chapter 3 , Iorveth's path , Cynthia the nilfgaardian sorceress) Geralt was one of the riders of the Wild Hunt . The title Wild Hunt means that everything will be revealed about The Wild Hunt in The Witcher 3 .

sounds good, can't say i have too much problems with the talent tree and the inventory. once i got used to it, it went pretty smoothly. a little thought and preparation before rushing into battle is all that's needed. i do like micro managing and open worlds, don't like the being herded into acts. the w1 was better that way than w2 and longer. getting the best of these two games would make my gaming year of 2014/15. i am prepared to wait for good game!

OMG!!!! ORGASMS!!!! Thought, 20% bigger than skyrim is BIG!!! I have a life, I don't want to spend 200 hours on a game again!!! I just hope they will enhance every aspect of the game... as in more weapons, armors and also choice to build Gerhalt in different class styles... I love playing all RPGs as spellcasters, but in witcher games you can't be a spellcaster only... magic is more of a support to a swordplay...
And I hope they won't allow too much changes at Gerhalt make up screen... this isn't TES or dragon age...

All together, great news... and 2014 isn't that far away...

According to witcher forums the game takes place 8 months after the end of the witcher 2 . Which makes you to think about AA title that CDPR said will be released in 2013 . Could that be expansion that will bridge the gap between TW 2 and TW 3 .? Traveling from Loc Muine to Nilfgaardian border .?

4 millions is excellent for an indie dev, they don't have publisher like EA, Activision, Ubisoft or Zenimax taking away a large sum of their earnings. And they don't do major ads and publicity.

The Witcher's 2 graphics were pretty amazing when it came out, now they want to improve it in the Witcher 3 with even more detail? I'm telling you this game might go into history.

The game's strength is built on its tight progression and storytelling.

I don't want them to make this anything like Skyrim, it doesn't need an open-ended world, "customization" or extra stuffing.

(god, I'm tired of people talking about skyrim, that easy, empty sterile gameworld couldn't be any more overrated)

What it needs is greater length. Witcher 2 would be perfect if it wasn't so short.

The last thing I want them to do is make this game more generic. Just make the game longer. Take the uniqueness & strengths of Witcher 2 and build on them, don't try to "broaden the appeal". I trust them to get this right.

@supershaft777 That's your opinion. And I disagree with you, and I know alot of other people disagree with you when you say empty, sterile game-world. But haven't the option to roam freely to explore and view the beautiful vistas and lore of the area is much more enticing, then being lead from point to point. That's how I felt on the Witcher 2, love the game, story, but sometimes I felt rushed and didn't really get a chance to explore. And this is exciting news for anyone that mods, modding a openworld game just makes the game fresh and more interesting.

Interesting, the Witcher 2 lacked customization and exploration but it's story, visuals and combat were amazing, combine that with what Skyrim does best and you've got a masterpiece imo, (not that skyrim wasn't monumental in its self).

First Dragon Age and now the Witcher taking inspiration from TES, I wonder if these teams can handle such large projects?

@alpha_unit97 CDProjekt definitely can. They're awesome. Bioware ? Not so sure anymore, Dragon Age 2 was a huge drop in quality. But hopefully, with the time they've put into Dragon Age 3, they'll rise up again.
